Music Reviews - Pat McCarthy - Jazz Guitar By Lyn Acton

Pat McCarthy plays the kind of jazz guitar that I like. I've seen him a number of times, now and I have also had the good fortune to sing with him. He plays in a sensitive yet stylish understanding way which makes him a good accompanist and a pleasure to listen to on solo's. A good all-rounder then, so I guess these reviews may be biased.

Pat was playing a Pave - Café Bar - Hull with Rick Woolgar - tenor saxophone, on a fairly busy Sunday afternoon. This gig can be a difficult one. I play there regularly and some of the audience cn be indifferent and noisy and sometimes it can feel like you're competing with the drinkers and all the hard surfaces!

But as I sat in the corner, having a Sunday Roast, Pat and Rick played some lovely Jazz Sstandards. Taking it in turn to sos and each showing great respect for each other. It was like watching two old friends having a good time. No chat, just good music. Some of the favourites were Summertime, Girl From Ipanema, Thought About You and many more.

Good Fellowship 4th February 2004

Pat played a very different gig the week before at Hull Jazz at the Good Fellowship Inn - Cottingham Road, Hull. At this gig he was fronting a quartet which had the much talented Jamie Sheriff on piano, Gary Jackson on double bass and my favourite drummer, John Perry (he played on my last CD and he's fantastic!).

The audience at Hull Jazz are the direct opposite of a Pave audience. The silence can be just as oppressive as the noise at Pave. But they listen out of respect for those performing and the Pat McCarthy quartet really deserves it. Pat interacts with the audience with a very easy going manner. He is warm and funny. In his introduction of Gentle Rain which featured Jamie Sheriff, Pat likened him to Jazz Masters, Bobby Crush and Mrs. Mills! So you see, not all Jazzers are up their own musical bottoms!

Pat played that night mostly as an accompanist as Jamie played some cracking piano And Gary Jackson made some fantastic facial expressions whilst Mr. Perry kept everything ticking along beautifully. Personally speaking, the ideal medium to see and play jazz would be a cross between Pave and Hull Jazz, where people can relax and can hear the music they've come to see.

As you might have gleaned, I'm quite a fan of Pat and when I spoke to him at Pave he told me that he3 was halfway through laying a new kitchen floor - so hey, Pat, hope you've finished it now and hope to see you soon. And for everyone else - if you find a gig that has Pat playing and you like jazz guitar, go and see him, you'll have a good time. Honest.

Music Reviews - Full Metal Jacket - The Asylum Night Club - Hull Uni - Tuesday Feb 17th By Sue Watson
