CD Reviews - Blue Sand - Changed Names and Slaves EP
By Michelle Dee
|
|
I was given the enigmatically titled Blue Sand EP and after a couple of hearings I was hooked.
Blue Sand have played the Linnet and Lark on Princes Avenue and the newly refurbished Ringside venue in recent weeks.
The title track has a touch of early Placebo about it.
Lively guitar and driving drums make you sit up and listen from the start.
|
|
You and Heaven contains storytelling lyrics that you can hear, clear as a bell.
|
A catchy tune, that at times reminded me of the Swedish group, The Wannadies.
Bleed Myself continues in a similar vein (pardon the pun!) with sweet guitars and gorgeous base.
Kenny Other is next and it is a fantastic sing-along tune.
The quality of the vocals is to die for, the kind of song that makes you want to bounce out of bed on a bright summer morning.
Feel good, really good with this one!
|
|
|
Save Me is more of the same; a strong song with great lyrics. You wonder how they can better the previous 5 tracks, but somehow they manage it.
Let It Rain is a fantastic sprawling epic of a song that scales the heights of passion and precipitation! Powerful and moving vocals - and violins, too!
You can't go far wrong with a good crescendo of violins.
This is a great value EP at any price, with no track less than 3 and a half minutes.
|
Some real moments of musical brilliance.
An EP that will grow and grow on you, till you start singing Let It Rain or You and Heaven in Tesco on a Saturday afternoon.
|
Talking about Saturday, catch Blue Sand at the Adelphi on Saturday 24th April where they will be showcasing their considerable talent.
It will be my first chance to see them play live and I can't wait!
Blue Sand are:
Gary Richardson - Lead Vocals and guitar
Alan Ratcliffe - Vocals and guitar
Ellena Richardson - Bass

Album Reviews - Cracktown - Songs in the Key of Fuck Off
(Pure West) By Steve Rudd - With the Knighthood Video!
|
|
This gloriously outspoken Hull-based outfit revolves around the musical and lyrical talents of, err.. Silver Fox and King Rat?!?!!!!!
Mmm - so says the CD cover!
I don't honestly know why the two guys who shield their identities under the murky guise of Cracktown don't want their

Album Reviews - Ricky - The Summer Sun Still Echoes
By Nick Quantrill
|
|
Why exactly is there a review of a band from Portsmouth on a website about Hull you're probably thinking?
I could talk about the similarities between the two cities as a reason, well, the naval traditions of them.
I think I still feel deprived that my only school trip whilst at Hull Trinity House was a rather tedious

Album Reviews - The Uncle Devil Show - A Terrible Beauty (P3 Music)
By Steve Rudd
|
|
The Uncle Devil Show is actually a trio of very experienced and hugely respected musicians, all three of them Scottish.
Just like ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has recently emerged from the dark with an identity crisis on his part to play in the
Cocker-disguised Relaxed Muscle incarnation, ex-Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie is one of the prime components of this new band (who's now ominously known as Jason Barr), who's

Album Reviews - Todd Rundgren - Liars (Sanctuary Records)
By Steve Rudd
|
|
All of these songs are about a paucity of truth. At first they may seem to be about other things, but that is just a reflection of how much dishonesty we have accepted in our daily lives.
We are raised from birth to believe things that cannot be proven or that are plainly not true.
People will often brag of their honesty, when there is so much they have simply chosen to ignore or leave

Music Reviews-
Electric Eel Shock & Antiproduct at The Kazbah, Scarborough 25th March 04 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Antiproduct is the coolest and most exhilarating punk band since The Sex Pistols.
Stopping at nothing to put on the most entertaining show possible at every gig they play, this wacky quintet might be based in London, but they make it known loud-and-clear that they prefer

Music Reviews - Adelphi, Hull, 18th April
Jaws drop in Hull and appreciation for local bands rise.
By Mike Rofone

|
Crowbar Smile, DUMPVALVE, Mad Crowd Disease, Multiple Injuries, Planet 10
It's cold, it's wet and it's miserable. Now there are two things I could do on this gloomy Sunday afternoon in April.
Number one; I could stay at home in a lovely quiet village, pondering how I've become so overdrawn and kick myself when I figure out the reason.
Or,

Multiple Injuries at The Ringside, Hull - Wednesday 14th April 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
This venue is a new addition to the Hull circuit, and I was informed that the booking is in the very capable hands of Determination Inc (who were the driving force behind, the late, lamented, Moriarty's ) and are bringing the magic touch to this venue, with a newly installed 2k PA system.
The new Wednesday night

Music Reviews-
Jesse James / Fraction of the Cost / The Trailers
The Adelphi, Thur 15th April 2004 By Mike Rofone.
|
|
Entering the Adelphi Club and hearing a band completing their sound check is never an unusual thing.
To be quite honest it's welcoming, like an appetiser it gets your taste buds going making you anxious to try the first course.
As usual, the Adelphi is always welcoming, its timeless décor and stale smells of spilt booze and stubbed out cigarettes

Music Reviews-
Jesse James / Fraction of the Cost / The Trailers
The Adelphi, Thur 15th April 2004 By Dick Spring
|
|
Smash it Up teamed up with the Adelphi to bring the self styled Punk Soul Brothers Jesse James back to the Adelphi.
Yet another busy night, as always when Jesse James swing into town. First up were three piece pop punk band THE TRAILERS from Bridlington, and contrary to reports about them being dreadfully bad, I can report

Misic Reviews - The Bivouac - Duke of Wellington, Lincoln - Friday 9th April By Sue Watson
|
|
Featuring DumpValve, Mad Crowd Disease, Faith in Chaos and Ringworm
This promised to be an interesting night, as I had only seen 2 of the bands before and had never visited the Bivouac before.
We arrived early and witnessed a very rare thing - a proper sound check.
The guy who runs the place, Steve Hawkins had
