Music Live Band Nightclubs Reviews
Off The Wall at City Hall, Hull
Friday 1st October 04
By Shirley Gardner

At Hull City Hall on Friday 1st October, Off The Wall played 2 hours worth of top notch music, which left the audience thoroughly entertained and wanting more!

Pink Floyd were one of the most influential and innovative bands of the last 40 years, some people would say that they still are, and I will not be one to argue with them!
If you were fortunate enough to see Pink Floyd at one of their gigs, then you will know that the performance is one in a million. If you were not so fortunate, like me, and since they haven't any plans to do a show again, then you have to rely upon the tribute bands and Off The Wall are the only tribute band, endorsed by Dave Gilmour.
I was never really a big fan of Pink Floyd, though I did have an appreciation for their music from hearing it as I grew up, thanks to my big brother! But now thanks to my partner playing me the CD's and taking me to the concert on Friday, OTW have now made me want to hear more and so I may end up becoming a fan!
OTW started with a song dedicated to former member Syd Barrett, Shine On You Crazy Diamond. This was a good song to begin with as it demonstrated to the audience the extent of talent involved in OTW!
People of all ages attended, ranging from children to Floyd veterans, showing just how good the music is to have such a broad appeal. Visually the concert certainly stood out from anything I have ever seen before, the backdrop was almost as entertaining as the music itself, and accompanied the enormous lighting system nicely!
A song that really stood out for me was the epic Great Gig in The Sky. Stella Fairhead produced a blinding rendition matching the LP version key for key with apparent ease, hitting notes that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, I was very impressed!
With the 2 hours drawing to a close, we were very privileged to receive a double encore of Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb, which like the rest of the concert were superbly performed.

OTW are a must see band, and if you are a Pink Floyd fan of any kind and of any age, even if you've seen the real Pink Floyd and think you'll be disappointed, I recommend that you still check them out, you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Music Reviews - Har Mar Superstar at Asylum - 30th September By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers
Above the stage in Asylum tonight hangs a giant g-string. It's not the remnant of some bizarre student ritual; it's the calling card of Har Mar Superstar. He's marked his territory. Tonight, this venue and all the beautiful people who show up to dance to his insane party grooves will be his. Har Mar bounds onto Read more...

Music Reviews - Morphines, Amber Souls, Fado Rock and Superscape 23rd September 2004 at Thee Box, Asylum By Cilla
Mo and I were happy to go back to the Asylum. It's been several months since our last visit and even though our names weren't on the guest list as we'd expected, Cheryl and her co-door lady (whose name I have forgotten - sorry and thanks!) let us in. Cheers to you both for that! It looked like we were early Read more...

Music Reviews - Ernest and Ottogono at the Adelphi - 24th September By Michelle Dee
This was an eagerly anticipated gig by many. Having been fortunate enough to hear the lyrically superior E.P. Pimps B**ches and Superheroes a few weeks previous I too was looking forward to hearing the ever -popular Ernest. This must-have disc was ably reviewed on here by Read more...

Music Reviews - Biffy Clyro and This Girl at Asylum 24th September 2004 By Steve Rudd, Photos by Darren Rogers
If only I knew that the gigs at Asylum start earlier than most gigs. The Asylum, for those that don't know, is all swanky part and glorious parcel of the Hull University Campus (off Cottingham Road) - and, of-late, the venue has been welcoming a whole host of incredible talent. The gigs there tend to start just Read more...

Music Reviews - Biffy Clyro At Asylum - 24th September By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers
The cult of Biffy Clyro swirl, pulse and swell like a spring tide while their heroes rock mercilessly infront of them. On record, Biffy Clyro are a band whose songs range from the heart wrenchingly emotional to the jaw droppingly powerful. But I'm totally unprepared for the sheer intensity of the Biffy Clyro live experience. Read more...

Music Reviews - 30th August 2004 - Anarchy in Jaz Bar
By Kelly Bolder
It seems at the moment Hull's collection of successful young bands cannot help but impress. The line up tonight included 3 Hull bands and 2 other Northern stars. On a bank holiday Monday in Hull you could be forgiven for thinking that the places to be were Beverley Road and the Waterfront but you would be Read more...

Music Reviews -The Spark, BBC at The Piper, Tom Jackman, Thief, Le Shed, Turismo 21st Sept 04 By Andy Dykes
When I arrive at The Piper tonight, I'm greeted by my friend Charlotte. She's here as a photographer, but has also been roped into being compere for the evening. Apparently, preparations for tonight's show aren't running smoothly. Absent sound guys and faulty monitors aside, there are cameras everywhere. Read more...

Music Reviews - Fraction of the Cost, Displacements, Cracktown, Jenny Bromley Unite Against Fascism Sunday 19th September - Ringside by Daniel Laney
I've always admired the second floor function room at the Ringside bar. It looks and feels like a cheesy, but not tacky cabaret bar from Blackpool. If you were to glance at the stage you could imagine various acts leaping out at you from behind the curtains and annoying the hell out of you for half an hour whilst you Read more...

Music Reviews - Unite Against Fascism - Fraction of the Cost - The Ringside Sunday 19th September - By Andy Dykes
Tonight I expect The Ringside to be dimly lit and packed to the rafters with members of the Zapatistas, Rage Against the Machine and the Cuban government, all talking earnestly and with hushed voices. Possibly the A-Team too. I expect an air of urgency, a feeling that we're all taking part in some Read more...

Music Reviews - The Favours, Dirty Dreamers, Sweet Assassin at The Welly Club on 16th Sept 04 By Andy Dykes
Tonight's openers Sweet Assassin get proceedings underway with an apology. Their bassist hasn't turned up and so they welcome onto the stage Paul, a real, bona fide session musician. The band open with a punchy little number called 'Touch Me I'm Sick'. It's a solid effort, although the action onstage Read more...

Music Reviews - Clever Brains Fryin', Young Heart Attack, The Bonnits, at The Welly Club 26th Aug 04 By Richard Stead
I kept telling myself; nah, no way is Keith Flint at Welly Club. I knew he loved the small venues he plays with The Prodigy but I never thought he would ever play in such a small place like The Welly. Well that was all put to one side when first bounced on MC Sir Real and MC Bad Manner shouting; Read more...

Music Reviews - Morrissey and The Dead 60's on Monday 6th September at Bridlington Spa By Steve Rudd.
Photos By Darren Rogers
What can I say, other than what an amazing night! Support band The Dead 60's, who took on the mighty stage at 8pm sharp for their half-hour set, were so brilliant that I'd almost forgotten that Morrissey was still to come after them. The Dead 60's are a young quintet impeccably Read more...
