The Applewhites were up next they have had considerable success lately playing to good
crowds at the Sweet n Sour night at the Welly.
They are an odd looking band; the lead-singer, diminutive in stature, stick thin but
with a huge voice; the lead guitarist topping six foot; the drummer stripped to the waist
and the bass player unassuming and somewhat out of the limelight.
They open with a catchy number, Dirty Rockn'Roll which sounds like Motorhead
screwing the Strokes; there's a disturbing image..
|
|
The band's usual following are strangely absent tonight and the Applewhites play to an empty dance floor.
Big James on drums keeps everything tight and fast in fact tempo appears to be the name of the game.
Sally Greenteeth starts of slow then gathers pace as Tom screams down the mike then inexplicably slows down.
I felt I heard definite Nirvana influences during Telling Lies, the fast tempo, vocal
structure and relentless strumming made this a stand out track.
|
|
|
You think you're cool is aired next; an absolute powerhouse of a song but with a final
flourish tagged on at the end played at breakneck-speed, that didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the song.
|
|
Displaying a penchant for snappy guitar intervals and screechy vocals licked with slick chords,
there are shades of an altogether different animal, harking back to the dirty days of early rock.
If the idea was to play hard and fast and all stay together, then these guys would take first class honours.
The only downside to them was that there didn't seem to be enough to set each song apart.
|
So on to the third act possibly one of the hardest working bands around at the moment fresh from
nailing the Adelphi on Saturday and Asylum the week before Blue Sand took to the stage and
delivered a short set featuring mostly new songs.
They are building up a selection of strong numbers and moving away from the lighter feel on
the Changed Names E.P.
I have often been accused of being sycophantic about this group but no other band touches me in
the same way as they do..
|
|
|
I try to take in the lyrics more tonight; I began to hear the heartfelt words that
Gaz sings as he bares his soul.
They open with their newest single Chlorine Eyes which starts gritty and deep then moves into
more familiar territory with a stinging chorus.
At the start of Love To Hate You Alan's vocal was a bit quiet but normal service was resumed
as the track, penned by the others whilst Gaz was away, picks up pace and threatens to raise the roof.
Once you know this one you can't help yelling for all your worth to the choruses and the bits in between.
|
|
It must be good for Gaz to know he has Alan to take the lead to break up the performance,
especially since he does a bloody good job of it.
|
It was then I really noticed the small TV screens dotted about the club.
During It's Ruining Everything, I experienced a strange feeling; watching them on the small
screen was like the reverse of seeing a famous person in the flesh.
I can't quite put my finger on it.
The only song from their first E.P. that gets on to the set list is Bleed Myself.
I miss Let it Rain, having only heard it live once or twice, I live in hope that it
will put in an appearance and wash away my worry that it has gone for good.
|
|
|
To my disappointment, and I'm sure to Blue Sand's too, the dance floor remained
empty so I decided to give them one overjoyed soul to direct their energy towards.
I chose End of the world to dance to and was thanked by Gaz for my ungainly efforts.
