The Mingers , Bosseye , The 30 Second Dead , Diverse Unit at The Adelphi Tuesday 13th July 2004
By Dick Spring

Bloody hell! It's about time! A proper punk band that had me rolling back the years.
I am, of course talking about Diverse Unit, a bunch of snot nosed punks all around the
age of 15 or so, with a passion and something to say.
The songs were there as well, and for a first gig it showed a talent and tightness of a
band with far more experience. It brought to mind GBH and The Ejected, and that can't be bad.
It makes for a refreshing change to hear a band that don't just scream over a racket,
like so many bands that masquerade as punk these days.
|
An example of the aforementioned comment would have to be The 30 Second Dead, who have some great
intro's to their songs but all too often get a little repetitive.
Although on occasion I have enjoyed this band, I wasn't in the mood tonight, though you
couldn't fault them for effort and the mosh pit that they got going.
It was certainly lively that's for sure. There were some familiar faces in the shape of
Bosseye from North Yorkshire, as they are ex The Write Offs, who were
regulars to Hull in the late 90's.

It was good to catch up with them now, with their chaotic brand of Ska Punk that brought to
mind Minions of Jeffrey who played the Adelphi Back in May.
I think the overriding thing about them was that their sound was maybe a little too busy
with a lot going on in there.
At the same time this gives them the charm and boisterousness of your average Under 6's nursery,
and you cannot help but warm to them and give them your time.
|
The Mingers, from Leeds, who were headlining tonight, were a new name to me, though their
profile has risen recently, having been on tour with American act Leftover Crack.
I had visions of some bad shouty punk, but I was pleasantly surprised.
They were pretty handy. I guess the most obvious comparison would be that of
the Distillers, as they had a female singer with voice capable of being heard
over their loud and brash music, which had echoes of Sick of it all, and even a
bit of Leatherface was in there.

|
|
Sadly the audience had depleted noticeably, but The Mingers did a fine job of
whipping up the ones that stayed.
As a final note i would say that band of the night for me was Diverse Unit.

Audience Comment (emailed in)
By Paul Claxton

Diverse Unit were immense, especially considering it was their first gig.
They did 8 of their own songs (not covers) which I also thought was impressive
as bands don't usually play this many on their first gig.
I think they'll go far and would definitely be interested in seeing them again.
Any info would be great.
The Mingers were also cool, was really impressed. Never heard them before but yeah, cool!

Payola and Malibu Stacey at The Springhead Sunday 11th July By Dick Spring |

ROCK'N'ROLL!!!!!!!!! Bring it on.
This is what gigs are about; the like of which we haven't seen for many a long
year and in a proper little rock 'n' roll venue.
The Springhead, not known for being a hotbed of originality, despite being
an excellent place to see live music, has stuck it's neck out and booked a fast
rising UK rock band

Le Shed at The Ringside - Wednesday 30th June By Dick Spring |
|
It's been a while since we've had a band in Hull to fill the void left by DumpValve,
since they took a heavier more thrashy direction.
Well, now such a band exists in the Form of Le Shed, who many will have seen gigging
like mad round Hull in recent months, building up a healthy profile.
And now it was the turn of The Ringside to host them
