Birthday Party with a Difference - February 1st at the Adelphi By Sue Watson

The day didn't start too well. One of the top bands (Shindigg) informed me that their drummer had quit the band and wouldn't be coming (Ouch). Luckily for me the other 3 members have an alter-ego (The Flatmates) and they agreed to open the event. I wondered how the Goths and young punks would take to them, but I was pleasantly surprised and they were very well received.

It is impossible to categorize the Flatmates; they are an acoustic outfit who write their own material. I suppose the nearest I can get is Nirvana meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers with a bit of Sugar Ray thrown in for good measure. Next up were Killer of Saints a sort of heavy emo-influenced rock band. I have had my doubts about them but they proved me wrong and played a 'monster' of a set which went down really well.

Once the third band got going, the place erupted. Mad Crowd Disease are 3 very young men from Lincoln who performed their hearts out. They have been described as a ska-punk band, but whatever you call it the crowd loved it and considering they hadn't played for 2 months before this gig they played a blinder.

I think we will be seeing a lot more of these boys. I have a soft spot for the next band - Silence in the Streets - and enjoy them whenever I hear them. The singer has a charisma and personality that wills you to listen. They write all their own material and perform it with an ease that makes it seem like they've been around forever. I predict great things for this band if they stick at it and don't get disheartened when they feel they have not given their best. Memo to the lads - no one notices, they love you!

What can I say about Dump Valve - they are the most exciting live band I have ever seen and today the crowd agree- the 'mosh pit' was heaving. This is another original band, who write and perform their own brand of (very) heavy rock, and though the first couple of songs were marred by the failure of Steve's brand new remote control mic, once the problem was rectified, they were rocking.

Musically, they are superb, so what if they are loud; the crowds' cheers of appreciation said it all!

Today was my son's birthday so we made it a joint celebration. Steve, the singer from Dump Valve, got him on stage and gave him his present and later threw his birthday cake in to the crowd so they all got a piece! He wants to know what I'm doing for him next year - the mind boggles!!

	I went to see Hull's favourite Madness cover band - Badness- at the Piper club on Newland Ave. They were supported by All Mod Cons, who are a tribute to The Jam. It was a fantastic night.. Music Reviews - Drypool Hulls Best Band By Rob Dolman
	In my opinion, the best band in Hull at the minute is Drypool. I have seen all the rest -Diablo, Turismo, The Raywells, The favours etc. etc. Yawn, Yawn. I mean these bands tout themselves as original. C'mon, some cover bands are more original than this lot. Drypool are tight, musically creative and no two songs sound alike. I really recommend them.. Music Reviews - SIT UP and Listen to Riley by Cilla
	Dave Robertson, Riley song writer has a way with words. You can just hear a ghost of a twang of his Liverpudlian accent come through. Just enough to melt one or two hearts, I suspect. And the tunes?
