Yo-Yo LiveLab with Salako
Saturday 3rd April 2004. 10pm - 3am

Salako are among the cream of the crop in the Hull live music scene. Now a four piece once again, Salako have confirmed that they are set to release a new album, The Story Of Our Life So Far in April 2004 on the Tablature label.

They have also scheduled some live dates and radio sessions to support the release. One be at The Yo-Yo indie nights LiveLab on the 3rd of April 2004 at The Welly club Hull (on stage at 11pm).

Yo-Yo has hosted 2 sell out Live nights this year with Fonda 500 and The Paddingtons taking to the stage.
The first Salako album, Re-inventing punctuation was released in August 1998. It was recorded in a bedroom in the spring of that year, after the band signed to Jeepster Recordings, home of Belle and Sebastian and Snow Patrol.

They gained praise for their idiosyncratic live shows, which delighted and confused the public in equal measures due to their innovative use of sleeping bags, Jaffa Cakes and drum solo's. Musicality was the title of the second album, which was released in June 1999.
They then started recording their third album. This time in a studio with Michael Brennan, who has worked with Super Furry Animals and Elastica, throughout late 2000 and 2001.

Over the next couple of years the band finished the record with the help of Tim Wills, a producer who trained with Trevor Horn, and has worked with Ian Brown. The album will now be released in April 2004 on Tablature recordings.
For this new album, called The Story Of Our Life So Far, Salako have again changed their live sound. The band have added a more raw and electric edge to their performances, which they plan to play throughout Britain and Europe in 2004.

Music Reviews - Inner Terrestrials, Die For, Flatline (with Greg) Adelphi, Hull 21st March 2004 By Dick Spring
Well, indeed, what an eventful evening! With Mark (Flatline's singer) unavailable due to work commitment, it was left up to Greg, from Freaks Union to join his friends for an impromptu run through a couple of songs. On the face of it, this seemed like a bit of fun, though it would appear that certain people saw it differently Read more...

Music Reviews-The Ordinary Boys,Mower,The Applewhites, The Hideaways at Adelphi, Hull 10 March By Dick Spring
Well this is the second Under the Influence night I've experienced and it has left me impressed. It would appear there is another visionary Promoter in the city (alongside Nigel, of the legendary Smash it Up Punk Nights) that quite frankly leaves all the other rank amateurs standing. Speaking to Dean Shakespeare (for that is he) it was clear that here is a Read more...

Music Reviews - A Night at the Asylum -
Hull Uni - 9th March 04 By Michelle Dee
The Asylum beckoned for three excited girls on a cold Tuesday night. They were not mad, just crazy about Cracktown who were playing that night at the newly refurbished Asylum venue at Hull University. Coming out of the Old Grey Mare we spotted our heroes, King Rat and The Silver Fox striding down Cottingham Road. Overjoyed to be in the Read more...

Music Reviews - The Vultures, Blue Sand & Superscape at the Adelphi - Saturday 20th March 04 By Cilla
This was one of those under-advertised gigs which do slip through the net sometimes, but which was really worth seeing. Really good atmosphere, friendly crowd and great music. I knew Superscape were playing and after watching them last week at the Welly, then hearing them do a stunning set on BBC Radio's Raw Talent, I really wanted to see them play again. I knew I wouldn't be Read more...

Music Reviews - Smash It Up - The Adelphi,
14th March 2004 By Andy Mawer
First up was HeadUp. No one really knew what to make of them when they stepped up onto the stage with their flowing long hair and obviously metal instruments, as after all it was a punk gig! But they didn't disappoint , the riffs they ripped out at us were solid yet melodic at the same time. The vocalist was headbanging away and I think everyone enjoyed his short but Read more...

Music Reviews - U11 304 Showcase at the Welly - 11th March 04 By Cilla
Not being a regular listener to Viking FM I heard about it by chance from one of the bands who were showcasing there. And it seemed like a big event, too - the line-up included Sidewinder, still life, Superscape, Komplikated, Steve Reed - all familiar names to me, plus a couple I'd not heard of before, The Senses, The Caged and Yes Y Not. Music Reviews - Ten Men @ Relax coffee shop 09/03/04
By Elsie Creek
An unusual setting for a gig, you may think. I have never seen a live band in a coffee shop before. But on Wednesday night Relax, on Newland Avenue, stayed open past eleven at night to host an atypical performance from the young Hull-based duo known as Ten Men. In the past couple of months my friends and I have noticed a huge improvement in Ten Men's music. Read more...

Clare Teal at the Shire Hall, Howden, backed by Simon Wallace (piano), Mark Crooks (sax and clarinet), Rob Brown (drums), John Day (Double Bass), Nils Solberg (Guitar) From the minute Clare walked on stage she was in command. I've seen Clare on Parkinson and read interviews and was struck with how natural and self-effacing she seemed. I wasn't disappointed Read more...

Music Reviews - No-Nonsense Nigel's Smash It Up -
The Adelphi, Wednesday 3rd March 2004 By Elsie Creek
Dark, dingy and loud; what better way to spend a midweek evening than at Smash It Up, Nigel Holmes' live punk night. Having not been to a punk gig for a couple of years, I was quite excited about this evening. I've only just started getting into the Adelphi and, although I maintain that it's a total dive, it proved the perfect setting for the sweaty crowd which gathered.. Read more...

Music Reviews - Salako and Misshapen Lodge at the McCarthy Bar, Hull Student Union 1st March By Starpaw
More often than not, I turn up to see a band and before the headliners even play a single note I'm happy to just get off and go home. I saw Athlete at the Adelphi last year and Fonda 500 played first. After Fonda, Athlete sounded like the musical equivalent of having a nice cup of rosy lea with your grandma on a Sunday morning. Music Band News - This is Your New Home - Superscape
(3 track single) By Steve Rudd
Yet another of the seemingly never-ending line of genuinely brilliant bands emanating from the grand city of Hull, tucked to the East of the mighty proud county of Yorkshire, Superscape are a quintet with much to offer anybody who's sick and tired of rock bands who are obsessed with supporting the more hardcore and Emo slants..
