Adelphi, Hull, 18th April Continued
April Powers - Jaws drop in Hull and appreciation for local bands rise.
Crowbar Smile, DUMPVALVE
Support: Mad Crowd Disease Multiple Injuries Planet 10
By Mike Rofone
Page 2/2 First Page.

|
The day's biggest surprise comes in the shape of three male teenagers with an average age of sixteen. Mad Crowd Disease may not be in any way metal but their catchy melodic speed punk is certainly refreshing and brings the sunshine out on this gloomy afternoon.
In between songs the portly bass player interacts with the crowd making them feel welcome and although he talks with what sounds like a want-to-be American accent, you can't help but love this group.
|
|
With a style that bares resemblance to Pennywise and Anti-Flag the group can also pull off a powerful ska sound that makes you realise
what Capdown were up to ten years ago. Keep your eye out for Mad Crowd Disease they have the potential to go far!
|
DUMPVALVE'S singer may be hobbling around in pain this evening but their set is neither splintered nor weak.
In fact today DUMPVALVE deliver probably their best performance I have seen to date.
With drumming that is just as tight and as fast as the riffs, you begin to realize that DUMPVALVE are probably the most brutal band to ever have come out of Hull and let us not forget about the vocals.
When he sings, the lead singer makes you hold your breath and you feel if this man pushes his vocals any more he may explode.
|
|
|
The great thing about DUMPVALVE is you feel the ego may never land which is encouraging.
Modest and passionate you can't help wonder why the hell hasn't this band been snapped up by a record label yet?
Great songwriters as well as musicians, you hope that this band with their original sound will go far.
Today's headliners have arrived late due to an impressive distance they have traveled to be here with us this afternoon.
|
What's even more impressive is that anyone who was lucky enough to be at the gig this afternoon, they have just been held witness to one of the world's heaviest groups.
Watching the drummer's hand spasm and the lead singer quivering like Ian Curtis from Joy Division, Crowbar Smile definitely deliver an awesome set.
What's more the fact they can do it with seemingly little effort makes them even more entertaining.
|
|
|
With an original dirty sound and being unbelievably tight Crowbar Smile can make even the biggest fans of heavy music feel uncomfortable.
It was a shame that the Adelphi wasn't bustling this afternoon for three pounds you certainly got your moneys worth and not once did you feel disappointed.

This made for a really good atmosphere. And it turned out to be a night and a half.

Inner Terrestrials, Die For, Flatline (with Greg) Adelphi, Hull 21st March 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Well, indeed, what an eventful evening! With Mark (Flatline's singer) unavailable due to work commitment, it was left up to Greg, from Freaks Union to join his friends for an impromptu run through a couple of songs.
On the face of it, this seemed like a bit of fun, though it would appear that certain people saw it differently

Music Reviews-The Ordinary Boys,Mower,The Applewhites, The Hideaways at Adelphi, Hull 10 March
By Dick Spring

Well this is the second Under the Influence night I've experienced and it has left me impressed.
It would appear there is another visionary Promoter in the city (alongside Nigel, of the legendary Smash it Up Punk Nights) that quite frankly leaves all the other rank amateurs standing.
Speaking to Dean Shakespeare (for that is he) it was clear that here is a

Music Reviews - A Night at the Asylum - Hull Uni - 9th March 04
By Michelle Dee

The Asylum beckoned for three excited girls on a cold Tuesday night. They were not mad, just crazy about Cracktown who were playing that night at the newly refurbished Asylum venue at Hull University.
Coming out of the Old Grey Mare we spotted our heroes, King Rat and The Silver Fox striding down Cottingham Road.
Overjoyed to be in the

Music Reviews - The Vultures, Blue Sand & Superscape at the Adelphi - Saturday 20th March 04 By Cilla

This was one of those under-advertised gigs which do slip through the net sometimes, but which was really worth seeing.
Really good atmosphere, friendly crowd and great music.
I knew Superscape were playing and after watching them last week at the Welly, then hearing them do a stunning set on BBC Radio's Raw Talent, I really wanted to see them play again.
I knew I wouldn't be

Music Reviews - Smash It Up - The Adelphi, 14th March 2004 By Andy Mawer
|
|
First up was HeadUp. No one really knew what to make of them when they stepped up onto the stage with their flowing long hair and obviously metal instruments, as after all it was a punk gig!
But they didn't disappoint , the riffs they ripped out at us were solid yet melodic at the same time. The vocalist was headbanging away
and I think everyone enjoyed his short but

Music Reviews - U11 304 Showcase at the Welly - 11th March 04 By Cilla

Not being a regular listener to Viking FM I heard about it by chance from one of the bands who were showcasing there.
And it seemed like a big event, too - the line-up included Sidewinder, still life, Superscape, Komplikated, Steve Reed - all familiar names to me, plus a couple I'd not heard of before, The Senses, The Caged and Yes Y Not.
