Music CD Live Band Clubs Reviews Bookmark and Share
Pave Perform at the Linnet and Lark 23 October 2003
by Nick Quantrill
Pave were the latest band to perform on the Thursday evening session in the Linnet and Lark and showed what an exciting development they are in the local music scene. It has been far too many years since a band in the city have actually looked determined to demand that people take notice of them.

Many of Hulls finest bands have nurtured the attitude that being great in front of their mates at The Adelphi along with a handful of London pay to play 'showcases' is sufficient (yeah, of course A&R men hang out nightly in The Athletes Foot, Shoreditch..)

Pave are different, you can almost touch it. From the regular gigging schedule, the busking in Hull city centre, to the handing out of flyers and the promotion of their website, Pave don't appear to be shy of hard work.

This attitude is what sets them apart from the usual local band mentality. Pave aren't waiting for things to be handed to them.

Despite the obvious limitations in sound quality, The Linnet and Lark is to be applauded for its efforts in establishing a regular live music evening showcasing local bands.

Music venues in the city that open their door to non-cover bands are in short supply and anyone with an interest in live music really should make the effort to support such evenings.

If the size of the audience for this gig is a regular occurrence then a few more pubs should be looking at supporting Hull's live music scene as the turnout and interest in the band on stage was certainly impressive.

Musically, it is difficult to report their style. That's not to say their music is ground-breakingly original, because it isn't. Pave seemingly takes their influences from a variety of artists but succeed by not falling into the trap of sounding like a bland copy of other bands.

Maybe if you take an acoustic rock based sound, a dash of Beatlesesque harmony and a hint of the visual impact of The Clash on stage you might be getting close.

Pave Perform at the Linnet and Lark 23 October 2003 continued

Whether or not Pave become the next band to break out of Hull remains to be seen.

Generally, after a year or so on the local circuit, a band is likely to lose that initial mystique and become for many just another Hull band.

Not many bands have the stomach for the fight against this apathy after the initial period of interest.

Pave are equipped to break the cycle, go see for your self.

Music Reviews - The Fun Loving Criminals
My big night out with "The Cuban drug dealer".
by Diane
What a beautiful warm September evening to travel first class over the Humber bridge to Grimsby to see the wonderful fun loving criminals. As you may have guessed already, I am their Number 1 fan! I also saw them recently at the Hells Angel's Bulldog Bash, where they were superb.

Music Reviews - 22nd August Adelphi - The Schoolgirls & Emma Rugg
The bank holiday weekend at the Adelphi club is kick started by new band, The School girls. Two guys who unfortunately sound like twenty. To quote Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" they're the kind of second rate punk group you'd pay a months wages not to see. Read more...

Music Reviews - Cracktown By Nicholas Boldock
Cracktown - consisting of Silver Fox on vocals/harmonica and King Rat on guitar/vocals - have been together for nearly a year. Time, then, for their first demo CD - and here it is, all 45 minutes of it. No four-song samplers for these boys - no, you get 12 tracks for your money, and not a filler among them.

Music Reviews - Adelphi NightClub
It had been a long day covering Grass Roots Sunday festival in Pearson Park, and after a short kip I was to skip down to the Adelphi Nightclub where I had a couple of beers and took some photos and details of the acts and performers for www.thisisUll.com

Music Reviews
"Homespun" by Homespun
By Kevin Cross
Comprising the talents of Beautiful South guitarist Dave Rotheray and cockney songstress Sam Brown, I came across this new album quite by chance. Bolstered by members of the excellent Hull music scene, including renowned singer/songwriter Matthew Hogg, this album deserves national acclaim as it is, I can say without fear of contradiction, a revelation.

Music Reviews - Superscape
Music Reviews - Superscape By Cilla Hull based band Superscape have been around for more years than the individual members care to remember. With a slightly altered line-up, some comings and goings, and short respite, the band now seem raring to go.
