One Lick Less, Park & Ride, Sidewinder at The New Adelphi Club, Hull
Saturday 8th May 04
By Douglas Colvin
|
This Saturday night saw Hull's Adelphi club doing what it does best. On stage were three local bands playing different styles of music to a decidedly mixed audience of friends, fans and curious passers by.
On stage first were One Lick Less, three guys playing an unusual brand of Rock 'n' Roll. In an abrupt five song set, they managed to touch upon the Blues, Funk, Punk and Rockabilly. Sometimes simultaneously, always energetically, and very, very
loudly.
|
|
|
Having played to a full house at The Adelphi in support of The Cribs and The Others a few days earlier they
were clearly relaxed and confident.
Is there anything better than seeing bands enjoying their music? The guitarist/singer managed to break two strings
in the third song which the caused the set to be cropped.
However, the audience was clearly enjoying the show.
|
One Lick Less must be one of the most original sounding bands on the Hull music scene.
Sighting influences as diverse as James Brown, The Stooges, The Velvet Underground and Link Wray they are
certainly a more satisfying alternative to the numerous Strokes-esq, NME fashioned punk wanabees that
clutter the Hull music scene.
Up next were the nights youngsters Park & Ride. Their set began with a version of Best at Being Bad,
from the musical Bugsy Malone. This set the tone for a diverse set.
|
|
|
I'd imagine that they've been listening to The Coral and similar bands.
There is clearly some song writing talent here.
These guys can't have been more than 17 or 18 years old.
Despite this they gave a tight and polished performance, covering a lot of similar ground to other local bands
such as The Landaus, but with considerably more originality.
|
Tonight's headliners were established local indie-rockers Sidewinder. Once again, there was some great song
writing on display.
The type of music these guys play is definitely out of vogue at the minute, but the sixties influences were
shinning through.
Much of the guitar work was like a combination of The Byrds with The Edge of U2.
The two-part vocal harmonies used in most of songs gave many of the songs a Beatles edge, but without sounding
like the dull throwbacks of Mr. Gallagher.
|
|
|
The lead vocalist was strong and his voice carried well. The crowd, obviously high on the success
of the local football team, reacted well to the band. The vibe was mellow, but at the same time energetic.
All in all, a great display of Hull's diverse musical talent, in Hull's best music venue.

Music Reviews - Smash it Up! Dead or American, Windum Earl, The Favours, Minions of Jeffrey At the Adelphi, Hull Thursday 6th May 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Well, on the face of it, it looked like a somewhat strange billing, but the bringing together of these different strands
of punk rock, two of which were from Hull, and though widely regarded as indie they contained ample loudness and blariness to qualify for the tag.
Openers Minions of Jeffrey, appeared to have more people on stage than

The night started off with considerable excitement, everyone at college had been buzzing for weeks, and the promo posters had been up at uni and college and handed out in town to mini-moshers et al.
The line up included two local bands; Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt, and a signed band I'd not heard of before.
During the sound checks we

Music Reviews-Under the Influence at the Adelphi - 24th April 04 Blue Sand, ..divided by time and The Vultures By Michelle Dee

Saturday night at the Adelphi and the crowd was buzzing.
The Vultures kicked the night off in style.
Their first song was for the Johnno's.
I don't know which Johnno's they were referring to but it didn't matter.
With a catchy Led Zep sounding riff they launched into their 20 song set.

Million Dead, The Freaks Union and Silence In The Streets At the Welly - 27th April 04 By Dom (plus Gallery)
|
|
Tonight's show was put on and promoted by the WellyClub. They really surpassed themselves promoting this show, I can't remember ever being at a show as full as
this in Hull.
There were well over 300 people attending and due to the size of the venue it was the perfect amount. I haven't been into the big room since it's been

Music Reviews - Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. By Brian
|
|
The bottom line; Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band.
They don't claim to be anything else. Don't want to be anything else.
Off stage, Cal, Danny and Gaz are pleasant enough young men, on stage however, they seem to transform, Hyde-like, into aggressive noise merchants, peddling their own brand of punk.

Music Reviews-
Jesse James / Fraction of the Cost / The Trailers
The Adelphi, Thur 15th April 2004 By Mike Rofone.
|
|
Entering the Adelphi Club and hearing a band completing their sound check is never an unusual thing.
To be quite honest it's welcoming, like an appetiser it gets your taste buds going making you anxious to try the first course.
As usual, the Adelphi is always welcoming, its timeless décor and stale smells of spilt booze and stubbed out cigarettes

Jesse James / Fraction of the Cost / The Trailers
The Adelphi, Thur 15th April 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Smash it Up teamed up with the Adelphi to bring the self styled Punk Soul Brothers Jesse James back to the Adelphi.
Yet another busy night, as always when Jesse James swing into town. First up were three piece pop punk band THE TRAILERS from Bridlington, and contrary to reports about them being dreadfully bad, I can report
