Winnebago Deal, Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt
At Full Metal Jacket, The Asylum, Hull Student Union -
30th April 04 By Thomas Law
I must admit I've been looking forward to this gig for ages.
The chance to see 3 up and coming metal bands in one night was gonna provide some serious relief from exam stress and if it didn't the alcohol is cheap enough to fill any void.
However, anyone would went would know that this was a night to remember.
First up were Brassik Lynt, (at half eight). This band have an air of professionalism around them.
The quality of their merchandise has to be seen to be believed!
The set was incredibly tight and I would guess that their main influence was probably Incubus.
The combination of impressive growls with catchy riffs, impressive harmonising and some simple but effective solos led to some memorable moments.
For me, the best part was the RATM anthem Killing the Name, now there's a song to make the crowd more vocal.
These guys came to do a job and they did it well, it was just a shame that the place was not overfull at the time.
Those people who couldn't be bothered to come down from the bar upstairs really missed out, I shall be looking forward to seeing these guys again.
Around half nine Killer of Saints stepped onto the stage.
Many people say this band like the Deftones mixed with Incubus but to me there's definitely a healthy dose of Pantera in there.
The guitarists pulled out some truly evil riffs coupled with a smattering of pinch harmonics to really get peoples heads nodding.
In fact, by the end there was quite a respectable pit growing at the front as the vocalist from Brassik Lynt joined them for a rendition of Head-up.
I saw this done at the White Room a while ago and although the Brassik guy hasn't quite got the vocal capacity of '20' from Dumpvalve, the performance still set the place on fire.
The band even mixed a snippet from the Fresh Prince into the song, which had everyone thinking Now where have I heard that before?
Indeed, the singer has a style all of his own with some tremendously deep lyrics and by the time the set finished, that double bass pedal had a special place in my heart.
All warmed up for the main act then, I think so!
Winnebago had a high standard to follow to keep the smell of sweat escalating.
Anyone who knows anything about this band knows this shouldn't have been a problem.
The energy that the two Bens generate on stage makes you exhausted just watching.
By now there was somewhere in the order of 400 people watching.
The set was characterised by a guitar so heavily distorted, it could have bled on stage.
While the beat of the drums felt like it was inside your skull rather than out.
The crowd reaction was a mixed one. Clearly some had been expecting a more commercial outfit whilst the hardcore fans really loved it.
To me the singles Manhunt and Whisky Business really stood out but I found it hard to remember the rest the following day.
Having said that these guys topped off an excellent night, possibly the best I've been to in recent times.
Respect should go out to all the Asylum technical staff who produced a near perfect sound with some serious meaty goodness that reverberated around the club.
The one thing that grates on me is why people are so reluctant to stand on the dance floor during the sets.
If the Thrills can come to this venue, play a load of shite and still fill the floor, the world is turning into a very sad place.
Get you arses onto the floor and support some real talent!
Of course, this little gripe doesn't refer to the two guys in the middle of the floor who moshed their arses off during all the sets and for most the DJ sessions too. Damn you guys must have been tired!

The night started off with considerable excitement, everyone at college had been buzzing for weeks, and the promo posters had been up at uni and college and handed out in town to mini-moshers et al.
The line up included two local bands; Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt, and a signed band I'd not heard of before.
During the sound checks we

Million Dead, The Freaks Union and Silence In The Streets At the Welly - 27th April 04 By Dom (plus Gallery)

Tonight's show was put on and promoted by the WellyClub. They really surpassed themselves promoting this show, I can't remember ever being at a show as full as
this in Hull.
There were well over 300 people attending and due to the size of the venue it was the perfect amount. I haven't been into the big room since it's been

Music Reviews - Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. By Brian
The bottom line; Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band.
They don't claim to be anything else. Don't want to be anything else.
Off stage, Cal, Danny and Gaz are pleasant enough young men, on stage however, they seem to transform, Hyde-like, into aggressive noise merchants, peddling their own brand of punk.

Having seen countless posters around, and, with a very eager, expectant, and sizeable queue, for this Smash it Up show

Opening act Displacements, made an excellent job of getting proceedings into gear.
They appeared to have a large fan base there to support them with

Antiproduct is the coolest and most exhilarating punk band since The Sex Pistols.
Stopping at nothing to put on the most entertaining show possible at every gig they play, this wacky quintet might be based in London, but they make it known loud-and-clear that they prefer
