As I mentioned before, the noise in the venue was reaching fever pitch as
tonight's headliners Ernest took to the stage.
The excitement was tangible as the unearthly distorted notes echoed from the keyboard.
Then with great self-assurance they put on an awesome show.
They have a sound not unlike the Midlands outfit Riley who I heard on the grapevine have split.
Say it ain't so. With veritable ease, racy blues numbers sit side by side with more
Indie sounds of songs like Applecore which features a hand drum intro.
|
The highlight of their blistering set was without a doubt the epic in two parts.
With the keyboard switched to Dr Who homage. Guitars firmly in the world of raunch and reverb.
Terry, the easy going laid back front man delivers single notes against a wall of wailing guitars.
Then with an infectious tone he announces part two of this rolling epic.
|
|
|
A waterfall of sound jangles and crystallizes somewhere in the minds eye.
A sharp contrast to part one, with frenzied staccato chords ripping the plaster from the walls.
|
|
The four members of Ernest gave their all for this one. It rocks verily.
Following this musical marathon a song about the pitfalls of marriage to which some
of the less inhibited members of the fifty plus crowd come to the front and dance.
With sensuous slow beats and the alcohol addled cavorting on the floor, Ernest won
the hearts of the shiny-faced revellers.
A flick of a switch (last orders) a flip of the mind and a final visit to the bar; you can go up a
dress size waiting to get served on really busy nights.
|
Surely that would be down?!! I dread to think what you were doing..
Erm yeah up, down something moved.
This song is about Leeds festival and Cannabis..something moved for me!
Probably your knicker elastic.
What makes you think I'm wearing any? This is seriously trippy.
'Tis trippy go with it..
It's all too beautiful.
Just like you baby blue.
Baby you know its true.
That sounds like a song lyric, is this part of the review?
|
|
As Ernest took over our fragile minds we lost all sense of reality.
Rhyme and reason flew out the open window onto vast peaks and steep troughs metaphysically speaking.
And as we were deafened by rapturous applause and shouts and chants that would be more
associated with the football terraces the energized and awesome display came to a climactic end.
|
|
|
For all you who turned up to see Lyca Sleep apparently, and this is gospel from the horses mouth so to speak,
By the time we were organized the flyers were already done.
But really we are completely organized peoples some of the time.
An unquestionable defence if ever I heard one, with a level of honesty rarely witnessed on the Hull music scene.

Blind Frog Ernie, Le Shed, Shindigg, Killer of Saints, Displacements at the Piper Club Tuesday 7th September 2004 By Andy Dykes
|
|
I walk through the door of The Piper tonight, straight into a wall of sound
created by three guys who look and sound like a very early Blink 182.
This band is Displacements.
It's hard to figure out exactly what's going on until they introduce a little subtlety.
And then it all starts to sound pretty good.
Vocally, neither singer

Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 19th August - 5678's, 59 Violets and The Morphines By Andy Dykes
|
|
I've heard tonight's openers The Morphines described as something like Ian Curtis singing
with The Clash.
If my musical arithmetic is correct, then The Morphines should sound something like Sham 69.
And they do. A bit.
While the garage rock revival grips the world like nuclear war, The Morphines hark back to an era

Whilst stuck at traffic lights in Witham ( Hull ) I heard a wonderful sound. No, not Dale Winton
announcing my lottery numbers but something almost as good. Rock music in Hull !!!.
I pinched myself and it hurt. I then saw a poster on the old pub on

Music Reviews - HarriWatts Band Comin' Out Party At The Lamp Wednesday 4th August By Jane Foster
|
|
This is the first time I've really seen the Harri Watts band properly.
I did in theory see them at the Lamp once before, at the Cracktown Christmas Carol last year.
But that was after several flagons of fine ale and much good cheer, with a bit of
rubber chicken abuse thrown in.
A perfect night in my book,

Music Reviews - Sons of the Desert at the Nagshead Friday 30th July By Jane Foster
|
|
Sons of the Desert are a 9-piece soul covers band who have been dishing
out their fine meaty goods to the people of 'ull for roundabout a decade..give or take
a few changes in their line-up over the years.
Last time I saw them was last Christmas at the selfsame pub, and I thought they were
rather grand then, so I

Jaz Bar 10th August 2004 The Ludes, The Mardous, 59 Violets, The Applewhites By Andy Dykes
|
|
The classy setting of the Old Town's Jaz Bar plays unlikely host to a range of bands tonight. The wooden floors and high concrete ceilings make Jaz Bar an unusual choice for this evening's entertainment. Combined with an absence of carpets, cushions on chairs and curtains on windows and I get the feeling that there are going to be a

Music Reviews - CrackTown, Purple Organ & Blue Sand at The Adelphi Saturday 24th July By Michelle Dee
|
|
I am lucky to count King Rat and the Silver Fox as friends, so you can imagine my surprise and
delight when upon entering the Adelphi on a rainy summer night, I heard the familiar
sound of Foxy's harmonica emanating from within.
I had no idea they were on tonight's eclectic line up.
