Twice the riot, Die for, Flatline, Tear Jerk and Steel Rules Die At the New Adelphi Club, 27th June 2004 By John Pearman

I wasn't planning on going to the Adelphi tonight.
You see, I don't really like punk music and it's quite a well known fact amongst my friends.
So why the hell did they turn up at my door and ask me to come? I have no idea.
But upon contradictory insight into the bill as to whether Freak's Union was to play or not,
I decided that the night might be worth a gander.
|
|
|
Before I get stuck in, let me explain myself a little for why I openly admit to 'not like punk'.
I don't say this out of any negative resentment or wish to provoke inter-genre feuds as it is
a characteristic of hull that I am proud of which seems to allow the punks to get on with
metal heads, the metal heads to get on with punks, the indie kids to get on with ravers and.. so on.
|
This is something that Freak's Union's Jimbo reports is not apparent in other cities around
the country (Hull's music scene is maturing an awesome potential that only a select few seem
to recognise). I only mention this genre preference (or lack of) out of consideration for
the audience and the subjects and bands that I am going to talking about.
I am concerned that I am not as capable as others to do these bands justice with the usual
multitude of favourable comparisons.. for I am, so to say, ignorant of punk music.

Flatline. These guys were setting up as I came in. I've seen these guys before a few times.
The last time I had this pleasure was at the white room.
The lead singer's feeble attempt at drinking a yard of ale will for ever stain his name in my eyes.
Their performance was not up to the bar they set at the white room in terms of enthusiasm.
|
|
It seemed to me that they had a hard day, were tired and maybe needed a yard of ale each.
However, the adelphi's favourable sound quality really pronounced the ferocious guitar parts
that I really didn't get to appreciate in the lesser acoustic conditions of the white room.
They were fast, raunchy and melodic and being spewed out in favourable quantities for each song.
|
|
Something that I realised while watching these guys is comparable to the cliché modern proverb
often used at seemingly pointless motivational team building sessions held in work place:
your team is only as fast as your slowest member. In tonight's context: your stage presence
is only as good as your most unenthusiastic player. I will leave it that. Flatline left me
wanting more, as I eagerly await the line up in which they are included with both enthusiasm and mix intact.

Million Dead, The Freaks Union and Silence In The Streets At the Welly - 27th April 04 By Dom (plus Gallery)
|
|
Tonight's show was put on and promoted by the WellyClub. They really surpassed themselves promoting this show, I can't remember ever being at a show as full as
this in Hull.
There were well over 300 people attending and due to the size of the venue it was the perfect amount. I haven't been into the big room since it's been

Music Reviews - Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. By Brian
|
|
The bottom line; Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band.
They don't claim to be anything else. Don't want to be anything else.
Off stage, Cal, Danny and Gaz are pleasant enough young men, on stage however, they seem to transform, Hyde-like, into aggressive noise merchants, peddling their own brand of punk.

Music Reviews- The Levellers, The Mutts & 59 Violets at Hull City Hall - 29th March 04 By Steve Rudd
|
|
The Levellers have to be applauded for consistently inviting some brilliant bands to support them on tour.
Back in December 2003, Brighton rockabilly outfit She Said did the honours brilliantly, and this time around - for their 14-date, Anti-Apathy UK Spring 2004 tour

Million Dead, X is Loaded, yourcodenameis:milo at Fibbers By Steve Rudd
|

As the April rains raged outside, so did Newcastle quintet yourcodenameis:milo on the inside.
Strange name, you might think.. and they're an even stranger band, proudly presenting the sound of sheer carnage as three guitarists manhandle all manner of destructive and

Brave, Blind Frog Ernie, Silence In The Streets, Dumpvalve The Welly - Tue 20th April KERRANG Show! By Felix Green
|
|
Downstairs in the main ballroom of the Welly Club is always a difficult room to fill, since it is far larger in comparison to the other rock venues in Hull.
Yet with four weeks of Kerrang promotion and some wide spread flyering it was as full as I've ever seen it.
Also, praises to the sound guys who

Music Reviews - The Displacements By Steve
|
|
Displacements are a remarkable new band based in Hull.
Chris (Gowie), Simon (Burner) and Nick are only just turned 18 yet their unique brand of music is rapidly attracting a loyal following.
Remarkable because guitarists and vocalists Simon and Nick are self taught through spending hours in front of a PC logged on to the web whilst Gowie has been playing
