Music Live Band Clubs Reviews
Smash It Up - The Adelphi, 14th March 2004
By Andy Mawer
First up was HeadUp. No one really knew what to make of them when they stepped up onto the stage with their flowing long hair and obviously metal instruments, as after all it was a punk gig!

But they didn't disappoint , the riffs they ripped out at us were solid yet melodic at the same time. The vocalist was headbanging away and I think everyone enjoyed his short but sweet solos.

No one danced for them but what the heck, they where the first band! Everyone I asked seemed to enjoy the song Brotherhood which I personally think was the best one in their set.
Next the hardcore punk band Die For stepped up, their melodic riffs and vegan morels went down well and plenty of people stood up for them, all moving heads along to the beats.

It was refreshing to see Dom bouncing around close to the crowd and most people where greatly impressed with Laney's drumming , also Mark's bass on one of their later songs was really impressive but not many people picked up on it.
Then up stepped 30 Second Dead. Vampiric in appearance, punk in music! Their opening riff was very gothic and really set the mood for their thrashy-in-places set!

It was good to see Dieter moving while he jammed his bass along, and to hear Morrell's chanting and fresh hardpunk riffs.

Jonny was launching himself around the stage and the crowd, screaming in peoples faces. He even managed to disconnect his microphone during the first song!

The majority of the crowd where singing along with the hey heys' and most people in the room where moving to the beats. Their new song went down a treat and most people there enjoyed their set plentiful.
Last but by far not least were Assert, the uprising UK hardcore rockers really stole the show, carrying the drum kit out to bring in their drum machine, they all looked and acted the part.

The singer was jumping on all the tables and telling people to stand up, get involved. Tattoos literally covering his body, he really looked (and sounded) the part. A good vocalist.

The guitarists where thrashing out some really original thrash riffs and the bass was complimenting this. The drum machine was blasting out some impressive double bass drumming and they had some good morels to match the action going on upstage.
A fair few people danced for them. Despite the full-on, in-yer-face hardcoreness of 'em, just about everyone there loved them. I know I'll be going to see them again!

The banners and strobe lighting they put up really changed the mood in Adelphi and made it seem like a huge arena of sound.

The banners Assert put on the speakers during their set where classics Talk - Action = 0 and People Power. Both in looks and sound, they really set the stage that night.

Music Reviews - U11 304 Showcase at the Welly - 11th March 04 By Cilla
Not being a regular listener to Viking FM I heard about it by chance from one of the bands who were showcasing there. And it seemed like a big event, too - the line-up included Sidewinder, still life, Superscape, Komplikated, Steve Reed - all familiar names to me, plus a couple I'd not heard of before, The Senses, The Caged and Yes Y Not. Music Reviews - Ten Men @ Relax coffee shop 09/03/04
By Elsie Creek
An unusual setting for a gig, you may think. I have never seen a live band in a coffee shop before. But on Wednesday night Relax, on Newland Avenue, stayed open past eleven at night to host an atypical performance from the young Hull-based duo known as Ten Men. In the past couple of months my friends and I have noticed a huge improvement in Ten Men's music. Read more...

Clare Teal at the Shire Hall, Howden, backed by Simon Wallace (piano), Mark Crooks (sax and clarinet), Rob Brown (drums), John Day (Double Bass), Nils Solberg (Guitar) From the minute Clare walked on stage she was in command. I've seen Clare on Parkinson and read interviews and was struck with how natural and self-effacing she seemed. I wasn't disappointed Read more...

Music Reviews - No-Nonsense Nigel's Smash It Up -
The Adelphi, Wednesday 3rd March 2004 By Elsie Creek
Dark, dingy and loud; what better way to spend a midweek evening than at Smash It Up, Nigel Holmes' live punk night. Having not been to a punk gig for a couple of years, I was quite excited about this evening. I've only just started getting into the Adelphi and, although I maintain that it's a total dive, it proved the perfect setting for the sweaty crowd which gathered.. Read more...

Music Reviews - Salako and Misshapen Lodge at the McCarthy Bar, Hull Student Union 1st March By Starpaw
More often than not, I turn up to see a band and before the headliners even play a single note I'm happy to just get off and go home. I saw Athlete at the Adelphi last year and Fonda 500 played first. After Fonda, Athlete sounded like the musical equivalent of having a nice cup of rosy lea with your grandma on a Sunday morning. Music Reviews - Uberdruck at Substance - Welly Club - Friday 13th February 04 By Mike Mawe
Firstly I must say what an amazing atmosphere was created by the 350+ strong crowd at the Welly club that night. It was a wet and rainy night before Valentines day and I got the impression the guys from Basespin were expecting a poor turn out and with problems flying in Uberdruck from Germany, things started to Read more...
