Music Live Band Clubs Reviews Bookmark and Share
CRACKTOWN and Friends continued
By Elsie Creek
Start
Still, I have a copy of their latest album Cupboard Soup, on which CrackTown collaborate in a weird merging of styles for the track Spaceman's Walk.

It's perfect for chilling out to, with a couple of more upbeat numbers, and the more you listen to it, the more addictive it becomes.

I particularly like the song Invisible Distance of Love, which has some gorgeous male-female harmonising.

I would recommend seeing cowfisH, for although they are not exactly earth-shattering, in a live situation their talent is obvious.
If they are taking requests, I'd recommend Skin Deep and Eyes Open Wide. Their greatest strength is their lead vocalist, who has an amazing voice.

And if that's still not enough to interest all you guys out there, she's pretty cute too.
Kimya Dawson is one of the most refreshing artists outside of CrackTown that I have encountered in a long time.

There's a vulnerability in her voice and lyrics which tugs at the heartstrings and captivates the audience.

Though her recordings add depth to her music, the live experience is quite inexplicably cathartic.
Inexplicable because there's little variation in the chords or melodies, and she regularly breaks off mid-song when she forgets the next note or word, and yet the audience warms to her so much that it doesn't detract from her act.

In fact, there's a cosy familiarity in the way she asks for help and suggestions from her enthralled fans.
Kimya began performing as a street poet in New York, and the poetry is evident in her songs. Family features heavily in her work, and she hints at periods of mental instability.

Yet she tours internationally, wowing audiences with her combination of little-girl charm and true brilliance.
She is inspirational as a songwriter and artist, and a definite must-see.

Having mainly listened to the album Knock-Knock Who?, the tracks I found most memorable are My Bike, Nobody's Hippie and The Sound of Ataris. www.kimyadawson.com
Ten Men are another acoustic duo who can sometimes be seen supporting CrackTown in the Lamp. While they are undoubtedly good, there is not a great deal I can say about them.

Two young men, two guitars and a touch of harmonica. While one of the guys has been likened to an older version of Bart Simpson, the other is a definite contender for the Jesus Lookalike Crown.
The music is decent, if not extraordinary, and I have enjoyed both times I've seen them.

They've a way to go yet if they are to achieve much success in their own right, but they're young, so time is on their side.

Other artists supporting CrackTown in their CrackTown Carol were:

The Harri Watts Band, an older duo of men, Derek Harrison and David Watts use violin and acoustic guitar prove that ..you don't have to say c*nt every other word to be cool!

Songs include Coming Out and The Ciggy Song.
Johnny Zeusss (sic) is a Hull singer-songwriter with a political bent. Lyrics such as .. when I'm dead and gone, gonna keep some happy women livin' on .. may give some insight into his work, although he's still smiling.

He has been compared to Neil Young in style, although I'm afraid that to me he was just another aging rocker with an acoustic.

Yol. Well, Yol. He made an impact, that much is certain. It is more difficult to see just what the shell-shocked audience were thinking after his set of angry poetry had concluded.

This man had a bone to pick, and he had people just where he wanted them.
Rants about pigeons, and Everything I Do Is Wrong were typical of his material, and he was keen for everyone to know that if they didn't like it they should f*ck off.

But no-one walked out, and I must admit I enjoyed the performance.

A frank talk with the artist afterwards left me with a much greater understanding of what he was trying to do - Death Metal Poetry: it could be the Next Big Thing.

Music Reviews - Freebase - at Smash It Up at the
Adelphi Club, Hull - Friday 29th January 04 By Carolyn
I wasn't expecting to go out on Thursday night (January 29th) especially because of the crap weather but when Cilla asked if I wanted to go to the Adelphi Club with her to review a band called Freebase. I've got to say that my initial enthusiasm was for the very reasonably priced vodka and a chance up with my good mate, Cil. Read more...

Music Reviews - Rhythm Room, Baker Street, Hull -
Friday 6th February 2004 By Carolyn
The flyer bravely stated that Rhythm Room was to hold Hulls' first and only techno night on 7th Feb. with DJs' Swiv (10til12 headlining) and Chris Gawtry (12til2) playing techno upstairs and Andy Maile & Biskit (9til12) and Ben-jammin (12til2) downstairs playing funky house etc.. Well, it did. Hold it, Read more...

THE FREAKS UNION - Carling Academy, Liverpool -
12th February 2004 By Dick Spring
This was the first time I'd been to Liverpool in over 10 years (last time was on tour with Mega City Four) but I was impressed by the clean and neatly laid out interior of the newly refurbished Carling Academy (formerly The Lomax). We were in the middle sized room, the Academy Two, which was a Read more...

Music - Sending Out Demos - Some Simple
Advice By Glenn Williams (Lazyswede Productions)
There are thousands of demos posted daily to record companies and radio stations and managers etc. The chances of them all being heard is so small that sometimes it hardly seems worth bothering. In many cases, the problem is simply to do with the packaging of the product. I must admit, I was also once guilty of sending out a CDR or a cassette with just my telephone number.. Read more...

Music Reviews - The Saved, still life and We Start Fires
at Under the Influence
Billed as Ball crunching guitars with tingly piano riffs. These female pop punkers kick arse (NME). I was delighted to see some females at last (yes, I know you're out there).
A girl band? No, not quite. The drummer is a bloke! The line-up looks terrific ...

Music Reviews - A Champion Night - Welly Club 16th January By Cilla and Greg
One cold night in January (actually it was bloody freezing) my mate Greg and I went along to the Welly for a night with Champion Sound, the Reggae and Dancehall magicians who are currently gracing the Hull night club scene with their individual and blistering repertoire. We arrived early - about 10.15 and the club had a cold feel. There was a steady trickle of people arriving and after an hour or so, so the music began to build .. Read more...

Music Reviews - Pave - Promotional CD by Nick Quantrill
It's often said that bands use the opportunity of recording as a means of 'capturing the live sound.' What a load of cack! It's an opportunity to sound better than you do live! Due to the pressures of working far faster than a signed band would be expected to, and in lower quality studios, the recording process must be incredibly difficult for your average Hull band. Music Reviews - The Landau's - Sweet But True
(single/ DAGALOST Records) By Steve Rudd
Hull's something of a hotbed for cool indie-rock bands, and The Landau's - along with Still Life - are one of the freshest bands forging ahead within such a musical genre. An exclusively laddish quartet, this is the young band's first major release, and has been recorded at the city's famous Fairview Studios. The production qualities are fantastic, Read more...

Music Reviews - Pave - Linnet and Lark
05 February 2004 by Nick Quantrill
2004 hasn't been the greatest years so far. It kicked off more than adequately in the Old Town Square of Prague but went rapidly down hill from there. Returning home I battled unsuccessfully against tonsillitis for a couple of weeks before slipping on the ice and breaking two fingers! Almost recovered, I decided to unleash myself upon Hull once again. The return of 'The Sesh' at Linnet and Lark seemed as good any place... Read more...
