I kept thinking that these guys really do deserve more of a listen. They brought to mind the bassy tunes of Bad Company from years ago. And then they had a problem - a broken bass guitar, apparently.

Fado Rock have good harmonies and rocking riffs and I'd like to see them play somewhere smaller, like the Adelphi - I feel maybe they'd be better suited to a smaller, more intimate venue where they can converse with the crowd. You could tell they wanted to ..
I have to admit that it was the next band, Amber Souls that I really went to see. As The Psychedelic Breakfast, they were the best band I'd seen in the last 6 months. Last time they were at the Adelphi - a completely different place to play and to watch. I was a little anxious that they wouldn't be the same. And I thought to myself, Will they play Confusion (my favourite Psychedelic's song)?
Well, no they didn't - they've a complete new set list since I last saw them - but I need not have worried; although they took a while to get on with their set (they'd had no time for a sound check earlier, arriving in Hull late after being held up in traffic in Newcastle) I was soon listening to the familiar wa wa of the synth and enraptured by the voice of Nick Grimes. Oh yes, it was still THEM!

A class band from the off - I remembered being so impressed by them last time - they all work really hard and look like they love what they're doing. It's no wonder they're huge in their home town of Newcastle. I met up with Debs who'd come to Hull with the band from Newcastle. She told me that at home the Amber Souls play a lot of acoustic gigs - in fact this was the first time she'd seen them play like this!
This band just gel together and what they produce is brilliant - never a flat note, a missed chord and the beat just went on and on. Nick has the voice of Jon Anderson and Ollie the bass player is a spectacle to behold. But it's not just them - it's the whole thing that they all produce together which makes this a very special band indeed.

And they just got better. I loved it. Just goes to show, you can change your name but if there's talent there, it's just got to come out, so I guess I shouldn't feel too sad about the loss of Psychedelic.

After another short interlude and the gathering of a bit of a crowd in front of the stage, the Morphines took their place under the lights.
Amid controversial opinions from some of the crowd and indeed from what I'd heard previously, I needed to watch this band with an open mind.

They're a young band. They brought plenty of fans with them who danced and sang to the songs they knew. The lead singer is the sort of guy who'll get there simply because he will, or die. His torso covered in eyeliner writing - MORPHINES and SUCK ME. He's a bit of a cross between Sid Vicious and Mick Jagger - leaning into the audience, shouting his lyrics, pacing around the stage.
The drummer spins his sticks and the bass guitarist appeared to have his mouth taped up. They're a confident bunch but in truth I felt they were indeed 70% wannabe, 30% talent, a comment made to me by one of the audience.

Having said that, the people who loved them really did love them. I kept thinking of Haircut 100 and Sham 69 - a peculiar mix, something to do with their stage image alongside their Whats wrong with me? What's wrong with you? lyrics shouted into the audience.
The Morphines are unfortunately just not my cup of tea.

Music Reviews - The Favours, Dirty Dreamers, Sweet Assassin at The Welly Club on 16th Sept 04 By Andy Dykes
Tonight's openers Sweet Assassin get proceedings underway with an apology. Their bassist hasn't turned up and so they welcome onto the stage Paul, a real, bona fide session musician. The band open with a punchy little number called 'Touch Me I'm Sick'. It's a solid effort, although the action onstage Read more...

Music Reviews - Clever Brains Fryin', Young Heart Attack, The Bonnits, at The Welly Club 26th Aug 04 By Richard Stead
I kept telling myself; nah, no way is Keith Flint at Welly Club. I knew he loved the small venues he plays with The Prodigy but I never thought he would ever play in such a small place like The Welly. Well that was all put to one side when first bounced on MC Sir Real and MC Bad Manner shouting; Read more...

Music Reviews - Morrissey and The Dead 60's on Monday 6th September at Bridlington Spa By Steve Rudd.

What can I say, other than what an amazing night! Support band The Dead 60's, who took on the mighty stage at 8pm sharp for their half-hour set, were so brilliant that I'd almost forgotten that Morrissey was still to come after them. The Dead 60's are a young quintet impeccably Read more...

Music Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie, Le Shed, Shindigg, Killer of Saints, Displacements at the Piper Club Tuesday 7th September 2004 By Andy Dykes
I walk through the door of The Piper tonight, straight into a wall of sound created by three guys who look and sound like a very early Blink 182. This band is Displacements. It's hard to figure out exactly what's going on until they introduce a little subtlety. And then it all starts to sound pretty good. Vocally, neither singer Read more...

Music Reviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 19th August - 5678's, 59 Violets and The Morphines By Andy Dykes
I've heard tonight's openers The Morphines described as something like Ian Curtis singing with The Clash. If my musical arithmetic is correct, then The Morphines should sound something like Sham 69. And they do. A bit. While the garage rock revival grips the world like nuclear war, The Morphines hark back to an era Read more...
