Music Live Band Nightclubs Reviews
Champion Sound at the Welly - Friday 9th April 04
By Ed Hunter

A THOUSAND rude boys gyrated to the pulsating Jamaican rhythms and the batty shaking was in full effek..

..Well, no they didn't actually. And no it wasn't. Champion Sound at Welly Club on Friday night was quiet.

The dance floor seemed a bit dead which is a shame for a weekend.

Dancehall has a great groove and this night should take off. It just hasn't yet.
It didn't help that the students were home for Easter. FUN and vibrancy seemed to have been replaced by a cynical, chemical atmosphere.
People in hoods lurked in shadows.

OK, it's not quite Dawn of the Dead. But where IS the party in Hull? No seriously.

I genuinely don't know. I suspect its followed the teenagers and moved to the metal nights.

But....back to the night in question......Downstairs at the Welly, the big room played the usual relentless hard house.
The small room played some nice funky dance. But it IS a small room.
It's a purely personal opinion, but to me, the bottom seems to have fallen out of dance music.

It seemed to stop evolving about 5 years ago, which is why something fresh like a dancehall night is such a good idea. If only it could take off.
On a different note, is there anywhere you can go just to have a bit of a laugh?

You know, listen to stuff that mixes styles. And not heavy, break-neck stuff.

I'm talking about melodies and singing I suppose.
Maybe I'm getting old but I kind of want a night where the DJ cooks up some Baby Jane by Rod Stewart, followed by cheesy slice of Euro-pop like Alice Deejay, a sprinkle of Zep, a sprig of Highway to Hell.

Seasoned with a dash of Rubber Soul, a couple of Trojans, stirred in with a generous portion of The Chronic by Dr Dre, add an entire Flock of Seagulls (if they are available at your local supermarket) and served on a fragrant bed of Eagles of Death Metal.
I know what you're thinking.......if I'm so full of great ideas, then why don't I start my own night?

Well maybe I will. It will be probably be fantastic.

And then again, it would probably die flat on its arse.

Live Music Reviews - ..divided by time at The Indie Society, University of Hull, Thursday 25th March By Reena Mistry
By Reena Mistry - The Sesh is held at The Linnet & Lark, down Princes Ave every Thursday night. Any band who commit themselves to influences such as Queens of the Stone Age, The Pixies, REM and Velvet Underground may appear to have bitten off more than the average mouthful. However, from the intro that provided the Read more...

Live Music Reviews - Blue Sand at The Sesh -
Linnet & Lark - 1st April 04 By Rich Porter
The Sesh is held at The Linnet & Lark, down Princes Ave every Thursday night. Having never been to one of these nights I wasn't sure what to expect, probably just another live band night? Far from it, as the first thing to greet you as you walk through the door is the resident DJ who blasts out great music and nearly all of it Read more...

Music Reviews- Flatline, Die-For,The 30 Second Dead, Twice A Riot, The White Room, 28th March By Dick Spring
Unfortunately The Defected were on stupidly early and I missed them but I did arrive in time to catch Twice a Riot, featuring Harry's great new hair! I have to say that this band do this screamo metal/ hardcore crossover pretty well and is certainly a giant leap forward from singer (screamer) Harry and bassist Arthur's previous musical outings. There was an air of expectancy this evening. The Landau’s, about to release their debut single were playing, their appearance backed by an enthusiastic and supportive following of fans and family. This made for a really good atmosphere. And it turned out to be a night and a half. Read more...

Music Reviews - Inner Terrestrials, Die For, Flatline (with Greg) Adelphi, Hull 21st March 2004 By Dick Spring
Well, indeed, what an eventful evening! With Mark (Flatline's singer) unavailable due to work commitment, it was left up to Greg, from Freaks Union to join his friends for an impromptu run through a couple of songs. On the face of it, this seemed like a bit of fun, though it would appear that certain people saw it differently Read more...

Music Reviews-The Ordinary Boys,Mower,The Applewhites, The Hideaways at Adelphi, Hull 10 March By Dick Spring
Well this is the second Under the Influence night I've experienced and it has left me impressed. It would appear there is another visionary Promoter in the city (alongside Nigel, of the legendary Smash it Up Punk Nights) that quite frankly leaves all the other rank amateurs standing. Speaking to Dean Shakespeare (for that is he) it was clear that here is a Read more...

Music Reviews - A Night at the Asylum -
Hull Uni - 9th March 04 By Michelle Dee
The Asylum beckoned for three excited girls on a cold Tuesday night. They were not mad, just crazy about Cracktown who were playing that night at the newly refurbished Asylum venue at Hull University. Coming out of the Old Grey Mare we spotted our heroes, King Rat and The Silver Fox striding down Cottingham Road. Overjoyed to be in the Read more...
