Marlowe - Popularity Gel (single/ Probe Plus) By Steve Rudd

With no fewer than eight band members involved, Marlowe songwriter and assumed ringleader is a brave man by the name of Simon Bradshaw, who shares the vocal duties with Chloe Mullett's sensual voice. John Peel is alleged to be a big fan of the band, and their third album is already on the way, so why - one might wonder - have so few people heard of Marlowe until now? Mmm - now that's a question and a third...

Popularity Gel is an extraordinary song, with vibrantly dark guitar hooks playing off blasts of trumpet, flute, sax and cello. The effects are always interesting when brass sections endearingly worm their way into more traditional 'rock' set-ups, but the effect in Marlowe's case is sensational.

B-side Can't Take It All With You, meanwhile, is far removed from the title track, being a beautifully crafted and acoustic-rooted tune, that also features a Country-music flavoured slide guitar and Belle & Sebastian-styled brass brilliance. And, if you like the sound of theirs, you might also want to look out for their A Day In July album from which Popularity Gel is indeed taken. (4/5) www.marlowemusic.co.uk
