Access to Music End of Term Bash At the New Adelphi Club, Hull 22nd June 2004
By Jeff Parsons
|
next page
|
The latest in a long line of Access to Music showcase gigs took place at its resident venue,
the Adelphi, on Tuesday 22nd June, featuring the now customary eclectic mix of artists and styles.
Access to Music is the country's top provider of popular music courses, running a variety of
programmes at locations from Portsmouth to York, in partnership with local colleges or in its own right.
|
|
|
In Hull, the Contemporary Popular Music Course (CPM), and its sister course, Creating Music Through
Technology (CMTT), are provided by the East Riding College and offer an Open College Network Level
3 Accreditation which can open University doors, and give learners a thorough grounding in
Instrumental Skills, Music Technology, Composition, History of Contemporary Music, and Performance Skills.
|
Tuesday's gig featured learners (and an occasional tutor!) from the CPM course, which runs in two
stages (3a and 3b) at the Lowgate Centre, Lowgate Hull (just up the road from Hull College).
The evening kicked off in fine style with Nick Minns, a drummer by trade, but recently reborn
as a singer/songwriter.
Nick's inspiration comes from many areas, but I think it's safe to say that his girlfriend
is his main Muse at the moment, and Nick's songs are suffused with the kind of joy that
comes only from the blissfully happy.
|
|
|
Watching Nick perform, it's hard to believe that
this is only his fifth gig as a solo artist.
He radiates confidence, and talks to the audience in a completely relaxed way, diffusing any
tension with his easy banter.
His vocal and guitar skills are developing week by week, and
although Eric Clapton needn't be concerned (yet!) his self-accompaniment is entirely
sympathetic to his vocal stylings. Nick has a naturally appealing voice, well-pitched
and tonally pure, yet conveys emotion in a way which belies his tender years.
|
Next up are two performance bands, in other words, bands containing people who are
keen to specialise in performance, as opposed to Technology in Music.
The first one is christened, just for this evening, Einstein's Theory of Relativity, and
comprises Sam Webb (bass and vocals), Andy Crookes, (drums) Bob Stephenson (guitar and bass),
and CPM Course Leader Jeff Parsons (ex of Hull legends Dead Fingers Talk), on guitar and vocals.
|
|
|
This band plays a wildly varied programme, encompassing emo (Finch), heavy metal (Black Sabbath),
AOR (Fleetwood Mac), and classic rock (The Who), and as well as showcasing the obvious talents
of the three learners, also allows Jeff Parsons to show off some of his tried and tested stage
moves (such as playing behind his head).
Nick Minns guests on backing vocals, as well as a
friend of Sam's, the singer from Blind Frog Ernie.
|
|
The second performance band also features Jeff, in place of the indisposed Darren Fearis,
alongside drummer Nick Minns, (making the third of four appearances tonight!), bass player
Steve Embley, guitarist Diane Boston, and vocalist Leah Smith,
who is well-known on the
local pub and club circuit as well as being the frontwoman in local band Komplicated.

Million Dead, The Freaks Union and Silence In The Streets At the Welly - 27th April 04 By Dom (plus Gallery)
|
|
Tonight's show was put on and promoted by the WellyClub. They really surpassed themselves promoting this show, I can't remember ever being at a show as full as
this in Hull.
There were well over 300 people attending and due to the size of the venue it was the perfect amount. I haven't been into the big room since it's been

Music Reviews - Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. By Brian
|
|
The bottom line; Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band.
They don't claim to be anything else. Don't want to be anything else.
Off stage, Cal, Danny and Gaz are pleasant enough young men, on stage however, they seem to transform, Hyde-like, into aggressive noise merchants, peddling their own brand of punk.

Music Reviews- The Levellers, The Mutts & 59 Violets at Hull City Hall - 29th March 04 By Steve Rudd
|
|
The Levellers have to be applauded for consistently inviting some brilliant bands to support them on tour.
Back in December 2003, Brighton rockabilly outfit She Said did the honours brilliantly, and this time around - for their 14-date, Anti-Apathy UK Spring 2004 tour

Million Dead, X is Loaded, yourcodenameis:milo at Fibbers By Steve Rudd
|

As the April rains raged outside, so did Newcastle quintet yourcodenameis:milo on the inside.
Strange name, you might think.. and they're an even stranger band, proudly presenting the sound of sheer carnage as three guitarists manhandle all manner of destructive and

Brave, Blind Frog Ernie, Silence In The Streets, Dumpvalve The Welly - Tue 20th April KERRANG Show! By Felix Green
|
|
Downstairs in the main ballroom of the Welly Club is always a difficult room to fill, since it is far larger in comparison to the other rock venues in Hull.
Yet with four weeks of Kerrang promotion and some wide spread flyering it was as full as I've ever seen it.
Also, praises to the sound guys who

Music Reviews - The Displacements By Steve
|
|
Displacements are a remarkable new band based in Hull.
Chris (Gowie), Simon (Burner) and Nick are only just turned 18 yet their unique brand of music is rapidly attracting a loyal following.
Remarkable because guitarists and vocalists Simon and Nick are self taught through spending hours in front of a PC logged on to the web whilst Gowie has been playing

Music Reviews - 4Ft Fingers / Tiny Elvis / Flatline / Displacements The Adelphi, Wed 21st April By Dick Spring

Having seen countless posters around, and, with a very eager, expectant, and sizeable queue, for this Smash it Up show
featuring one of the big hitters of the current UK punk scene 4 Ft Fingers.
Opening act Displacements, made an excellent job of getting proceedings into gear.
They appeared to have a large fan base there to support them with

Music Reviews - Adelphi, Hull, 18th April
Jaws drop in Hull and appreciation for local bands rise.

Crowbar Smile, DUMPVALVE, Mad Crowd Disease, Multiple Injuries, Planet 10
It's cold, it's wet and it's miserable. Now there are two things I could do on this gloomy Sunday afternoon in April.
Number one; I could stay at home in a lovely quiet village, pondering how I've become so overdrawn and kick myself when I figure out the reason.
Or,
