The Babyshambles - Saturday 14th August at YoYo Indie Night At The Welly Club, Hull
By Andy Coe
|
All week the only talking point in the city was - Is Pete gonna turn up? And turn up he did!
Last night (Saturday 14th August) at The Yo-Yo indie night in Hull at The Welly Club a sell
out crowd witnessed The greatest Rock n Roll show the city has ever seen.
Fans were camped outside The Welly Club from dawn awaiting the estranged Libertines front man's arrival.
Doors at eight or when I asked the promoter what time are doors opening When I know Pete is in the Hotel!
|
|
|
At twenty past we were in. Support came from local outfits The Morphines and Alan McGee's new signings The Paddingtons.
During their set Mr Docherty appeared at the side of the stage, later claiming The Paddingtons are f***ing brilliant.
The best I've seen them play.
Docherty's appearance during their set sent an air of excitement and relief around the gig. He's here, Pete's here.
|
|
In the dressing room Pete was asked by DJ Priya What stuff do you want playing before you come on?
A simple reply came, The Smiths. Just The Smiths and No Libertines.
|
And at 11.25pm Bigmouth Strikes Again belts out over the PA, followed by a massive crowd surge and chants of
Pete, Pete, Pete.
Appearing from the swell of steaming bodies, Mr Docherty is squeezed on to the stage by fans and security.
The welcome from the hungry Hull crowd was one of adoration.
|
|
Hello, Hull; The Babyshambles rhythm section and guitarist looked surprisingly clean cut, with a
wicked female drummer making a great addition to the band. Pete let out a scream, the crowd thought Up the Bracket,
but the night before Can't Stand Me Now entered the UK charts at number two, the scream was as near as
we got to any Libertines songs tonight. Ten Babyshambles penned songs which the crowd seemed to know word for word.
The security looked on bemused as one after another, the crowd surfed over the barriers.
At several points Docherty invited the whole crowd to join him. If you love me, come and join me.
I've come all this way. You can come five meters! Chaos ensued.
At least fifty or sixty clambered onto the stage and Pete loved them and their embraces.
|
|
Amazingly the show went on. With members of The Paddingtons guarding the drum kit in what was
the greatest Rock 'n' Roll show the city has seen.
A set list lay on the floor. Sadly the stage invasion prevented song number eleven,
For Lovers; Docherty's most successful solo outing to date with help from Wolfman.
And over the howl of reverbing guitars and screams, Cheers, Hull, are Pete's closing words.
And he then dived into the joyful crowd who gently sent him on his way.
This show will be remembered by all who witnessed it for years to come. God bless Mr Docherty.

Whilst stuck at traffic lights in Witham ( Hull ) I heard a wonderful sound. No, not Dale Winton
announcing my lottery numbers but something almost as good. Rock music in Hull !!!.
I pinched myself and it hurt. I then saw a poster on the old pub on

Music Reviews - HarriWatts Band Comin' Out Party At The Lamp Wednesday 4th August By Jane Foster
|
|
This is the first time I've really seen the Harri Watts band properly.
I did in theory see them at the Lamp once before, at the Cracktown Christmas Carol last year.
But that was after several flagons of fine ale and much good cheer, with a bit of
rubber chicken abuse thrown in.
A perfect night in my book,

Music Reviews - Sons of the Desert at the Nagshead Friday 30th July By Jane Foster
|
|
Sons of the Desert are a 9-piece soul covers band who have been dishing
out their fine meaty goods to the people of 'ull for roundabout a decade..give or take
a few changes in their line-up over the years.
Last time I saw them was last Christmas at the selfsame pub, and I thought they were
rather grand then, so I

Jaz Bar 10th August 2004 The Ludes, The Mardous, 59 Violets, The Applewhites By Andy Dykes
|
|
The classy setting of the Old Town's Jaz Bar plays unlikely host to a range of bands tonight. The wooden floors and high concrete ceilings make Jaz Bar an unusual choice for this evening's entertainment. Combined with an absence of carpets, cushions on chairs and curtains on windows and I get the feeling that there are going to be a

Music Reviews - CrackTown, Purple Organ & Blue Sand at The Adelphi Saturday 24th July By Michelle Dee

I am lucky to count King Rat and the Silver Fox as friends, so you can imagine my surprise and
delight when upon entering the Adelphi on a rainy summer night, I heard the familiar
sound of Foxy's harmonica emanating from within.
I had no idea they were on tonight's eclectic line up.

Forget Glastonbury, Reading and T in the Park, this years annual
Nigefest, a tribute to Hull promoter Nigel Holmes birthday, was in full swing as my Lady and I
wandered into the Ringside Pub on Wednesday evening.
It didn't take long to spot Nigel, who, as Sheffield Metal band Headup were beating

I arrive early (ish) at The Welly tonight, but still have to queue quite far back.
By the time I reach the door, the line behind me is about to snake round the side of the club.
I've got a feeling tonight is going to be busy. But then why wouldn't it be?
