Thursday 26th May The Bonnitts @ the Sesh Linnet and Lark

The Linnet and Lark on Princes Ave always seems to come into those back in the day conversations amongst my friends and its great to see that its made a major comeback as an original music venue in the city.

This evening, The Sesh, masterminded by DJ and Promoter Mark, plays host to The Bonnitts who are currently building a solid reputation for themselves around the city.
An added incentive in the form of BBC filming has been offered to potential punters and the atmosphere is good as we arrive just after 8.30.

After a few beers, an acoustic act is announced as Bobby Joyce. Standing on the bar foot-railings to see, the support is a solo performer who's decided to open with a Beatles cover.
This strikes me initially as disappointing because there are a growing number of original acoustic artists around the town but, to be fair, the cover is very good and I am impressed that the next song is an original composition.

The set continues by combining covers with original material evidently pleasing the growing crowd. It's a confident and well-rehearsed performance involving some catchy original material and a naturally powerful voice.
The tactic of weaving covers into his set encourages the crowd to offer a friendly ovation when the set comes to a close.

The Sesh is a great place to learn about what's going down in the Hull area in terms of music, as local original demo's get played throughout the night.

So after enjoying listening to some first rate local talent, it's time for The Bonnitts to take to the stage.
It's good to see a bit of surging from the crowd as a punchy instrumental is the first offering of the set.

It's one of those efforts that I am expecting just to explode into a raucous stomp but remains controlled, building crowd anticipation all the time.

The Bonnitts looked relaxed as they burst into song number two. A good old musical assault on the senses is served up, a driven sound-scape which lifts the crowd inducing mass head bobbing and some subconscious pouting.
As the set continues, it is clear that the city needs acts like this who are breaking up the midweek punter apathy and perpetuating a convincing argument that gig's like this, atmospheres like this, should never be missed.

Throughout the set, the crowd remains positively vocal, spurring the band on in both confidence and performance. The quality of musicianship is high, and the songs seem to have all the right parts in the right place.
The drumming is a highlight for me tonight as it's really galvanising the performance with a tightness that keeps the crowd stomping.
When the set comes to a close, the crowd really responds and although there are calls for more, the set is just the right length to have people wanting a little more.

I left The Linnet having experienced something. Without sounding pretentious, there is a sort of underground feel to The Sesh.

It probably lies in an excellent choice of band's and a DJ that isn't afraid to fuse local talent with proper alternative music.

It's really, really worth a visit!

Music Reviews - Mark Joseph, The 59 Violets, Blue Sand, Pave - Hull Adelphi, May 28th 2004 By Nick Quantrill
It's undeniable that the Under The Influence nights have been a massive success at drawing new acts to the city. Dean really deserves credit for getting the bands of the moment into The Adelphi. Hull needs these kinds of gigs. I also suspect Dean is a canny promoter. Having the support bills filled by the better bands in the city means Read more...

Music Reviews - Skankt Support: Catch-it Kebabs Ska Bar, The Ringside, Beverley Road, Hull.Friday 28th May By Daniel Laney
The Ringside may have played host to a small crowd tonight, but the performance and well being that floated through the air this evening was definitely on a large scale. I was full of cold and feeling sorry for myself, my two friends cough and snot decided they wanted to join me this evening and my god did they keep pestering me. Read more...

Music Reviews - Rhetorical Retro The Landau's The Ringside, Beverley Road, Hull 26th May 04 By Daniel Laney
I have never been a person that judges style over substance but tonight as soon as I saw the Rod Stewart look yet again in full swing and the clothes from Dads wardrobe I cringed. Another venue I was a virgin of until last night was Beverley Road's newest rock venue, The Ringside. This strange venue with its easy going décor Read more...

Music Reviews - PACKED TO THE RAFTERS The Adelphi, De Grey Street, Hull. Homespun Support: John & Wayne By Daniel Laney
Local Heroes & Northern Trio's, tonight's audience get the chance to take a step back and be reflective on their lives. The weather this evening is definitely playing for the cold and cloudy team, but the local fans are willing to queue further and further down the street just to get the chance to see one of Hull's local heroes return with his Read more...

Music Reviews - For Those Of You About to Goz, We Salute You! Punk Day, The White Room Sun 23rd May By Daniel Laney
If there was a gig I would be there and if there was a pit to be smashing things up in you could guarantee I would be doing my bit to help destroy anything I could get my hands on. After a couple of years at university and experiencing a few of lifes other little chores, today was the day to come back and see how much the scene has changed. Read more...

Music Reviews - Flatline, The City Ghost's, Displacements, Green Ginger and Bundy at Springfield on the Common, Hull - Thursday 20th May 2004 By Dick Spring
Damn good job the team rolled up 15 mins early, as there was a late addition to the bill in the form of Bundy, who were into their stride as we entered. There were an impressive number of people at this unusual but very good venue. It had the look of what the Adelphi ought to have, though it was sadly Read more...
