Wednesday 19th May, Adelphi Hull - This Girl. Support: My Awesome Compilation, Lauwine By Daniel Laney
|
|
Sense of Humour & Sensitivity: Emotion and laughter purchased a ticket at the Adelphi this
evening and the crowd were happy to see them.
|
This evening's entertainment at the Adelphi was one hundred percent pure and
positive evidence of why it is a fulfilling and rewarding experience to write about bands.
It was basically a flip of the coin that was to decide what bands would be the most preferred viewing
on this early summer evening and I'm more than pleased to announce that fate would take its toll and
choose the Adelphi as this nights form of entertainment.
|
|
|
It was no surprise the evening would start off slow and by looking around, you would imagine that
everyone here was naked and covered in boils.
Tension and shyness between the groups of people tonight
could be cut with a knife and served as medium rare with onion rings, chips and a pepper sauce.
|
When watching the local band Lauwine complete their sound-check, I felt this evenings music
was going to be a let down and how glad I am that these four guys from Hull were going to
stick two fingers up at me, laugh in my face and make me think twice.
This band is definitely a must-see, it's a combination between Finch, Alkaline Trio
and they certainly include Red Hot Chili Pepper style riffs and bass lines when creating
their unique sound.
|
|
|
One minute you think Christ, these guys should be on Top of the Pops alongside
the likes of Busted and then your ears are made to beg to differ, you find yourself
thinking you're driving a huge eight ton truck down a massive freeway in America
nodding your head to what can only be compared to as something a red-neck would listen
to whilst enjoying their Sunday dinner and requesting another slice of hog from their pops.
|
|
Lauwine defiantly include a refreshing sense of humour and showmanship and a sign of becoming
semi-pro musicians is definitely on board.
With a cover of one of my favourite kids TV
programmes theme tune from when I was growing up (Round the Twist) with a tongue-in-cheek
Korn bass twanging approach, you can't help but stay glued to the spot as Lauwine tell you
they may be local but they have the potential to become a band that put East Yorkshire on the map.
|
Next up tonight My Awesome Compilation take to the stage. At first it was hard to decide do
I like this band or not? Ok, they sound an absolute carbon copy of The Get Up Kids,
but is that necessarily a bad thing? I mean The Get Up Kids can charge up to twenty pounds
a ticket and this band can perform broken heart lullabies just as well, if not better.
If you're looking for a band to provide the perfect sound track to your first teen
relationship break up then look no further, M.A.C are the perfect antidote for the mental
torment and anguish that young love brings.
|
|
|
Although this very emotional group bring a slight tear to the eye, you can't help but
imagine that at the same time they could also be the perfect soundtrack to this years
summer and their infectious and catchy hooks and melodies make you bob up and down like
a banana boat in Ibiza.
|
|
After supporting Brand New on their latest tour you would imagine My Awesome Compilation
to be blowing up their own heads with huge puffs of breath, again I swallow my pride and
yet again I am proven wrong, their sincerity and love for playing smaller venues and crowd
interaction dominates this evenings audience. Although very predictable M.A.C are very addictive!
|
A quick shuffle on the stage, a quick pint sipped, a quick chat amongst the kids and
through the ambience provided by Massive Attack, young and loyal teen fans push forward
to greet the more than extraordinary This Girl.
This band took the sting out of paying four pounds this evening and it's almost
impossible to describe and put down through my fingers what actually happened within
the Adelphi's four walls.
|
|
|
Half the time I was sttting there pulling my hair out trying to work out what the
hell is this?!! Is it punk? Is it Emo? Is it Rock? I had no idea!
But to be honest by the end of the performance I just didn't care.
The closest thing I can possibly describe This Girl to be is Glass Jaw
meets At The Drive In and then runs off and has an affair with the
writing style found only on the new Incubus CD.
|
|
The rhythm section was something that can only be desired and I am happy to
place bets on the fact the drummer and the bassist were twins separated at
birth, each anticipating one anothers next step. You begin to feel yourself
holding your breath knowing that every gasp of air you take may just block
out a split seconds moment of sheer genius.
|
Its great to see the lead singer proudly step back in between verses and appreciate
his bands musicianship and what's even more brilliant is the fact that This Girl
are so friendly and modest, you feel a sense of longing and wish that these guys
were in your circle of friends.
Standing between members of the crowd, a group dynamic is felt between audience
and band and I'm more than proud to say I have seen such an event.

Music Reviews - Wednesday at the Spring Bank Tavern By Ed Paull

Open mic acoustic nights are conceptually strange, and yet they have a charm and magic all of their own, stemming from their participatory nature. All of these nights are essentially the same.
The organisers busily running about; the regulars sitting drinking and

Music Reviews - Friday 14th May at The White Room Dumpvalve + Blind Frog Ernie By Barney Gumble
|
|
Friday night at the White Room saw two of Hull's top bands playing together for the
first time in this unusual billing.
Blind Frog Ernie took the stage at 9 to a warm crowd and soon had everyone dancing.
This band always leaves you with the sense that they've enjoyed playing and tonight was no exception.
Catchy guitar riffs fused with

Music Reviews - After the Silence, The Bonnitts and The Cardinals Under the Influence Hull Adelphi 12th May By special guest Reviewer Lee - from
|
|
After hearing more good things about local music entrepreneur Dean Shakespeare, I headed down to the good old Adelphi to check out the latest instalment of his fortnightly showcase Under the Influence.
Upon arriving at the Adelphi around 8:30pm, I wandered into an already busy atmosphere, bustling with an air of expectation
