Thirteen Senses at the Welly

As if that wasn't enough the other one came in called Stefan and proclaimed that the
Tuesday Club would become the best band in the world: you heard it hear first folks.
Then threw the torn off turn up of his jeans, which had the aforementioned globe
conquerors name inked on it, across the chocolate laden table.
Mr. Dick Meredith P.I. manager for Thirteen Senses, explained that they had to cancel
the Haribo confectionary because it was inducing sugar highs; highs that resulted
in ludicrous behaviour such as removing refrigerators from their rightful owners at
One Big Weekend in Birmingham this year... I digress, ahh yes the Tuesday Club and
their bizarre antics.
|
|
Adam the drummer, if memory serves, caught the ring of tattered denim with ease and
promised to treasure it always. We wish the Tuesday Club all the luck, in the world
and can I just thank them for making the interview just that little bit more memorable.
|
The whole feel of this gig was very different from others I have been to at the Welly.
I sensed the music in terms of colour and emotion.
There was a real openness and warmth that spread from the stage through to the bright eyed
Thursday night crowd.
As sublime, aquamarine chords rang out during Lead us, purple sounds echoed hopefully around the walls.
Top notes float effortlessly to the inner ear and you connect to the magic that is
Thirteen Senses.
My only complaint would be, that I was so taken by the heavenly euphoric atmosphere;
I didn't really grasp any of the lyrical content.
|
|
|
Vocal responsibility however, was shared between Tom and Will, Tom providing a darker
edgier tone, whilst Will sang with an impassioned vulnerability.
|
|
Instrument changes were cleverly worked out to deliver an incredibly smooth free-flowing set.
Towards the end of their set they incorporated a duet into the show called Perfect and it was.
With Tom using an ebo: he later explained to me this was a small hand held battery operated
device that vibrates, the notes coming from his guitar took on orchestral proportions.
This song, due to its simplicity with just the two of them on stage, would normally
feel out of place in a club setting, but somehow they made it work.
|
|
The crowd's favourite was Into the fire judging by the number of times they called out for it.
My own favourite has to be History (or Mystery - I missed the title), it seemed to last
forever which is incidentally the title of another one of the tracks you get when you
buy The Invitation, available at HMV and all other good purveyors of fine music.
A band like this would sound really good playing in the late afternoon sunshine at any of
the big festivals and if the successes of this year are anything to go by they probably will be.
|
Before the last track Will encouraged the front of the crowd to touch the keyboard which a
number did; as if by touching the instrument they would some how feel closer to the music.
The finale reminded me of a school piano being played in an echo filled music room.
The vocal being whispered close to breaking moved the whole crowd and left us all
bathed in glorious Technicolor sound.
Thirteen Senses release their new single called Thru The Glass on 17th January 2005.

Music Reviews - The Sunnyside Of The Day By Nicholas Boldock
|
|
First things first: I've had a really shit day. Having been in negotiations with a certain Hull-based
company regarding possible employment, today it all went tits up as they pulled the plug and informed
me that, after three meetings with various luminaries from the firm, my services would not be required

Music Reviews - Park and Ride, Blue Sand and David Devant and his Spirit Wife, SweetNSour 7th Oct By Michelle Dee

Arriving at 9pm the Welly looked bleak and unpromising.
A few people stood between the cold metal railings used to slow down the club-goers
in their desire to get inside.
Mo, my photographer for the night, and I dutifully joined what was the makings of a queue.
With a rail on either side we were not unlike lambs or pigs

On a warm autumnal evening we made our way across town to experience what was to
be a very enthralling night of ska and skulduggery. MrZ from
Edinburgh and The Splitters from Leicester were showcasing their
talent at the ska bar, an up and coming night at the Ringside,
Beverley Road.

Music Reviews - Har Mar Superstar at Asylum - 30th September By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers

Above the stage in Asylum tonight hangs a giant g-string.
It's not the remnant of some bizarre student ritual; it's the calling card of Har Mar Superstar.
He's marked his territory.
Tonight, this venue and all the beautiful people who show up to dance to his
insane party grooves will be his.
Har Mar bounds onto

Mo and I were happy to go back to the Asylum. It's been several months since our last visit and
even though our names weren't on the guest list as we'd expected, Cheryl and her co-door lady
(whose name I have forgotten - sorry and thanks!) let us in. Cheers to you both for that!
It looked like we were early

Music Reviews - Ernest and Ottogono at the Adelphi - 24th September By Michelle Dee

This was an eagerly anticipated gig by many.
Having been fortunate enough to hear the lyrically superior E.P. Pimps B**ches and Superheroes
a few weeks previous I too was looking forward to hearing the ever -popular Ernest.
This must-have disc was ably reviewed on here by
