Superscape, Limozis and Blue Sand at the Adelphi 13th May 04
Will Somebody Write This Review For Me?
By Cilla
|
It's a hard life. I'm not necessarily complaining and I'd like to explain.
And I'd like to use a particular night at the Adelphi as an example. It's a perfect one.
Thursday 13th May. Superscape, Blue Sand and The Limozis
were playing at my nearest local venue, the Adelphi.
The gig was organised by Superscape themselves and I wanted to go.
It wasn't hard to persuade my buddy, Michelle to come along with me.
Only if it's a night off, she was quite insistent, No camera, no writing.
We can have a drink and enjoy the gig. And I agreed.
|
|
|
I could do with a night off - away from the kids, the computer and the unending job that is thisisUll.com.
So, the night comes and I'm getting ready to go out. What shall I wear? I know, I'll just
put on my jeans and my (thisisull) t-shirt.
Might as well... As we're about to leave I picked up the camera - just in case - but it is a night off.
All sorted, off we trot for an evening of pleasure, leisure and fun.
And it was. Except for the leisure bit.
|
The sound checking had just started so we had time for a drink in the comparative quiet of the bar
before the first band took to the stage.
The music started late but it didn't seem to matter at all.
Good atmosphere - very friendly with several faces I recognised and I
was pretty happy, relaxed and looking forward to all of it.
Blue Sand were just about the most relaxed and happy I've ever seen them.
Even the shyest bass player in the world, Ellie was smiling out at the audience.
|
|
Half way through the performance a shed load of CD's were slung into the audience - 2 new
track from the band, fresh from the recording studio.
I think they like playing here. It's undeniably a special venue - for the musicians as well
as for the audience.
|
|
But that's the problem. The Adelphi is a great place to take photos close
up to the musicians and my hand immediately started to twitch in the direction of the camera.
As hard as I tried to fight it, the urge to quickly load the batteries and head for the stage
was overwhelming. With an apologetic glance over my shoulder at the now deserted Michelle, I was off.
How could I not?
The next problem is this. I'm not a reviewer. I can't and won't pretend to have a huge
knowledge of each and every minute difference between every genre's genre.
|
|
To be perfectly frank, I've only just discovered Ska music - maybe I should be ashamed but I'm not.
I'm learning. This night was supposed to be free of the pressure of the write-up but
once I pick up the camera and start clicking, I know that someone somewhere is expecting a review.
|
|
And when you get a great set of photos from a gig, of course you feel they should be viewed
by everyone who wants to see.
And when the gig is an ace one, well it deserves a write up. But I can't do both!
|
|
|
|
It was the first time I'd seen The Limozis. They were cool. And photogenic.
Excellent vocals and nice guitars.
Their bass guitarist also played a lovely couple of numbers on the sax as a special guest with
Superscape.
If you want to know what I think of Blue Sand and Superscape, you
can read about them on other nights. They're really excellent local bands.
Superscape is Hull's finest (!) and tonight although struck with several disasters
and against all the odds they were terrific. Again.
|
|
|
Poor Rob Stott was frustrated beyond keeping his cool after the plethora of problems
from start to finish (0 proper sound checks, 3 guitars broken, 1 amplifier ruined, 2 cut hands,
1 bruised eye). But none of that mattered - it was a cosy kind of gig, everybody is friends with everybody.
So that's it - more of a non-review really but you get to see the pics.

Next time you see me out there with a camera, please help.
Buy me a pint and offer your opinion - write this review for me.

Flatline, The City Ghost's, Displacements, Green Ginger and Bundy at Springfield on the Common, Hull - Thursday 20th May 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Damn good job the team rolled up 15 mins early, as there was a late addition to the bill in the form of
Bundy, who were into their stride as we entered.
There were an impressive number of people at this unusual but very good venue. It had the look of
what the Adelphi ought to have, though it was sadly

Open mic acoustic nights are conceptually strange, and yet they have a charm and magic all of their own, stemming from their participatory nature. All of these nights are essentially the same.

Music Reviews - Friday 14th May at The White Room Dumpvalve + Blind Frog Ernie By Barney Gumble

Friday night at the White Room saw two of Hull's top bands playing together for the
first time in this unusual billing.
Blind Frog Ernie took the stage at 9 to a warm crowd and soon had everyone dancing.
This band always leaves you with the sense that they've enjoyed playing and tonight was no exception.
Catchy guitar riffs fused with

Music Reviews - After the Silence, The Bonnitts and The Cardinals Under the Influence Hull Adelphi 12th May By special guest Reviewer Lee - from

After hearing more good things about local music entrepreneur Dean Shakespeare, I headed down to the good old Adelphi to check out the latest instalment of his fortnightly showcase Under the Influence.
Upon arriving at the Adelphi around 8:30pm, I wandered into an already busy atmosphere, bustling with an air of expectation

Music Reviews - Jet Plane Landing, Harvey Half Devoured, Break Even, The Adelphi Sunday 9th May 04 By Charlotte Oakley.

The night kicked off with the support from the four piece rock band Break Even.
These guys did a 25 minute set which hit off with one of their newest songs, this is a catchy song and one of my favourites.
I was kept interested within their music due to their varied style of rock.
They have an interesting set of songs that are all very different from
