Music Live Band Nightclubs Reviews
PACKED TO THE RAFTERS The Adelphi, De Grey Street, Hull.
Homespun Support: John & Wayne By Daniel Laney

Local Heroes & Northern Trio's, tonight's audience get the chance to take a step back and be reflective on their lives.

The weather this evening is definitely playing for the cold and cloudy team, but the local fans are willing to queue further and further down the street just to get the chance to see one of Hull's local heroes return with his new band Homespun.
It is understandable why it's almost impossible to travel around The Adelphi this evening. Usually in the past, the crowd has consisted of between fifty and hundred people but tonight's audience capacity must have easily stepped over the two hundred mark. It may have been the excessive number of people in the room tonight but The Adelphi looked respectable and I'm tempted to even say it was almost perfect.
With candle's flickering between the gusts of air provided by the air conditioning, you begin to feel as if you arre located in a small Parisian café on a mid summers eve, perhaps even enjoying a bottle or two of red wine.

But let us not get too bogged down with how impressive the venue looked. When the tongue in cheek duo John & Wayne arrived accompanied by female vocalist Dorie Jackson, all attention was placed upon the small stage and the fun began.
Please however don't think that in anyway John & Wayne are just another comedy musician act, their songs may be based upon life's troubles such as lack of beer, lack of hair and lack of knowledge when using a nail gun, but they have used these scenarios as an interesting way of wording some emotional times in their lives.
Playing in bands together since they were at school and now in their early thirties, with their songs it would be more than possible to make a film on John & Wayne's lives although it would definitely be filled to the rafters with black humour you would still be able go away with a warm glowing and positive sensation.

This is exactly what John & Wayne provided, looking at life with a shrug of the shoulders their catchy acoustic melodies can let us have the chance to feel life is too short to worry, look at these guys they're doing exactly what they want. And let us not forget the attractive voice of Dorie Jackson; with the ability to turn the black humour into more of a serious message, she is an integral part of the groups sound.
Note perfect and a positive glow, I beg you please to check out John & Wayne.

The switching of bands equipment usually takes an eternity, thankfully tonight the audience's well-being was kept in mind and without further a do Hull welcomes Homespun.
David Rotheray, guitarist with The Beautiful South has come back to his local area with his new family of musicians and it has to be said that even though he is of celebrity status in no way does he steel the lime light this evening.

Homespun's very own Sam Brown has a voice that is out of this world, dressed likes she is going to a prom in the late fifties you can tell she enjoys every minute of playing music with this original and refreshing outfit.
Lets focus on the sound of the group, well to be honest there's a bit everything gone into creating Homespun's unique structure.

Country, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Soft Rock 'n' Roll, Funk etc, etc. literally everything, the great benefit of the sound this band creates is that it is all contained into one perfect outfit.
Though it has to be said from time to time the style of songs with their dynamics can begin to resemble a Beautiful South tune, however they do redeem themselves and have included a more contemporary sound by using styles and techniques that resemble modern alternative artists such as Damien Rice.

Homespun have definitely made the perfect soundtrack to what people should be listening to when having a barbecue or when the sun is going down. It really is the perfect music to relax to.
Attention must be drawn to the price of the tickets at The Adelphi tonight, yes both bands were really amazing and both very unique but seven pounds for a ticket was perhaps asking a little to much.

I don't want to finish on a down note so what I will say is that this kind of music was never my cup of tea, in fact just the utter of words such as acoustic and soft rock would have made me run a mile.
Tonight I don't know whether or not I have matured or can just appreciate different kinds of music but whatever it is I really enjoyed listening to something different and being surrounded by a pleasant group of people and witnessing a local hero return made it that little bit more special.

Music Reviews - For Those Of You About to Goz, We Salute You! Punk Day, The White Room Sun 23rd May By Daniel Laney
If there was a gig I would be there and if there was a pit to be smashing things up in you could guarantee I would be doing my bit to help destroy anything I could get my hands on. After a couple of years at university and experiencing a few of lifes other little chores, today was the day to come back and see how much the scene has changed. Read more...

Music Reviews - Superscape, Limozis & Blue Sand - Adelphi 13th May 04 Will Somebody Write This Review For Me? By Cilla
It's a hard life. I'm not necessarily complaining and I'd like to explain. And I'd like to use a particular night at the Adelphi as an example. It's a perfect one. Thursday 13th May. Superscape, Blue Sand and The Limozis were playing at my nearest local venue, the Adelphi. The gig was Read more...

Music Reviews - Flatline, The City Ghost's, Displacements, Green Ginger and Bundy at Springfield on the Common, Hull - Thursday 20th May 2004 By Dick Spring
Damn good job the team rolled up 15 mins early, as there was a late addition to the bill in the form of Bundy, who were into their stride as we entered. There were an impressive number of people at this unusual but very good venue. It had the look of what the Adelphi ought to have, though it was sadly Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday at the Spring Bank Tavern
By Ed Paull
Open mic acoustic nights are conceptually strange, and yet they have a charm and magic all of their own, stemming from their participatory nature. All of these nights are essentially the same. The organisers busily running about; the regulars sitting drinking and Read more...
