Saturday Night Was More Than Alright - Sidewinder , Park&Ride, Onelickless at The Adelphi - Saturday 8th May 04
By Paul Monkman
|
The Adelphi Club on DeGrey Street has witnessed hundreds and thousands of the city's best bands play
over the years but rarely are three performances of such a high standard as the ones which entertained the crowd
on Saturday night.
Onelickless opened proceedings with half-an-hour of genuine rock and proved to be the perfect warm-up
for what was to follow.
|
|
|
Fronted by an exceptionally well-dressed lead singer, the gig-opener's deeper side of music can certainly appeal
to all kinds of music lovers - the Adelphi-dwelling crowd being one. Surely a band going places.
Second up were Park&Ride, a band who last played with headliners Sidewinder in one of the opening heats of the
Best Original Band competition at Springhead Pub, which they coincidently won.
|
Park&Ride's tempo was as refreshing as always, cementing their reputation as one of the city's more feel-good
performers.
With a gig at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool awaiting at the end of the month, Saturday night was the perfect
warm-up for the band to flex their originality muscles, which they did with Bugsy Malone's We can be whatever we
want to be, which certainly didn't disappoint.
|
|
|
Leeds and Sheffield have also enjoyed, now Liverpool are in for a treat.
After those two excellent performances, it was time for the headliners. Sidewinder are rapidly
becoming one of Hull's finest properties as their feet-tapping flow of music is failing to find any detractors,
and Saturday night was no exception.
|
With a crowd of the usual Park&Ride groupies and a fair proportion of the general public, all music tastes were
catered for in Sidewinder 's repertoire, and only the hard of hearing would have failed to be impressed.
Just another Saturday night at Adelphi it might have been for the bands in question, but such a trio of
performances are the exact reason why Hull's music scene is becoming a force to be reckoned with once again.

Music Reviews - Smash it Up! Dead or American, Windum Earl, The Favours, Minions of Jeffrey At the Adelphi, Hull Thursday 6th May 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Well, on the face of it, it looked like a somewhat strange billing, but the bringing together of these different strands
of punk rock, two of which were from Hull, and though widely regarded as indie they contained ample loudness and blariness to qualify for the tag.
Openers Minions of Jeffrey, appeared to have more people on stage than

Music Reviews - The Freddy James Band at The Tap and Spile, Spring Bank 3rd Sunday of every month By Elsie Creek
|
|
The Freddy James Band is traditional, old-school live blues playing at its finest. They like to consider their music as a variation on an old theme, changing rhythms and riffs to add interest to what is essentially a very simple format.
You can see the restraint it takes the Tap's patrons not to get up

Music Reviews - The Displacements at the Polar Bear By Steve Rudd
|
|
Three bands were on for what was the Polar Bear's first ever Melodic Punk/Grunge/Ska type night.
A fairly large crowd saw all girl band Black Orchid, Green Ginger and headliners Displacements all contributing to an extremely successful night.
So successful that the organiser said that despite it

Friday 30th April saw Asylum's monthly rock night, Full Metal Jacket, ending its most successful year in style.
As well as the usual musical mayhem that can be found on the night, as a special treat the organisers laid on three bands.
First up were Brassik Lynt. Due to the early stage time Asylum was still

I must admit I've been looking forward to this gig for ages.
The chance to see 3 up and coming metal bands in one night was gonna provide some serious relief from exam stress and if it didn't the alcohol is cheap enough to fill any void.
However, anyone would went would know that this was a night to remember.
First up were

Music Reviews - 4Ft Fingers / Tiny Elvis / Flatline / Displacements The Adelphi, Wed 21st April By Dick Spring
|
|
Having seen countless posters around, and, with a very eager, expectant, and sizeable queue, for this Smash it Up show
featuring one of the big hitters of the current UK punk scene 4 Ft Fingers.
Opening act Displacements, made an excellent job of getting proceedings into gear.
They appeared to have a large fan base there to support them with

Electric Eel Shock & Antiproduct at The Kazbah, Scarborough 25th March 04 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Antiproduct is the coolest and most exhilarating punk band since The Sex Pistols.
Stopping at nothing to put on the most entertaining show possible at every gig they play, this wacky quintet might be based in London, but they make it known loud-and-clear that they prefer

Music Reviews - Adelphi, Hull, 18th April
Jaws drop in Hull and appreciation for local bands rise.

Crowbar Smile, DUMPVALVE, Mad Crowd Disease, Multiple Injuries, Planet 10
It's cold, it's wet and it's miserable. Now there are two things I could do on this gloomy Sunday afternoon in April.
Number one; I could stay at home in a lovely quiet village, pondering how I've become so overdrawn and kick myself when I figure out the reason.
Or,

Multiple Injuries at The Ringside, Hull - Wednesday 14th April 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
This venue is a new addition to the Hull circuit, and I was informed that the booking is in the very capable hands of Determination Inc (who were the driving force behind, the late, lamented, Moriarty's ) and are bringing the magic touch to this venue, with a newly installed 2k PA system.
The new Wednesday night
