Flatline, The City Ghost's, Displacements, Green Ginger and Bundy at Springfield on the Common, Hull - Thursday 20th May 2004
By Dick Spring
|
|
Damn good job the team rolled up 15 mins early, as there was a late addition to the bill in the form of
Bundy, who were into their stride as we entered.
There were an impressive number of people at this unusual but very good venue. It had the look of
what the Adelphi ought to have, though it was sadly lacking on the PA front
(so a bit of investment wouldn't go amiss).
|
|
An Excellent room with good stage and perfect view from all angles. But I digress.
Like I say, Bundy were well into their stride, with their hybrid punk rock and metal sound,
there were hints of Pantera, but I felt a great deal of Good Riddance,
which is no bad thing.
I must also say that the singer's Bad Brains T shirt got him some serious brownie points, for me.
|
|
After a brief interlude, Green Ginger did their thing, with the recent addition of a
proper drummer in the shape of Beki, and here's the gratuitous mention of the
fact that she made the experience far more enjoyable!
I have to say they have made some great strides forward, though there is still work to be done.
They struck me as not quite knowing what exactly it was they were trying to achieve, yet
there are signs of promise, when they harness it.
|
|
For those of you wondering what the hell I'm on about, there was a lot of The Strokes
new wave in there but the singer was also doing his best Kurt homage, and there was a brave attempt at Ska, even.
The room was by now pretty damn full, with a very successful 100+, so a big pat on the back to the
bands and the punters for showing up, it shows what can be achieved when effort is made.
|
|
Displacements - What can you say? This young band are a sight to behold, after a
rough and ready start to their set, and the first dancers of the night, they got going and there
was no turning back, leaping around the stage with such confidence.
After gigging relentlessly for months now, they were fully deserving of their place as second to last on
the bill, for ones so young the future is bright.
|
There was a surprise inclusion to the bill, in the form of Greg (Freaks Union) and
his sister, who do have a collective name, but it escapes me right now. (The City Ghost's)Ed.
Sadly, it was so generically angsty-punk-singer tries to be all mellow to show his depth, and you
couldn't really hear the joint female vocal, which did her a disservice, as I'm sure there was some depth there.
|
|
|
I would have more empathy if this was genuinely original, yet it really wasn't.
That said, I feel I need to see them again, in better circumstances to get a better feel for it.
As the night was still young, it seemed somewhat of a surprise to find the band of the night -
bar none - Flatline, playing so early.
|
I don't really know what else to say about this band, that I haven't said already, but get your
fuckin' ass along to see them! If they don't shake your ass and you don't feel this band, then you are dead.
They proved tonight, probably for the first time, that there are bands other than Freaks Union
and The Supatones capable of igniting a crowd, and maybe they are the Freaks Union
for a new generation.
|
|
|
Though it pains me to say it, they have the SONGS and a real swagger now of a band that loves what it
does and has the confidence in their own ability, to rip it up in a big room, with a big audience.
I will stop now as I want to heap praise on this band but I'm running the risk of sounding sycophantic,
so I won't go further. This is what punk gigs are about; bands, spirit, and unity, all in evidence tonight.

Open mic acoustic nights are conceptually strange, and yet they have a charm and magic all of their own, stemming from their participatory nature. All of these nights are essentially the same.

Music Reviews - Friday 14th May at The White Room Dumpvalve + Blind Frog Ernie By Barney Gumble

|
Friday night at the White Room saw two of Hull's top bands playing together for the
first time in this unusual billing.
Blind Frog Ernie took the stage at 9 to a warm crowd and soon had everyone dancing.
This band always leaves you with the sense that they've enjoyed playing and tonight was no exception.
Catchy guitar riffs fused with

Music Reviews - After the Silence, The Bonnitts and The Cardinals Under the Influence Hull Adelphi 12th May By special guest Reviewer Lee - from

After hearing more good things about local music entrepreneur Dean Shakespeare, I headed down to the good old Adelphi to check out the latest instalment of his fortnightly showcase Under the Influence.
Upon arriving at the Adelphi around 8:30pm, I wandered into an already busy atmosphere, bustling with an air of expectation
