Winnebago Deal, Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt
At Full Metal Jacket, The Asylum, Hull Student Union -
30th April 04 By Adam Kilsby

Friday 30th April saw Asylum's monthly rock night, Full Metal Jacket, ending its most successful year in style.

As well as the usual musical mayhem that can be found on the night, as a special treat the organisers laid on three bands.

First up were Brassik Lynt. Due to the early stage time Asylum was still pretty empty.
This didn't dampen the enthusiasm of Barton's finest young hopefuls, and they played a tight, flawless set with a gusto typically reserved for crowds of 10 times that number.

A rousing cover of Killing In The Name Of had the ever increasing crowd dancing merrily, and all too soon it was over.

Next up were the Stalwarts of Hull's heavy metal scene, Killer of Saints.
Although they've spent far too long in the shadow of more established local bands like Dumpvalve, this performance showed that they can more than hold their own onstage.

Despite a hiatus of a couple of months, as well as losing a drummer, there was no sign of rustiness or nerves in their set.

Hutch's unusually loud vocals backed up by some badass double headed riffing and clinical drumming went down very well with the receptive crowd.
A head-up with Adam from Brassik Lynt completed a tight set in fine style, and should have silenced any critics sat in the crowd that night.

As good as the support bands were, the real show stoppers were the headliners, Winnebago Deal.

As you'd expect from a band that have spent pretty much the last 18 months on the road, WD were tighter than a ducks ass and half as pretty.
Looks aside, what Winnebago Deal do well though is play raw, unpretentious, apolitical rock music.

Obviously there are bound to be comparisons with the White Stripes; there are indeed just two of them, but that's as far as the similarities can go.

Imagine what the White Stripes would sound like when Jack was kicking the shit out of Jason Stollsteimer, with Dave Grohl holding him down...you'll be getting close to the ferocity and emotion and ability shown onstage by these two.

Favourites such as Manhunt, Whiskey Business and George Dickel were welcomed by half of Asylums 350 punters, whilst the others politely sought shelter from the sonic onslaught at the bar, too captivated to leave.
Having played one of the most intense 40 odd minutes you're ever likely to see, the two Ben's left the stage in a sea of sweat feedfback and distortion.

Like true geniuses they were largely misunderstood on the night.

However, leaving 350 people looking like they'd been kicked in the head and thinking what the fuck was that?! is no mean feat. Shear brilliance!

I must admit I've been looking forward to this gig for ages. The chance to see 3 up and coming metal bands in one night was gonna provide some serious relief from exam stress and if it didn't the alcohol is cheap enough to fill any void. However, anyone would went would know that this was a night to remember. First up were Read more...

Music Reviews- Winnebago Deal, Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt At Full Metal Jacket, The Asylum, Hull Student Union - 30th April 04 By Chris Jarratt (Full Galleries).
The night started off with considerable excitement, everyone at college had been buzzing for weeks, and the promo posters had been up at uni and college and handed out in town to mini-moshers et al. The line up included two local bands; Killer of Saints and Brassik Lynt, and a signed band I'd not heard of before. During the sound checks we Read more...

Music Reviews - Million Dead, The Freaks Union and Silence In The Streets At the Welly - 27th April 04 By Dom (plus Gallery)
Tonight's show was put on and promoted by the WellyClub. They really surpassed themselves promoting this show, I can't remember ever being at a show as full as this in Hull. There were well over 300 people attending and due to the size of the venue it was the perfect amount. I haven't been into the big room since it's been Read more...

Music Reviews - Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. By Brian
The bottom line; Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. They don't claim to be anything else. Don't want to be anything else. Off stage, Cal, Danny and Gaz are pleasant enough young men, on stage however, they seem to transform, Hyde-like, into aggressive noise merchants, peddling their own brand of punk. Read more...

Music Reviews - 4Ft Fingers / Tiny Elvis / Flatline / Displacements The Adelphi, Wed 21st April By Dick Spring
Having seen countless posters around, and, with a very eager, expectant, and sizeable queue, for this Smash it Up show featuring one of the big hitters of the current UK punk scene 4 Ft Fingers. Opening act Displacements, made an excellent job of getting proceedings into gear. They appeared to have a large fan base there to support them with Read more...

Music Reviews- Electric Eel Shock & Antiproduct at The Kazbah, Scarborough 25th March 04 By Steve Rudd
Antiproduct is the coolest and most exhilarating punk band since The Sex Pistols. Stopping at nothing to put on the most entertaining show possible at every gig they play, this wacky quintet might be based in London, but they make it known loud-and-clear that they prefer Read more...
