Jaz Bar 10th August 2004 The Ludes, The Mardous, 59 Violets, The Applewhites continued
By Andy Dykes

prev page
|
Tonight's headliners The Ludes have also travelled up from London for tonight's show. As a 5-piece, they pack out the stage so that it looks busier than the dancefloor in front. And then they begin.
They look a little like The Ramones and sound absolutely brilliant.
The basic premise of their sound is garage rock, with tinny guitars and unashamedly scrappy sound,
but they take the concept to a different place.
|
|
|
They jam, which is something I've never heard a garage rock band do, and despite their deliberately messy show, they somehow sound incredibly tight.
|
|
Onstage, The Ludes put on an incredibly visceral performance, the frontman thrashing around and gesturing to the audience like some kind of crazy rock shaman. The band certainly look the part and up on the stage, they're all having fun and it provides an interesting spectacle.
And all of a sudden, there's an audience. It's as if people have crawled out of the woodwork.
|
|
Drunks off the street are in and trying to dance alongside bemulleted rock chicks. Some of the guys from The Applewhites, 59 Violets and The Mardous are up there stamping away as well. And The Ludes really have taken Jaz Bar from the graveyard. It's impossible not to get into the groove.
|
The Ludes also give their nods to The Strokes and The Libertines,
but they're sound just isn't generic at all.
In their more ska influenced moments, there's a touch of The Clash in there as well.
The Applewhites could learn a lot from these guys.
There are some interesting rhythm changes in there too.
Sometimes I can't quite figure out what's going on, but I put that down to the sound
quality and the ringing in my ears.
|
|
The end of their set is an exciting climax, with the action on stage turning manic and the singer preaching his lyrics over the barrier in front of him. Then the lights come on, he thanks his public and the show is over.
Everyone likes a crazy band - these boys'll go far.

Sweet 'n' Sour at the Welly Club 15th July By Michelle Dee
|
|
What a night! Live music from The Applewhites followed by Turismo.
Then dancing into the wee small hours to blinding tunes with a packed dance floor.
Apologies to The Applewhites, I was at the Adelphi whilst you were on.
I am reliably informed by Sweet Assassin, that you rocked.
Turismo looked great on stage

Jesse Malin - York Fibbers 10/07/04 By Nick Quantrill
|
|
I have to admit it, I'm biased. Jesse Malin rules and I won't have a
word said against him.
Like most people I discovered Jesse's music through his association with
Ryan Adams.
After numerous years plodding along with quite frankly,
bad to mediocre punk bands, best mate Ryan produced and provided

Blind Frog Ernie at The Cavern - Saturday 3rd July By Andy Steele
|
|
Blind Frog Ernie, in their current guise, were supposed to make their Cavern
debut some months ago but had to cancel at the last minute due to illness.
Tonight it was clear from the off that they were determined to banish the memory of that
missed opportunity and give the place a proper rocking, East-coast style.

Walking into Ringside tonight, you could see how the reputation of the

Music Reviews - Dead or American - Band Bio
|
|
In accordance with the prophecy, Dead or American came into being at the stroke
of midnight on the 31st December, 1999 - the result of numerous failed musical ventures.
Following the departure of founder-member Greg Heuer in 2003 after he realised there was
more to life than this rock n roll pish.
Various bassist were drafted in

Band Interviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 22/07/2004 Mad Action Interview By Andy Dykes
|
|
After the show I go backstage. Admittedly it's partly to use the toilet, but also to catch up
with the bands, particularly Mad Action, with whom an interview has been arranged.
The lead singer and guitarist/backing-vocalist from Kasabian are immediately welcoming,
allowing me to use their toilet without fear of violence or harassment.

Music Reviews - Twice the riot, Die for, Flatline, Tear Jerk and Steel Rules Die @ the Adelphi, 27th June By John Pearman
|
|
I wasn't planning on going to the Adelphi tonight.
You see, I don't really like punk music and it's quite a well known fact amongst my friends.
So why the hell did they turn up at my door and ask me to come? I have no idea.
But upon contradictory insight into the bill as to whether Freak's Union was to play or not,
I decided that the night

Music Reviews- Bryan Adams, Proud Mary and Sketcher at the KC Stadium, Hull Saturday 26th June 04 By Steve Rudd
|
|
St. Helens-based quartet Sketcher were something of a bizarre choice for the first support act
of the night, playing a damn fine brand of pop-punk music.
Still, they did what they were in a sense expected to do, and warmed-up the crowd to a
fantastic degree, with audience participation paramount (even if the extent of

Displacements and Lord Bishop Rocks at The Ringside, 23rd June By Dick Spring
|
|
If ever an act has ever been more aptly named, I don't know, but whatever, tonight's
opening slot was a special guest, short notice appearance.
Lord Bishop is a giant of a man, but rocks like a b**tard. A cool black dude, from
New York (though he is huge in Europe with near constant touring) is making a name
for himself in Blighty
