Har Mar Superstar Salako The Paddingtons

Har Mar Superstar opens with Transit, the first track on his new album, The Handler. A slick, funky number, it's a great start to what proves to be a great set. From the off, the crowd are boogying and grooving, loving every minute.

At the start of the second song, Back the Camel Up Har Mar is signing autographs for people at the front. It's a nice touch and shows just why he's so popular. The song itself is a crazy affair. Har Mar raps his way through most of it, and I have to wonder what in the world he's going on about.

By track three, he's lost his shirt and is gyrating like the sweaty love god he's famed to be. It becomes clear that aside from the great stage performance, Har Mar Superstar is an excellent musician.
His voice is strong, powerful and soulful, and he's got a really great range. He announces new song Sugar Pie as for the ladies and performs it like the 80s love machine pop cliché you'd expect. And the ladies love it.

Har Mar classic Brothers and Sisters is the highlight of the set, played out like The Artist Formerly Known As Prince beating Scissor Sisters with the Jackson 5 funky stick, shooting infectious party vibes all over the room. It rocks.
The only fault I can find is that Har Mar Superstar performs over a backing track. This is none more evident than in Brothers and Sisters when the drummer stands up and waves at the crowd during the drum solo. It's a little tacky and detracts a bit from the live experience.

The encore ends with fan favourite EZ Pass. It's hip, groovy and catchy. Frankly, it's very Har Mar Superstar. The house goes wild, and the band leave the stage, Hr Mar blowing kisses and waving as he walks.
Most of tonight's set is comprised of material from Har Mar Superstar's new album The Handler which is out on September 6. Though it's new listening, the audience responds brilliantly, which I guess is all you can do to music from what Har Mar himself dubs, the most rock 'n' roll r&b album ever.

And by the sound of things, it's going to be a great record. Big thanks to The Welly for another great Sweet 'n' Sour night. The night's attracting some great acts to Hull, while showcasing a load of home-grown talent as well. If you haven't been already, I suggest you get on the bandwagon and check it out.

Band Interviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 22/07/2004 Mad Action Interview By Andy Dykes
After the show I go backstage. Admittedly it's partly to use the toilet, but also to catch up with the bands, particularly Mad Action, with whom an interview has been arranged. The lead singer and guitarist/backing-vocalist from Kasabian are immediately welcoming, allowing me to use their toilet without fear of violence or harassment. Read more...

Music Reviews - Kasabian,Mad Action,The Landaus The Wellington Thursday 22nd July By Lee Atkinson
After a successful and highly entertaining launch party featuring Turismo, I was interested to see what Sweet-n-Sour could offer in the way of showcasing bigger, signed acts. On tonights billing, headliners Kasabian, fresh from a successful Glastonbury appearance and increasing media attention, Read more...

Music Reviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 22/07/2004 Kasabian, Mad Action, The Landaus By Andy Dykes
Outside the Welly Club tonight there's thunder, lightning and heavy rain. The bouncers pass umbrellas down the queue so that the line of punters waiting to get in can stay as dry as possible. I'm told that there aren't as many people here as last week. This is only the second time that the Welly has put on its Sweet n Sour night, and Read more...

Music Reviews - Sweet 'n' Sour at the Welly Club 15th July
By Michelle Dee
What a night! Live music from The Applewhites followed by Turismo. Then dancing into the wee small hours to blinding tunes with a packed dance floor. Apologies to The Applewhites, I was at the Adelphi whilst you were on. I am reliably informed by Sweet Assassin, that you rocked. Turismo looked great on stage Read more...

Music Reviews - Jesse Malin - York Fibbers 10/07/04
By Nick Quantrill
I have to admit it, I'm biased. Jesse Malin rules and I won't have a word said against him. Like most people I discovered Jesse's music through his association with Ryan Adams. After numerous years plodding along with quite frankly, bad to mediocre punk bands, best mate Ryan produced and provided Read more...

Band Gig Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie at The Cavern - Saturday 3rd July By Andy Steele
Blind Frog Ernie, in their current guise, were supposed to make their Cavern debut some months ago but had to cancel at the last minute due to illness. Tonight it was clear from the off that they were determined to banish the memory of that missed opportunity and give the place a proper rocking, East-coast style. Read more...

Music Reviews - Fraction of The Cost & The Trailers - The Ringside Wednesday 21st July 2004 By Dick Spring
Walking into Ringside tonight, you could see how the reputation of the place is growing rapidly, as it was bustling with people. Various faces were dotted around the place with members of Die For, Le Shed, and Freaks Union in evidence. Opening up tonight's gig were Bridlington three piece, The Trailers - although Read more...
