Mo and I were happy to go back to the Asylum. It's been several months since our last visit and even though our names weren't on the guest list as we'd expected, Cheryl and her co-door lady (whose name I have forgotten - sorry and thanks!) let us in. Cheers to you both for that!

It looked like we were early for a change; Superscape were sound checking as we entered the club. It looked like they were a guitarist short - I couldn't see Rob Stott anywhere. I was thrilled to see Amber Souls (formerly The Psychedelic Breakfast) sitting around a table having a drink - lovely to see them again. They were just as friendly and happy as I remembered them. I asked them about their name change - and it transpired that for reasons known best to themselves and their management, the word Psychedelic just had to go. I don't know why they've chosen Amber Souls - to me, it's far more forgettable than The Psychedelic Breakfast, but really, what's in a name?
We met Mark from Flatline Media who had come along to watch the bands. He's currently offering to produce videos for local bands and had particularly come to see Superscape this evening.

Thee Box night is intended to provide an opportunity for local and student bands to play live in a large venue. Each band is expected to sell tickets - and the order in which they play is determined by who sells the most tickets. I guess that's fair. Visiting bands such as Amber Souls don't have to do this - I'm not sure how it's decided which slot they take.
First up tonight was Superscape (Hull's finest) with half a dozen of their best. And there was Rob - glad to see he was there after all.

Superscape started with a long, long intro to Waiting for Leon. They're relaxed and confident and with good reason. They're original, good to listen to and great musicians. The second song, Skeletons is more funky, with Pik, the lead singer's voice sounding almost like he's crying. This is the kind of music that I can imagine listening to in the open air - really something to get into.

Next they played Save Yourself; a melodious and beautiful song and followed it up with a new number, Seconds. I was pleased to hear that they're continuing to grow and flourish. They're really a very creative band.
Then back to the more familiar Mote (a masterpiece) followed by their finale, Minotaur - starting off so slow and unassuming, building to the inevitable crescendo - you wait for it and when it comes, it's like fireworks.

The size of the audience was a bit disappointing. Maybe the student year is young. Looking around, I thought that maybe they're not really ready for Superscape - spoiled by such quality so close to the start of the new academic year! But they did give the lads a good reception, with lots of cheers.
The intervals between bands saw DJs Jodof and Sarah on the decks. I ran over a got a quick photo of them!

Next on stage was Fado Rock. This was the first time I'd seen them play. They're a 4 piece band and they really do play rock - with singing, too!

The lead singer desperately needed more audience. An excellent front man for the group and really enthusiastic about his job, he somehow seemed to lose confidence when he had little response from the meagre crowd.

Music Reviews - Ernest and Ottogono at the Adelphi - 24th September By Michelle Dee
This was an eagerly anticipated gig by many. Having been fortunate enough to hear the lyrically superior E.P. Pimps B**ches and Superheroes a few weeks previous I too was looking forward to hearing the ever -popular Ernest. This must-have disc was ably reviewed on here by Read more...

Music Reviews - Biffy Clyro and This Girl at Asylum 24th September 2004 By Steve Rudd, Photos by Darren Rogers
If only I knew that the gigs at Asylum start earlier than most gigs. The Asylum, for those that don't know, is all swanky part and glorious parcel of the Hull University Campus (off Cottingham Road) - and, of-late, the venue has been welcoming a whole host of incredible talent. The gigs there tend to start just Read more...

Music Reviews - Biffy Clyro At Asylum - 24th September By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers
The cult of Biffy Clyro swirl, pulse and swell like a spring tide while their heroes rock mercilessly infront of them. On record, Biffy Clyro are a band whose songs range from the heart wrenchingly emotional to the jaw droppingly powerful. But I'm totally unprepared for the sheer intensity of the Biffy Clyro live experience. Read more...

Music Reviews - 30th August 2004 - Anarchy in Jaz Bar
By Kelly Bolder
It seems at the moment Hull's collection of successful young bands cannot help but impress. The line up tonight included 3 Hull bands and 2 other Northern stars. On a bank holiday Monday in Hull you could be forgiven for thinking that the places to be were Beverley Road and the Waterfront but you would be Read more...

Music Reviews -The Spark, BBC at The Piper, Tom Jackman, Thief, Le Shed, Turismo 21st Sept 04 By Andy Dykes
When I arrive at The Piper tonight, I'm greeted by my friend Charlotte. She's here as a photographer, but has also been roped into being compere for the evening. Apparently, preparations for tonight's show aren't running smoothly. Absent sound guys and faulty monitors aside, there are cameras everywhere. Read more...

Music Reviews - Fraction of the Cost, Displacements, Cracktown, Jenny Bromley Unite Against Fascism Sunday 19th September - Ringside by Daniel Laney
I've always admired the second floor function room at the Ringside bar. It looks and feels like a cheesy, but not tacky cabaret bar from Blackpool. If you were to glance at the stage you could imagine various acts leaping out at you from behind the curtains and annoying the hell out of you for half an hour whilst you Read more...

Music Reviews - Unite Against Fascism - Fraction of the Cost - The Ringside Sunday 19th September - By Andy Dykes
Tonight I expect The Ringside to be dimly lit and packed to the rafters with members of the Zapatistas, Rage Against the Machine and the Cuban government, all talking earnestly and with hushed voices. Possibly the A-Team too. I expect an air of urgency, a feeling that we're all taking part in some Read more...
