Sunday 28th November 2004 - The New Adelphi Club, Hull
By Lucy Kynman
|
A four course set menu for the night of eclectic musical treats to appeal to the most
diverse of palettes.
Sgt. Buzfuz - This acoustic performer opened and closed the night with
two short sets. Described as London's main connection to anti-folk,
Sgt. Buzfuz overlaid simple classical guitar melodies with original,
humorous and controversial lyrics.
|
|
|
Santa's Buggerboyz - Five-piece, loud and rockin' band, Santa's Buggerboyz began their
set with an introductory bang of the head on the microphone from front man and local
restaurateur, Bruce Hitchcock (Hitchcock's Vegetarian Restaurant).
They then continued to enlighten us of their obscure view point of the world
through Captain Beafheart sounding highly eloquent lyrics on top of QOTSA sounding bass lines.
|
Thomas Truax (the one that I'd been waiting for...) - Having seen
Thomas Truax previously this was definitely the most anticipated
performance (for me) of the evening, especially when I discovered he had brought
along a creation I had not seen before, The Back-Beater.
The Back-Beater; a circular shaped instrument with attached springs and wires, which
reacted to body movement as well as pre-programmed rhythms, alongside Sister Spinster;
a contraption that seems to have more to do with bicycles than creating music
and The Hornicator; an old Victrola gramophone horn with various eccentric
additions, made up Thomas' collection of inventions.
|
|
|
The show demonstrated a clever and entertaining array of uses for everyday
objects to extract sounds from traditional instruments in unconventional manners.
The crowd was enthralled and at one point involved in the proceedings,
when Thomas went on a walk about the club encouraging audience members
to sing into the Hornicator and incorporating their input into the piece.
|
Chris T-T - The headliner for the night, acoustic guitar performer Chris T-T engaged the
audience from the start and entertained us with his deadpan delivery of comic
one-liners and sad, humorous and political numbers.
The lyrics were both imaginative and clever, picking up on scenarios that would
appeal to a wide ranging audience, for example who wouldn't enjoy hearing
about their least favourite popstar being mauled in some horrific way?
Overall an excellent evening's entertainment, which appeared to be enjoyed by the whole audience.
I would definitely recommend seeing them all the next time they feature on
the bill (and no I don't mean the TV programme!)

Pocklington Arts Centre is a beautifully intimate all seated venue.
It's the perfect venue for tonight's gig. With high sound quality and acoustics, it's no
wonder so many acts speak well of this little known venue. Tonight saw one of America's finest
singer-songwriters, Josh Rouse, take to its stage

an almost sold-out venue in the small town of Pocklington on that one night of the
week when most people prefer

Former Icicle Works frontman, Liverpudlian genius Ian McNabb has long been setting
mid-sized venues

The Landaus arrived in the dressing room to be greeted by
