First up was Ruth Stalker. I was very interested to see whether she had grown in confidence since appearing at the Access To Music event last month.

She has played before, at the now famous open mic night at the Adelphi Club, but not in front of such a packed house. It was her birthday so the whole club sang a rousing rendition of the celebratory song.
I think this moment of togetherness really endeared her to the crowd. Ruth played all original material tonight and although it was only a short set, her vocal dynamics shone. With time and more gigs she will make the less colourful lines sound just as valid as the others to keep her audience captivated.

I don't know whether this is an issue with song lyrics, but I think it should be; scansion, a sense of rhythm, as with poetry a line has to fit, otherwise it kind of sticks out. Ruth handled herself well and has landed a slot at the ever popular Sesh night at The Linnet later this month.
Next came a singer songwriter with soft earthy soothing qualities to his voice. With a very laid-back attitude and warmth that immediately drew you in, Mohammed M Yaseen entertained the fifty or more crowd.

He is obviously a shrewd individual on a night where each artist is very limited for time he chose Dylan's All Along the Watch Tower for his second number.
This wasn't just a cover; he made it very much his own with startling volume changes and shifting time signatures; a very original and individual interpretation.
Danny Holt, who was playing rhythm guitar, accompanied Mohammed creating a fuller textured sound,. A quick change over and the roles were reversed with Danny taking lead to deliver a Rolling Stones classic. Get off my Cloud followed with gusto and the crowd responded singing some of the chorus bits.

A good-looking duo with an interesting mix of styles. I felt there were certain South American, Latino influences mixed in with the popular western songs. Certainly names to look out for.
The beautiful vocalist Rachel from Hull performed her set next, having heard her at the Access To Music gig I knew we were all in for a treat. With a varied set of originals and a cover to appease the masses she delivered once again. A confident awareness of how to use her voice is clearly evident. Choosing uncomplicated guitar phrases that wash over you in gentle lapping waves.

Think Eleanor McEvoy meets Belle and Sebastian for a glass of Chardonnay. Cool, crisp, refreshing and simply delightful. Would love to hear her accompanied by other vocalists and a string section - there are not enough violinists in the world.

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com. Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now. About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 12th March 05 - Soulflame at the White Room By Michelle Dee
Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction. The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance. Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh enthusiasm Read more...
