27th October - CrackTown, Wooden Ghost and Attila the Stockbroker at The Adelphi
By Jason Karlson
|
We used to pose for the Grattan's catalogue, and sometimes Kay's if money was really tight,
declares Silver Fox as they strike another of their notorious and hilarious catalogue poses.
Tonight we're treated to the Space Hopper and Mr Frosty's Slush making machine.
Yes, its time once again, cats and kittens (to steal a phrase), for the Adelphi's Anti-folk night.
First up are CrackTown with their own brand of political harmonica-driven blues, King Rat
strumming away on his acoustic guitar while top hat sporting Foxy veers across the stage
with his harmonica in hand.
|
|
|
CrackTown are as crazy as they are clever, somewhere between insanity and brilliance you'll find
them and their clever set of songs like Prisoner 783, a witty satire on the dumbing down of
society with lyrics like Prisoner 783, escaped from Waterstones without the latest
John Grisham thriller (it's something like that, apologies to King and Silver for badly
misquoting but Snake Bite does funny things to my memory at that time of night) or
everyone's live favourite the comic Charlton Heston which builds up to both of them uttering
his famous statue of liberty line from The Planet of the Apes.
|
|
Unfortunately, whenever I've seen the CrackTown guys play here there never seems to be much of
a crowd. Maybe the Adelphi crowd are intimidated by constantly being beaten at a round of catalogue poses.
|
Wooden Ghost are bitterly disappointing. Especially considering that they've come all the way from
New York to perform tonight.
Their songs are all very forgettable, there was very little banter between them and the crowd
and they're just not very exciting apart from when the lead singer almost electrocutes himself
on the microphone, twice.
With the Adelphi just celebrating its 20th year, it's good to see one of its regulars
performing here tonight, Brighton's sharp tongued street Poet Attila the Stockbroker.
|
|
|
Opening his set with a tip of his hat to music legends, Jacko (who it turns out had buggered off
upstairs) and John Peel who was one of the first people to play Attila's unique brand of
poetry on a record.
His music is a strange mix of punk poetry, MC-ing and anti folk.
He has something to say on every subject from his sarcastic tune Russians in the DHSS and the
subject on everybody's lips, them over there.
I prefer Kerry and I'm sorry if that's not controversial or left enough for you.
|
|
His set bristles sarcastic intelligence as he blurts out his views on life and the
phenomenon of people being famous for nothing Hey Celebrity TV whore, what the hell do I need you for?
Couldn't have put it better.

Music Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie, Blue Sand the Applewhites and Displacements at Piper November23rd By Michelle Dee Photos by Darren Rogers

The Piper club on Newland Avenue has, according to many people, always had something of a volatile reputation.
On more than one occasion I have heard reports from people that you always get fights and
fracas at the venue.
Indeed the last time I went to the Piper there was a very

Pocklington Arts Centre is a beautifully intimate all seated venue.
It's the perfect venue for tonight's gig. With high sound quality and acoustics, it's no
wonder so many acts speak well of this little known venue. Tonight saw one of America's finest
