Music Live Band Reviews
Blue Sand at The Sesh - Linnet & Lark - 1st April 04
By Rich Porter

The Sesh is held at The Linnet & Lark, down Princes Ave every Thursday night.

Having never been to one of these nights I wasn't sure what to expect, probably just another live band night?

Far from it, as the first thing to greet you as you walk through the door is the resident DJ who blasts out great music and nearly all of it from local bands.
As Freddy Flintoff skittled out the Windies on the big screen, tunes by The Landau's, The Paddingtons, The Applewhites and Pave belted out across the pub.
The Linnet is a big pub and can accommodate a lot of people, but tonight was a bit sparse (so I was told. I didn't think it was too bad).

This was probably due to the fact that Hull indie favourites, Fonda 500, were gracing the New Adelphi tonight.
That wasn't going to put off indie pop/rock upstarts Blue Sand leaving a Withernsea woz 'ere mark on a Hull venue.

Their New Adelphi gig supporting Superscape had made the band some new friends in the Hull area and they wanted to make many more.
The band entered all in black and went straight into new song Spectre, a Blink 182 type tune which gets the audience attention straight away.

Blue Sand have a self released cd out at the moment and 4 tracks from it are played tonight, title track Changed Names and Slaves, You and Heaven, Kenny Other and Raw Talent favourite, Bleed Myself.
Lead singer Gary belted out his vocals and made full use of the expansive stage area on his guitar breaks.

Al stands and sways as he lets his guitar fill the room with the melodies that make this band's tunes stick in your head.

Ellie smoulders over her bass, whilst Rob keeps the drums rolling while trying to grab time to light up a cig in the breaks.
This is a young band who have confidence in all their material and so they should.

Take Bleed Myself and its extreme teen angst chorus I bleed myself just to get your help starts a crowd sing along.

They save the very best till last.

Second Hand Trousers is the rockiest song yet with Gary pleading We All Need Sympathy, Don't We! over searing guitar noise.
That is followed by End of The World, Al's guitar sings out an unforgettable hook nearly all the way through the song only stopping for Gary to softly sing So, this is what becomes of every thing we work for.

The end of the world before it starts up again to a final crescendo.
Blue Sand are slowly working their way into the Hull music scene and word is starting to spread. It's thanks to venues like The Linnet holding nights like The Sesh that give these bands a chance to show what they are capable off. It's up to us to get out there and support them.

Great band. Great Night.
Next Gig: Ringside Pub, 147 Beverley Road, Hull.

Music Reviews- Flatline, Die-For,The 30 Second Dead, Twice A Riot, The White Room, 28th March By Dick Spring
Unfortunately The Defected were on stupidly early and I missed them but I did arrive in time to catch Twice a Riot, featuring Harry's great new hair! I have to say that this band do this screamo metal/ hardcore crossover pretty well and is certainly a giant leap forward from singer (screamer) Harry and bassist Arthur's previous musical outings. Music Reviews-The Obsession, Psychedelic Breakfast, The Landau's - Under the Influence At the Adelphi, Hull
Saturday 27th March 04 by Cilla
There was an air of expectancy this evening. The Landau’s, about to release their debut single were playing, their appearance backed by an enthusiastic and supportive following of fans and family. This made for a really good atmosphere. And it turned out to be a night and a half. Read more...

Music Reviews - Inner Terrestrials, Die For, Flatline (with Greg) Adelphi, Hull 21st March 2004 By Dick Spring
Well, indeed, what an eventful evening! With Mark (Flatline's singer) unavailable due to work commitment, it was left up to Greg, from Freaks Union to join his friends for an impromptu run through a couple of songs. On the face of it, this seemed like a bit of fun, though it would appear that certain people saw it differently Read more...

Music Reviews-The Ordinary Boys,Mower,The Applewhites, The Hideaways at Adelphi, Hull 10 March By Dick Spring
Well this is the second Under the Influence night I've experienced and it has left me impressed. It would appear there is another visionary Promoter in the city (alongside Nigel, of the legendary Smash it Up Punk Nights) that quite frankly leaves all the other rank amateurs standing. Speaking to Dean Shakespeare (for that is he) it was clear that here is a Read more...

Music Reviews - A Night at the Asylum -
Hull Uni - 9th March 04 By Michelle Dee
The Asylum beckoned for three excited girls on a cold Tuesday night. They were not mad, just crazy about Cracktown who were playing that night at the newly refurbished Asylum venue at Hull University. Coming out of the Old Grey Mare we spotted our heroes, King Rat and The Silver Fox striding down Cottingham Road. Overjoyed to be in the Read more...

Music Reviews - The Vultures, Blue Sand & Superscape at the Adelphi - Saturday 20th March 04 By Cilla
This was one of those under-advertised gigs which do slip through the net sometimes, but which was really worth seeing. Really good atmosphere, friendly crowd and great music. I knew Superscape were playing and after watching them last week at the Welly, then hearing them do a stunning set on BBC Radio's Raw Talent, I really wanted to see them play again. I knew I wouldn't be Read more...

Music Reviews - Smash It Up - The Adelphi,
14th March 2004 By Andy Mawer
First up was HeadUp. No one really knew what to make of them when they stepped up onto the stage with their flowing long hair and obviously metal instruments, as after all it was a punk gig! But they didn't disappoint , the riffs they ripped out at us were solid yet melodic at the same time. The vocalist was headbanging away and I think everyone enjoyed his short but Read more...
