Music CD Live Band Clubs Reviews
Sidewinder Saturday 27th September, Silhouette Club.
by Albert Dukes
My hopes for a night of quality entertainment at the now well established TUBE night were pretty low, to be honest with you. Having witnessed some truly boring performances, coupled with dreadful sound problems at Sils, I only turned up because I couldn't face a night of bangin' tunes spun by an ex-Take That dancer at t'Welly.

As usual, the sound was poor and needs sorting out if Sils is going to continue putting live entertainment on. But the band was a different matter.

I've heard absolutely nothing about Sidewinder. I couldn't tell you a thing about them, due to them being either new to the scene (which I don't believe, given the crowd was at least three times larger than for any other band I've seen at Sils) or they don't know how to promote themselves.

This is a real shame because they were easily the most listenable of any of the local bands I've seen in the past year or so. They're hardly fashionable sounding, being neither punky nor shouty. But it's simply the quality of the songs and the arrangements that draw you in and challenge you not to fall in love with them. There's gang mentality, and they're tight as a gnat's chuff.

Where many local bands are poor copies of national trends, Sidewinder don't fit neatly to a single comparison, unlike say, The Paddingtons, who clearly want to BE the Libertines (sort it out lads, it's like a tribute) and Turismo, who want to be The Coral, Favours, who want to be the Yeah, Yeah Yeahs (admittedly with a bass player). Sidewinder sound like everything and nothing. My notes say The Stone Roses, The Beatles, Country & Western, Psychedelia, Early Floyd and The Who.

For what it's worth, there was energy to spare, and they obviously know how to play, without being musos (three minute pop classics all the way home). A most refreshing change!

So, they might be a bit sixties, yeah, but I, along with a good three hundred pop fans, loved the tunes, dug the vibe and got on down and cut some rug like it was the first summer of love all over again.

Music Reviews - Pave Perform at the Welly Club
Pave’s performance is polished. Considering the band only formed in March this year, I was staggered to see how much they’d got their act together! Such a tight, professional band. I felt reassured when I took a look at their biographies. That’s when it all fell into place.

Music Reviews - Riley Perform at the Welly Club
I thought it would be hard to report on this. As I watched this band I thought, 'Its going to be impossible to be objective - impossible to stop my personal feelings coming through'. Then I realised that actually that's the whole point - music is all about personal feelings.

Music Reviews - The Fun Loving Criminals
My big night out with "The Cuban drug dealer".
by Diane
What a beautiful warm September evening to travel first class over the Humber bridge to Grimsby to see the wonderful fun loving criminals. As you may have guessed already, I am their Number 1 fan! I also saw them recently at the Hells Angel's Bulldog Bash, where they were superb.

Music Reviews - 22nd August Adelphi - The Schoolgirls & Emma Rugg
The bank holiday weekend at the Adelphi club is kick started by new band, The School girls. Two guys who unfortunately sound like twenty. To quote Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" they're the kind of second rate punk group you'd pay a months wages not to see. Read more...

Music Reviews - Cracktown By Nicholas Boldock
Cracktown - consisting of Silver Fox on vocals/harmonica and King Rat on guitar/vocals - have been together for nearly a year. Time, then, for their first demo CD - and here it is, all 45 minutes of it. No four-song samplers for these boys - no, you get 12 tracks for your money, and not a filler among them.

Music Reviews - Adelphi NightClub
It had been a long day covering Grass Roots Sunday festival in Pearson Park, and after a short kip I was to skip down to the Adelphi Nightclub where I had a couple of beers and took some photos and details of the acts and performers for www.thisisUll.com

Music Reviews
"Homespun" by Homespun
By Kevin Cross
Comprising the talents of Beautiful South guitarist Dave Rotheray and cockney songstress Sam Brown, I came across this new album quite by chance. Bolstered by members of the excellent Hull music scene, including renowned singer/songwriter Matthew Hogg, this album deserves national acclaim as it is, I can say without fear of contradiction, a revelation.
