Music - The 9 year history of Yo-Yo Indie Night.
1995 - 2004 and beyond..........
|
In 1992 DJ Priya approached the then Welly club Hull manager Paul Tognala
and asked him if she could start an Indie music night at his club.
He agreed and Priya launched Giraffe at The Welly club with a batch of fanzine-style hand drawn
flyers and posters.
The first night was a total success and pulled in 300 punters to the areas first indie pop night.
At the same time DJ Priya was DJing at Spiders and working at The Adelphi club in Hull and getting
a chance to see some of her favourite bands for free!
|
|
|
She was also in local band Cake, who at the time attracted major record company interest.
|
|
Due to the success of Giraffe, Priya was offered Thursdays at The Welly
and Jigsaw was born.
After a 2 year spell on Thursdays Paul Tognola offered Priya a Saturday night at the club,
she accepted, left Spiders and Yo-Yo was born. (You see - Jigsaw - Yo-Yo -
All kids toys!
That's how the name Yo-Yo came about).
|
In the meantime a fresh faced Indie kid called Andrew had arrived on the scene back in 92.
He eventually struck up a music based friendship with DJ Priya and it was only a matter of time before
Andrew joined Priya on the decks at Jigsaw and Yo-Yo.
|
The duo then steered their night through the Brit Pop explosion of mid 1995 into super-club status,
success at the time only ever experienced by dance nights.
The night packed out the Welly club till the clubs closure in 98.
|
|
Then the duo took the night to The Silhouette club in Hull saving it from certain closure.
Then back to the re-opened Welly in 2000 when a staggering 1000 (or over) indie fans packed the venue
with a Beatle-mania style of pandemonium.
|
|
As Well as Yo-Yo Hull, Priya and Andrew also set up in 1999 the Loaded indie night at
The Piper club Hull, which still sells out every Friday, making it one of, if not the most successful
Friday club nights in Hull.
The duo then set up Melting Pot every Tuesday in 2001 at the (now closed) Fez club in Hull city centre.
It ran for 2 years attracting crowds of over 1100 people throughout that time.
|
In 2001 the duo were offered a Wednesday night at Po na na, Lincoln.
It was the first outing for the Yo-Yo night outside of Hull.
A lot of students had moved from their Hull campus to Lincoln and showed up along with indie-starved
locals in their droves at the opening night. Yo-Yo Lincoln was born.
In 2002 Yo-Yo moved to the brand new Quayside club every Saturday night and has consistently
sold out every week to this very day.
|
In June 2002 with the Yo-Yo indie night firmly back to its spiritual home the Welly Club on Beverley road Hull. A busy time that also saw the duo DJ at two Oasis after-show parties!
Since then the night has moved from fortnightly Saturdays, alternating with house music giants Deja Vu, to every Saturday in the upstairs of the club with Deja Vu moving into the new Welly Ballroom.
Since returning back to The Welly, Yo-Yo has played host to many live bands such as The Bluetones, Fonda 500, Shed Seven, The Paddingtons, Turismo and Salako to name but a few. Also attracting guest DJ's from the indie scene such as Bez from the Happy Mondays.
|
|
|
Every Saturday is now a guaranteed sell out with new inclusions such as The Live Lab
showcasing the areas finest indie bands.
Also Shed Seven front man Rick Witter has joined the Yo-Yo team as a monthly resident DJ.
Food is now provided every Saturday courtesy of Blunt Foods who also take care of the food at
The Lamp bar on Norfolk Street in the city.
|
Supporting the local scene is top priority for Priya and Andrew, who promote free of charge
independent shops, bars and businesses on all their promotion.
Places like Adelphi club, Pave and Lamp bars, Rockerfeller, Beasleys
and Groovy clothing stores as well as places like Hitchcock's Veggie Restaurant.
The duo also supports Raw Talent radio show which plays local bands across the region on BBC radio.
|
|
|
The Yo-Yo 9th birthday party takes place on Saturday 22nd May at the Welly Club featuring DJ Priya and Andrew on the decks, The Dirty Dreamers will be live onstage at 11pm, plus video projections, full décor, give-aways and a box full of indie classics over the sound system culled from Yo-Yo 's 9 year life span.
|
Advance tickets £5 from Welly, Lamp, Beasley, Rockerfella and Groovy, Hull.
Virgin Megastore, York and Yak Clothing, Lincoln.
Doors open at 10pm - 3am. Price £6 on the door.

Music Reviews - Jet Plane Landing, Harvey Half Devoured and Break Even at The Adelphi Sunday 9th May 04 By Amy Willits.
|
|
One of the last surviving totally independent rock venues, Hull's Adelphi Club saw yet another first-rate rock
night, and I was there to witness the show.
Jet Plane Landing, a distinct, punk rock four-piece were top of the bill with support from the enthused and
highly enjoyable Harvey Half Devoured and Break Even.

Music Reviews - Rides The Bus CD Release Night at Bivouac, Duke Of Wellington, Lincoln with Mad Crowd Disease, Negative IQ, Neon Child - 23rd April 04 By Steve Jones
|
|
Unfortunately I missed the first band, Neon Child, although I heard that they went down well especially as
they are relatively new to playing live.
The second band up was Negative IQ. These boys were starting to build up a following round the Lincoln area
last year before they skedaddled off to Leicester Uni and other

Music Reviews - One Lick Less, Park & Ride, Sidewinder at The New Adelphi Club, Hull Saturday 8th May 04 By Douglas Colvin
|
|
This Saturday night saw Hull's Adelphi club doing what it does best. On stage were three local bands playing different styles of music to a decidedly mixed audience of friends, fans and curious passers by.
On stage first were One Lick Less, three guys playing an unusual brand of Rock 'n' Roll. In an abrupt five song set, they managed to

Saturday Night Was More Than Alright - Sidewinder , Park&Ride, Onelickless at The Adelphi - Saturday 8th May 04 By Paul Monkman
|
|
The Adelphi Club on DeGrey Street has witnessed hundreds and thousands of the city's best bands play
over the years but rarely are three performances of such a high standard as the ones which entertained the crowd
on Saturday night.
Onelickless opened proceedings with half-an-hour of genuine rock and proved to be the perfect warm-up

Music Reviews - Smash it Up! Dead or American, Windum Earl, The Favours, Minions of Jeffrey At the Adelphi, Hull Thursday 6th May 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Well, on the face of it, it looked like a somewhat strange billing, but the bringing together of these different strands
of punk rock, two of which were from Hull, and though widely regarded as indie they contained ample loudness and blariness to qualify for the tag.
Openers Minions of Jeffrey, appeared to have more people on stage than

Music Reviews-
Winnebago Deal, Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt At Full Metal Jacket, The Asylum, Hull Student Union - 30th April 04 By Chris Jarratt
(Full Galleries).
|
|
The night started off with considerable excitement, everyone at college had been buzzing for weeks, and the promo posters had been up at uni and college and handed out in town to mini-moshers et al.
The line up included two local bands; Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt, and a signed band I'd not heard of before.
During the sound checks we
