Music CD Live Band Clubs Reviews
Turismo, Hull Adelphi, 29th September
by Albert Dukes
Being a member of Turismo must make for a busy life; What with running what is easily the best looking and informative website of Hull's bands, giving seemingly endless interviews and press releases to the Hull Daily Mail - they're also the most written about band in the locality, too. Add to that the fact that they've recently lost a guitarist/vocalist and have introduced a fair bit of new material in their live set - there's got to be some extremely tired Turismos out there.
Having seen Tursimo on a few occasions, the main thing that strikes me is how variable their performances can be. I've seen them looking and sounding bright, perky and lively, and I've seen them dull, clunky and worried-sounding.

Before losing a guitarist, Turismo were a quirky indie-sounding band with interesting and unusual songs that were (often) played in a straightforward manner that was often pretty tight and usually lively. If anything, the Turismo of a year or so ago were a slightly punky/folky mix who brought Supergrass to mind.
So, has losing a member made any difference?

Well, it's hard to say - based on what a very busy Adelphi witnessed. As I have said, Turismo are a frustratingly inconsistent band. Especially when you consider the heights they are capable of reaching, musically speaking. The problem seems to be that once there's a couple of mistakes made, their heads go down and they can't seem to lift them up again. At least not during that gig, which gave the unfortunate impression that Turismo have only met once or twice before and had only decided on the set list moments before playing them.
Which leads to the new material. Clearly an inventive bunch (based upon the excellent "Songs To Panic To" demo) the new material sounds a bit like it was designed by a commitee aiming for this week's charts. Where the older songs had a quirky personality stamped all over them, the new material was largely lacking in melody, structure and direction. To me it was a real step backwards. On the other hand - perhaps it was due to simply having a bad gig. Perhaps on a better night, the new material would benefit from a more subtle performance. The new songs also sounded quite heavily in debt to The Coral - but a little bit punkier.
On the plus side, Baggot the front man had plenty of personality and kept trying to bring some life to the performance, but perhaps all the website maintenance, the interviews, the videos and the London gigs have just left them all too knackered to get it together on a consistent basis.

In short - Turismo can do better, but they're going to have to reach a far greater level of consistency before they'll be worrying The Coral and co.

Music Reviews - Pave Perform at the Welly Club
Pave’s performance is polished. Considering the band only formed in March this year, I was staggered to see how much they’d got their act together! Such a tight, professional band. I felt reassured when I took a look at their biographies. That’s when it all fell into place.

Music Reviews - Riley Perform at the Welly Club
I thought it would be hard to report on this. As I watched this band I thought, 'Its going to be impossible to be objective - impossible to stop my personal feelings coming through'. Then I realised that actually that's the whole point - music is all about personal feelings.

Music Reviews - The Fun Loving Criminals
My big night out with "The Cuban drug dealer".
by Diane
What a beautiful warm September evening to travel first class over the Humber bridge to Grimsby to see the wonderful fun loving criminals. As you may have guessed already, I am their Number 1 fan! I also saw them recently at the Hells Angel's Bulldog Bash, where they were superb.

Music Reviews - 22nd August Adelphi - The Schoolgirls & Emma Rugg
The bank holiday weekend at the Adelphi club is kick started by new band, The School girls. Two guys who unfortunately sound like twenty. To quote Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" they're the kind of second rate punk group you'd pay a months wages not to see. Read more...

Music Reviews - Cracktown By Nicholas Boldock
Cracktown - consisting of Silver Fox on vocals/harmonica and King Rat on guitar/vocals - have been together for nearly a year. Time, then, for their first demo CD - and here it is, all 45 minutes of it. No four-song samplers for these boys - no, you get 12 tracks for your money, and not a filler among them.

Music Reviews - Adelphi NightClub
It had been a long day covering Grass Roots Sunday festival in Pearson Park, and after a short kip I was to skip down to the Adelphi Nightclub where I had a couple of beers and took some photos and details of the acts and performers for www.thisisUll.com

Music Reviews
"Homespun" by Homespun
By Kevin Cross
Comprising the talents of Beautiful South guitarist Dave Rotheray and cockney songstress Sam Brown, I came across this new album quite by chance. Bolstered by members of the excellent Hull music scene, including renowned singer/songwriter Matthew Hogg, this album deserves national acclaim as it is, I can say without fear of contradiction, a revelation.

Music Reviews - Superscape
Music Reviews - Superscape By Cilla Hull based band Superscape have been around for more years than the individual members care to remember. With a slightly altered line-up, some comings and goings, and short respite, the band now seem raring to go.
