Blind Frog Ernie, Le Shed, Shindigg, Killer of Saints, Displacements
at the Piper Club Tuesday 7th September 2004
By Andy Dykes

I walk through the door of The Piper tonight, straight into a wall of sound
created by three guys who look and sound like a very early Blink 182.
This band is Displacements.
It's hard to figure out exactly what's going on until they introduce a little subtlety.
And then it all starts to sound pretty good.
Vocally, neither singer is particularly gifted.
However, given their punk styling and youthful exuberance, this defect makes Displacements
come across as possibly more punk than if their setup had been graced
with the talents of a vocalist of musical credibility.

|
|
Next band up, Killer of Saints have more hair than..a field of highland cattle.
Immediately they start rocking out to some killer riffs and pretty impressive musicianship.
But it takes a little while before the sound desk gets the measure of the vocals.
Initially, they jump out of the mix a bit too much, but after a couple of songs, they fit right in.
And Killer of Saints show themselves to be a more than proficient band.
|
|
I wouldn't like to pigeonhole them as either a metal or a rock band.
At times they sound a little like Alice in Chains, sometimes like Deftones,
but always with an undercurrent of Metallica. Particularly at solo time.
|
|
On the whole, I'm pretty impressed. At times it sounds pretty apocalyptic.
Oh, and the drummer always has his tongue sticking out; which I think is a nice touch.
This is the first time I've seen Shindigg since they emerged victorious from
2004s Best Original Band competition. And man, I'm impressed. Really.
|
|
|
Dynamic and rhythmic sensibilities aside, there's a togetherness about this
band that extends beyond tightness and the fact that the entire band sing along to the words.
It's a great vibe.
|
|
The thing is, I arrived at The Piper tonight prepared to be disappointed.
Off the back of such a success, it's easy for a band to become complacent.
But tonight Shindigg are brilliant.
Their hooks and time signatures make for compelling listening, while the onstage
charisma makes this a band worth watching.
From the constant mincing dance of the bassist, to the assertive self belief of the
singer, that really draws the audience into the performance, Shindigg are a band
who have every aspect of their bandly existence absolutely nailed.
I wish them good things, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they happen.

Music Reviews - HarriWatts Band Comin' Out Party At The Lamp Wednesday 4th August By Jane Foster
|
|
This is the first time I've really seen the Harri Watts band properly.
I did in theory see them at the Lamp once before, at the Cracktown Christmas Carol last year.
But that was after several flagons of fine ale and much good cheer, with a bit of
rubber chicken abuse thrown in.
A perfect night in my book,

Music Reviews - Sons of the Desert at the Nagshead Friday 30th July By Jane Foster
|
|
Sons of the Desert are a 9-piece soul covers band who have been dishing
out their fine meaty goods to the people of 'ull for roundabout a decade..give or take
a few changes in their line-up over the years.
Last time I saw them was last Christmas at the selfsame pub, and I thought they were
rather grand then, so I

Jaz Bar 10th August 2004 The Ludes, The Mardous, 59 Violets, The Applewhites By Andy Dykes
|
|
The classy setting of the Old Town's Jaz Bar plays unlikely host to a range of bands tonight. The wooden floors and high concrete ceilings make Jaz Bar an unusual choice for this evening's entertainment. Combined with an absence of carpets, cushions on chairs and curtains on windows and I get the feeling that there are going to be a
