Next up are Le Shed. They open with a slap bass funk vibe that reeks of Red Hot Chili Peppers. And then the frontman starts to howl like a beast. It's a startling scream and Le Shed transform from Chili Peppers copyists to funk metal pioneers in the blink of an eye. It's pretty impressive, and pretty exhilarating.

The funk element is incredibly funky, due largely to the quite awe inspiring abilities of the bassist. And the metal element is incendiary, due in no small part to the versatility of the singer's voice, which drags a satisfyingly cathartic scream from his lungs.
On the whole, the musicianship is very accomplished and all of the songs are as clever and subtle as they are brutal. On stage, the action makes for great watching, with the whole band obviously very into what they are doing. It's a great performance to a truly impressive soundtrack.

Tonight's headliners Blind Frog Ernie begin their set with an intro tape of Spīnal Tap's Stonehenge and straight away I love them. I know that I love them because I'm smiling. Then it all gets a little weird. And then they begin. And I'm still none the wiser.
Blind Frog Ernie sound like a stripped down Iron Maiden. While it's something they do well, it's not something that makes for particularly good viewing given the lack of spandex and pyrotechnics. However, like I said, they do what they do well, with a real sheen and tightness to their sound.

The musicianship and song writing are both very sound, but there's something about this band that doesn't quite add up. Maybe it's the singer's short blonde hair and youthful appearance, coupled with the fact that he sounds inescapably like Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame.
And disappointingly, I find myself stuck with the fact that my difficulty in appreciating this band stems from the fact that they look nothing like they sound. If I shut my eyes and use my imagination, it's great. But that's not what coming to a gig is all about.

But that's my fault.

Blind Frog Ernie are a fine, fine band. They just sound like a ten-piece who wear a lot of leather; not a four-piece in t-shirts and jeans.

Music Reviews - Kasabian,Mad Action,The Landaus The Wellington Thursday 22nd July By Lee Atkinson
After a successful and highly entertaining launch party featuring Turismo, I was interested to see what Sweet-n-Sour could offer in the way of showcasing bigger, signed acts. On tonights billing, headliners Kasabian, fresh from a successful Glastonbury appearance and increasing media attention, Read more...

Music Reviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 22/07/2004 Kasabian, Mad Action, The Landaus By Andy Dykes
Outside the Welly Club tonight there's thunder, lightning and heavy rain. The bouncers pass umbrellas down the queue so that the line of punters waiting to get in can stay as dry as possible. I'm told that there aren't as many people here as last week. This is only the second time that the Welly has put on its Sweet n Sour night, and Read more...

Music Reviews - Sweet 'n' Sour at the Welly Club 15th July
By Michelle Dee
What a night! Live music from The Applewhites followed by Turismo. Then dancing into the wee small hours to blinding tunes with a packed dance floor. Apologies to The Applewhites, I was at the Adelphi whilst you were on. I am reliably informed by Sweet Assassin, that you rocked. Turismo looked great on stage Read more...

Music Reviews - Jesse Malin - York Fibbers 10/07/04
By Nick Quantrill
I have to admit it, I'm biased. Jesse Malin rules and I won't have a word said against him. Like most people I discovered Jesse's music through his association with Ryan Adams. After numerous years plodding along with quite frankly, bad to mediocre punk bands, best mate Ryan produced and provided Read more...

Music Reviews - Payola and Malibu Stacey at The Springhead Sunday 11th July By Dick Spring
ROCK'N'ROLL!!!!!!!!! Bring it on. This is what gigs are about; the like of which we haven't seen for many a long year and in a proper little rock 'n' roll venue. The Springhead, not known for being a hotbed of originality, despite being an excellent place to see live music, has stuck it's neck out and booked a fast rising UK rock band Read more...

Music Reviews - Le Shed at The Ringside - Wednesday 30th June By Dick Spring
It's been a while since we've had a band in Hull to fill the void left by DumpValve, since they took a heavier more thrashy direction. Well, now such a band exists in the Form of Le Shed, who many will have seen gigging like mad round Hull in recent months, building up a healthy profile. And now it was the turn of The Ringside to host them Read more...

Music Reviews - Eleanor McEvoy and Ade Webb Adelphi 6th July By Michelle Dee
I was very keen to go to this gig to see the leading lady of Irish folk, as she was billed, to see whether she lived up to that accolade. Simon the keyboard player from the highly acclaimed band cowfisH accompanied me I had hoped to avail myself of his extensive folk music knowledge. I digress.. Eleanor McEvoy was being supported Read more...

Music Reviews - Windum Earl Wednesday 7th July Ringside, Beverley Road, Hull By Daniel Laney
It's been a while since my last review so I was more than delighted to write about a band I have never seen before. To me Wednesday's have always sucked in a huge way since someone decided to close down Room. Television on Wednesday is mind numbing (when is it ever good)? And everyone now seems to enjoy going to the Read more...

Music Reviews - Break Even - A Local Band Bio -
Plus Gig Dates
Break Even is a 4 piece rock 'n' roll band based in Hull, East Yorkshire. Our music lies closer to the garage rock scene but we do not like to categorise our music into any specific group, as our main concentration is on the song writing. The band was formed in January 2003 and we have been gigging since January Read more...
