Saturday 4th June 05 - SideWinder, Mr Mojo, The Vultures, The Cardinals at the New Adelphi
By Julia Grant (2/2)
|
(1/2),
(2/2).
|
|
He was quite a contrast to his fellow band members who appeared more serious and
sedate, which tended to make Kristian stand out even more as being the later addition
to the band's line up.
It was as if they'd decided that winning Raw Talent competitions and such wasn't enough
and that they needed a fresh face to make them stand out that bit more.
When ex-front man Joe, stepped forward to take a turn at singing, it was like the band went from
Boyzone to Ronan Keating gone solo; more mature sounding, yet still rather cheesy.
However, the audience clearly lost interest and began chatting amongst themselves, up
until Kris returned to the stage.
|
Then came a ballad, which admittedly did make me cringe a bit.
At this point it would have been fitting for the band to have had a gaggle of teeny
boppers swaying and swooning away in the front row.
However, all the Adelphi could offer that night was a group of rather lost looking men
as they stood looking confused and unsure how to react to the song.
Previous to this they had been unashamedly dancing away to the more rocky numbers.
I came to the conclusion that if you accept Mr Mojo for what they now appear to be; a
serious yet cheesy rock/pop band with some good catchy tunes, you might just enjoy it.
Don't judge them too quickly or take them too seriously and, although you'll more than
likely be ashamed to admit it, you may just find yourself liking them.
|
|
|
The final band to take to the stage was the evening's headliners, SideWinder.
Although their tunes are very much in the same vein as Mr Mojo, and the two bands
sounding rather similar to each other on CD, SideWinder appear to have a great deal
more credibility than the previous band and come across completely differently live.
Perhaps, this is due to the fact that the lyrics aren't nearly as cheesy, or that they
look a lot more natural and genuine in the type of music they're producing, but whatever
it is, I get the impression it's never going to be frowned upon if you admit to liking this band.
|
In fact, it seems like just about everyone likes SideWinder for their fantastic
collection of feel-good pop songs.
Each and every song in this evening's set is as catchy as hell and has the
potential to get stuck on a loop in your head.
Live, SideWinder are without fault and sound a lot more rockier than on record
which came as a welcome surprise.
|
|
|
There's not really a huge amount you can say about SideWinder which hasn't already been said.
Tonight they were on form and sounded great, but then that could probably be said for
every gig they play.
So, all in all, a good night at The Adelphi courtesy of some fantastic local bands.
|
|
|
For whatever reason, the music managed to keep me grinning throughout the evening and
even though it may have looked like I was crying, I can assure you that would just
have been the cigarette smoke and nothing whatsoever to do with Kris' (Mr Mojo)
uncanny likeness to a Backstreet Boy. Now, off to get myself one of those Vultures CDs...

Music Reviews - Pozition Night Club Rock Night - Wednesday 18th May 05 By Michelle Dee
|
|
After witnessing another fantastic performance by Ernest at the Adelphi last Wednesday I
decided to accept an invitation to the Pozition night club on George Street.
I paid the three pounds entry fee and received in return a little ticket informing
me that I was female; so far so good.
I walked into a large industrial style arena

Music Reviews - Saturday 28th May - The Rakes at Yo-Yo - Jumping For Victory By Andrew Coe 6 Page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|
|
NME favourites The Rakes came to Hull and conquered with their choppy,
wire-like guitar riffs and a front man who can't keep still.
If The Rakes frontman Alan Donohoe were still at school, he'd be
told off repeatedly for fidgeting in class. For the duration of the band's 12-song set
at Yo-Yo at The Welly, Hull on Saturday night

Music Reviews - Saturday 21st May 05 - Under The Influence Presents Mystery Jets at the New Adelphi By Emily

It is not very often you find a band that excites you, I mean really excites you.
Yet it seems that the Mystery Jets might just be the band for the job.
As painfully honest as it is the Hull scene has needed a kick up the ass for some time now.
While still maintaining the stunning talent on show in pubs and clubs all over the city,
a firm kick is needed to rid it of the Indie addiction and mullet pretension.

Music Reviews - Saturday 14th May 05 - Power Metal UK at Ringside - Pitiful Reign, Soulflame, Infobia, Humanity and Deliverance. By Michelle Dee
|
|
I shan't try and compare the acts that performed at the Power Metal UK night with any other well-known bands of similar genre. I have no desire to try and talk authoritatively on a school of music I haven't followed since the early days of Terrorvision and Silverchair.
However, Deliverance the headlining band, from Italy, have definite

Music Reviews - Saturday 1st May - Rock the Vote at The Adelphi By Lucy Kynman
|
|
Last night's amalgamation of Elobo and Funky for Rock the Vote, dedicated to raising funds
and showing the local area's support for the green party and candidate Martin Deane,
was a great success!
Green being the theme for the night, can I just say well done to Alice; when it comes to
creativity and a unique sense for interior design you never fail to hit the mark!

Music Reviews - Saturday 23rd April - Hard-Fi, Boy Kill Boy and Turismo at Sweet n Sour, Silhouette Club By Dick Spring

On arrival at the front of the club I find a queue waiting to get in, so this must be some
measure of the demand for this show tonight (oh, the power of hype) though a top ten
single can't have helped the headline band's cause at all!
It was indeed packed out, it took me twenty minutes to get a drink, which is something
that needs to be addressed by

Music Reviews - Thursday 21st April - Ernest, Rumpus, Scaramanga Six and Fonda 500 at the Adelphi Happy as a Sandman By Michelle Dee

What a fantastic night.
No really, if you weren't there then you missed out on seeing some of the finest
bands the other side of sanity.
The monthly local music magazine, oft slated in its own backyard landed a
winning formula tonight.
Ernest, who everyone should experience, continue to be spine
tingling and achingly beautiful.
Last night they grabbed

Music Reviews -
Midge Ure at Pocklington Arts Centre - Wednesday 13th April 05 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Let me first just say that the Pocklington Arts Centre is a truly fantastic venue, and it's
quite amazing that such a quality venue graces a town that is so small.
Nestling perfectly to one side of the town's charming Market Square, this venue
is a theatre, concert hall and

Music Reviews - 17th March 05 - Ernest Conquer Camden Underworld By Michelle Dee

The ten-seater minibus arrived at around half three and I was ushered inside by
