Million Dead, The Freaks Union and Silence In The Streets
At the Welly - 27th April 04
By Dom
Tonight's show was put on and promoted by the WellyClub.
They really surpassed themselves promoting this show, I can't remember ever being at a show as full as this in Hull.
There were well over 300 people attending and due to the size of the venue it was the perfect amount.
I haven't been into the big room since it's been redecorated and it looks really swish in there now.
I must admit I didn't think painting the walls of a gig venue pink would add to the atmosphere but with the lights down low the place looked awesome.
First up were Silence In The Streets who played a near perfect set churning out their Rage Against the Machine meets The Music meets System of a Down meets At the Drive-in noise.
Fronted by singer Sam singing his socio-political lyrics dealing with issues from rape to the current state of the governments foreign affairs.
The sound was amazing and they played the best set I have ever seen them play.
Musically it's heavily guitar driven with a lot of distortion.
These guys seem to progress every time I see them and are rapidly growing all the time.

Next on saw a very welcomed return of hull favourites The Freaks Union.
It's really good to see they have sorted their problems out and their new stuff to me shows a progression in their music.
I can hear more of Greg's influences.
It seems odd trying to breakdown what they sound like 'cause you must be deaf if have never heard them before! Well basically its get-up-and-go style punk rock chaos.
The sheer energy and stage presence of this band ignite the crowd, who immediately start dancing in a really friendly way.
Nobody got hurt and lead singer Jimbo's attempts to get everyone lying on their backs mimicking dying flies had a few willing responses as a couple of guys lay on their backs waving their arms in the air.
At one point I noticed a few of the hardcore kids eat-downing at the back. It seemed kind of weird but it worked in a way.

By this time the effects of drinking before and during the show were taking their toll on me and I can't remember a lot about Million Dead's set.
I hate using this word but their set was very emo based with a lot of rock in them, which seemed to be shooting for a mainstream audience. Bits sounded identical to Hundred Reasons.
They seemed to be one of those bands that make really good tuneful songs without actually having much musical ability. But I was drunk.
Performance-wise Freaks Union outdid them.
But with a lead singer wearing a Good Clean Fun tee shirt and sporting a cowboy hat, you really can't go wrong!
Added to that they had an Australian female bass player who seemed to have quite a lot of male eyes on her, if you get my drift.
It was a really friendly atmosphere all night, which gave everyone a good attitude for the club night afterwards.
I think the Welly club is really underrated.
Upstairs you get mostly metal - a bit like downstairs at Pozition or Spiders.
But downstairs at the Welly is the best room.
There you get a really good mix of everything from Hot Water Music to Converge, from
Coheed and Cambria to Lamb of God and everything in-between.
All in all a really good night and well worth a fiver.

Electric Eel Shock & Antiproduct at The Kazbah, Scarborough 25th March 04 By Steve Rudd
Antiproduct is the coolest and most exhilarating punk band since The Sex Pistols.
Stopping at nothing to put on the most entertaining show possible at every gig they play, this wacky quintet might be based in London, but they make it known loud-and-clear that they prefer

Music Reviews - Adelphi, Hull, 18th April
Jaws drop in Hull and appreciation for local bands rise.

Crowbar Smile, DUMPVALVE, Mad Crowd Disease, Multiple Injuries, Planet 10
It's cold, it's wet and it's miserable. Now there are two things I could do on this gloomy Sunday afternoon in April.
Number one; I could stay at home in a lovely quiet village, pondering how I've become so overdrawn and kick myself when I figure out the reason.
Or,

Multiple Injuries at The Ringside, Hull - Wednesday 14th April 2004 By Dick Spring
This venue is a new addition to the Hull circuit, and I was informed that the booking is in the very capable hands of Determination Inc (who were the driving force behind, the late, lamented, Moriarty's ) and are bringing the magic touch to this venue, with a newly installed 2k PA system.
The new Wednesday night

Album Reviews - The Trailers - From The Top - 7 track EP - By the Sea By Steve Rudd
The DIY punk ethic is still alive and kicking, even down the East Coast of England in the semi-sunny seaside town of Bridlington.
While there aren't many great bands kicking-out of Bridlington at the moment (save for the mighty Goth-Rock spectacular that is Torso Horse)

Album Reviews - The Alarm - In The Poppyfields (12-track album - Snapper Music - 2004) By Steve Rudd
25 years down the punk-rock 'n' roll line and The Alarm - assembled around the ever-photogenic mainman Mike Peters - is still going strong.
In fact, the Cardiff-based Alarm's ringing louder than ever on the back of some fabulous media exposure that vaulted right around the world and back because of the fact that Mike craftily decided
