Part-Time Festival Organiser Hull Mela

The Hull Mela Steering Group wishes to recruit one project worker to be based at
the DOC Scullybank Project, Beverley Road.
The post is for 12 weeks starting 3rd July 2006, 16 hours per week at £130.35
per week before tax.
Mela is traditionally a Summer Indian Fair.
Such fairs have been adopted in cities and communities throughout Britain
as a cultural celebration.
2004 saw Hull's first Mela, followed by a larger event in West Hull's Pearson Park in July 2005.
This year's Mela is taking place on September 10th. Hull's Mela is a
celebration of diversity, aiming to include arts, music, workshops and food,
representative of Hull's many communities.

The Role of the Mela Festival Organiser: The Mela Festival Organiser will be
accountable to the Mela Steering Group and will work in an empowering way to
ensure that the festival is community led.
The MSG will aim to ensure this, and responsibility for management of accounts and
fundraising will sit with the MSG.
The post holder will hold responsibility for the organising and delivery of the
Mela festival, including booking venues, artists and all associated equipment.
They will also work within health and safety standards, legislation and funding requirements.

The Mela festival organiser will liaise closely with agencies across the
public, private and voluntary sector, as well as representatives from all of
Hull's communities.

This year saw Hull's first ever Mela festival held at Pearson Park. A Mela is a traditional festival which originates from India. A welcome event (especially as there was no Grassroots festival this year), it brought together and celebrated the diverse communities of Hull. It was a successful day, well attended and enjoyed by both the public and the performers.
