For Those Of You About to Goz, We Salute You! Punk Day at The White Room Sunday 23rd May
By Daniel Laney
Next Page.
|
|
Political movements and serious messages were made on this blistering hot May afternoon.
Until today I was virgin of the White Room, I didn't know what to expect but after fifteen
minutes within this unusual venue, it was safe to say I felt comfortable with my surroundings.
In the past I was a huge follower of the Hull Punk Scene.
|
If there was a gig I would be there and if there was a pit to be smashing things up in you could
guarantee I would be doing my bit to help destroy anything I could get my hands on.
After a couple of years at university and experiencing a few of lifes other little chores,
today was the day to come back and see how much the scene has changed.
|
|
|
First up today was fresh-faced Green Ginger.
If you're a fan of Sublime then this local four piece are definitely for you, by fusing
catchy punk aggressive choruses and serious Ska chord developments they really can get
members of the crowds head's nodding.
Although the band are definitely great musicians and boast a superb singer, they seem
to be very uncomfortable when it comes to playing in front of people.
|
If they could put as much effort into their performance as they do practicing then
this would have been an even better set.
Next up this afternoon The School Girls take to the stage.
These two guys backed with their extremely talented drum machine are a good example
of how tastes in music and have changed in Hull over the last few years.
|
|
|
Although fast and really aggressive The School Girls look like they have just stepped
out of The Wonder Years and just by looking at them and listening to the contrasting
sounds they produce, you realise that they mean business and are happy to break
any opinions on what it is that makes a band.
With songs entitled with tongue in cheek meanings such as Nine Inch Tails,
The School Girls sound like psycho-billy meets the White Stripes and if you want something
to scare your parents with, these are the guys for the job.
|
After a lengthy gap in between sets, Right On Youth burst into their ferocious set.
Again, this is another band lacking a musician, with just a guitarist, drummer and lanky
lead singer they can still produce the aggression and power that comes with any hardcore band.
Little interaction is made between songs, however the quote of the day was definitely
provided by Right On Youth - Six hundred quid and you can't even stay in tune for one F**king song!
This comment was thrown hilariously at the aggressive guitarist who found it a puzzling
task to keep his instrument in good working order.
|
|
|
If you like fast, aggressive and energetic music then you have to try and get to one
of Right On Youth's shows.
|
|
Today's biggest surprise came in the shape of Die For.
With obvious political messages, this band have something to say and you will listen!
Everything from Animal Rights to the lack of water being sold here in the
White Room today, Die For are not just some cliché hardcore punk band, they have
been educated with what is right and what is wrong with the modern day world.
|
After not being afraid to speak their minds about the water policies of The White Room,
Die For cause a small political movement here today and encourage the audience to
boycott the fluids on sale and go to a local deli to buy their refreshments.
Die For are a great band, really fast and passionate and clever chord sequences
backed up by intense drumming make them a treat for the eyes and ears.
|
|
|
The day's biggest surprise was unfortunately followed by the day's biggest disappointment.
Break Even were just mind numbing, they play straight up done before Retro Rock 'n' Roll
that was more predictable than who would win between Manchester United and Millwall.
Unfortunately it is hard to mention any stand-out tracks from this band today because they
all seemed to sound the same.

Music Reviews - Jet Plane Landing , Drive Like You Stole It & Delta Volts at Fibbers, York Friday 7th May 04 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Progressive rock 'n' roll is the order of the day where the Delta Volts are concerned, their
intoxicatingly complex and mesmerising music bulldozing the foundations of all rock music that has been
and gone before.
Relying heavily and heartily on epic soundscapes and mighty guitar

Music Reviews - Jet Plane Landing, Harvey Half Devoured and Break Even at The Adelphi Sunday 9th May 04 By Amy Willits.
|
|
One of the last surviving totally independent rock venues, Hull's Adelphi Club saw yet another first-rate rock
night, and I was there to witness the show.
Jet Plane Landing, a distinct, punk rock four-piece were top of the bill with support from the enthused and
highly enjoyable Harvey Half Devoured and Break Even.

Music Reviews - Rides The Bus CD Release Night at Bivouac, Duke Of Wellington, Lincoln with Mad Crowd Disease, Negative IQ, Neon Child - 23rd April 04 By Steve Jones
|
|
Unfortunately I missed the first band, Neon Child, although I heard that they went down well especially as
they are relatively new to playing live.
The second band up was Negative IQ. These boys were starting to build up a following round the Lincoln area
last year before they skedaddled off to Leicester Uni and other
