Music Live Reviews
Pave Perform at the Welly Club
by Cilla
I was lucky enough to see Pave play at the Grassroots Festival in Pearson Park a couple of months ago. But that was when the sun was shining (nobody needed more than a vest and a pair of shorts to be comfortably dressed) and anyway, I love live music outdoors.

Maybe this time I wouldn’t recognise them or remember their sound - fog and dark evenings can numb you!

It was Scott (the guy who does a sterling job in ‘looking after’ the band and no, I don’t mean he’s a heavy!) who emailed me to say that the band were playing at the Welly Late Night Spot (on 25th Sept 2003) alongside Riley and The Edible 5ft Smiths and would I like to come along (keep an eye out for the review).

So now was time for the test. Were they really as good as I’d remembered or was it just one of those hazy, rose-tinted summer memories?

I needn’t have worried. I had heard them before. There they were, still bursting with enthusiasm and belting out their music.

They seem to have quite a following already. They want to be taken seriously and are determined to get somewhere.

Pave’s performance is polished. Considering the band only formed in March this year, I was staggered to see how much they’d got their act together! Such a tight, professional band. I felt reassured when I took a look at their biographies. That’s when it all fell into place. Despite their youth (all between 17 and 20), they’re pretty accomplished musicians already.

From jamming with ‘The Troggs’ (even before my time!) to playing this year at Glastonbury, these lads have loads of experience before they even started!

Tom the lead singer and songwriter certainly knows how to sing. He makes you want to hear all the words. He can emulate Robbie Williams and Bryan Adams both at the same time! He oozes confidence and has that relationship with the microphone which attracts a certain amount of attention from the girls!

They did have a competition to see who could produce a pair of underpants on stage - I didn’t see the result of that. Must remember to ask next time I see them.

Talk about audience-friendly, their rapport with the punters is easy and good natured.

I wish I could describe their ‘brand’ of music. The truth is, there is so much in there trying to get out, I don’t think that they should be attached to any particular genre at all. That’s what makes them interesting to me, at least. These guys are undoubtedly talented – every one of them. And they’re young. And they can go in any direction they choose. The world is their oyster. I will watch them with genuine interest to see which way they go.

You should make up your own mind. Go and see them. Pave’s schedule of gigs leading up to Christmas (see the gig guide below) is a pretty heavy one. Loads of chances!

Music Reviews - The Fun Loving Criminals
My big night out with "The Cuban drug dealer".
by Diane
What a beautiful warm September evening to travel first class over the Humber bridge to Grimsby to see the wonderful fun loving criminals. As you may have guessed already, I am their Number 1 fan! I also saw them recently at the Hells Angel's Bulldog Bash, where they were superb.

Music Reviews - 22nd August Adelphi - The Schoolgirls & Emma Rugg
The bank holiday weekend at the Adelphi club is kick started by new band, The School girls. Two guys who unfortunately sound like twenty. To quote Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" they're the kind of second rate punk group you'd pay a months wages not to see. Read more...

Music Reviews - Cracktown By Nicholas Boldock
Cracktown - consisting of Silver Fox on vocals/harmonica and King Rat on guitar/vocals - have been together for nearly a year. Time, then, for their first demo CD - and here it is, all 45 minutes of it. No four-song samplers for these boys - no, you get 12 tracks for your money, and not a filler among them.

Music Reviews - Adelphi NightClub

Music Reviews
"Homespun" by Homespun
By Kevin Cross
Comprising the talents of Beautiful South guitarist Dave Rotheray and cockney songstress Sam Brown, I came across this new album quite by chance. Bolstered by members of the excellent Hull music scene, including renowned singer/songwriter Matthew Hogg, this album deserves national acclaim as it is, I can say without fear of contradiction, a revelation.

Music Reviews - Superscape
Music Reviews - Superscape By Cilla Hull based band Superscape have been around for more years than the individual members care to remember. With a slightly altered line-up, some comings and goings, and short respite, the band now seem raring to go.
