Interview - Brain from the Hull Flash Crowd
By Rich Mills
|
|
Rich: Alright Brain, so you've given up trying to take over the world every night with your side-kick Pinky, and have moved into organising Flash Crowds, or Flash Mobs as I understand they are also known?
Brain: Yes, that is correct. The world domination project has taken a back seat for the summer. Pinky and I have decided to take some time out to organise what I call Flash Crowds. The term 'mob' sounds a little too unrefined for my intellectual tastes. Besides the original term is actually Flash Crowd, rather then mob.
Rich: Wasn't the term first used by Larry Niven, to describe a phenomenon that happens in one of his science-fiction stories?
Brain: It is something that envisaged would happen if we ever achieved cheap instant mass travel. He thought that in the event of a major news story or news worthy happening, that huge groups of people would suddenly appear from nowhere… In a flash!
Rich: This has become a global movement within only a few weeks. Do you think that this is a short-lived craze, or a new form of social movement?
Brain: I feel the idea of the Flash Crowd or Flash Mob, is one people can really get into. It is not political, and it's not for or against anything, it just is. These events and happenings, just happen, for no reason in particular. The idea is one of pure fun. Fun for those who take part, being part of something totally new and different, and fun for those who are caught-up in these little whirlwind events as they happen. No one is hurt, no one is up-set, no one is offended… Everyone is a winner, and a good time had by all.
Rich: How does it all work then? How do you become part of a Flash Crowd?
Brain: Simple! You join one of the many email lists, user groups, and websites that have started popping-up all over the web. They are growing at a exponential rate, with new ones appearing all over the world everyday. The best thing to do I feel is to do a little digging around on the web, there will most definitely be a Flash Crowd near to you somewhere. And if there isn't, then just set one up yourself. It's not hard! If a genius mouse and stupid side-kick can do it, then I'm sure a human can manage it too.
Rich: When will the first Flash Crowd gather in Hull then?
Brain: That is yet to be decided, we are considering a number of possible places that would make a good Flash Crowd location, and fun happening. I suggest people get themselves on the site and join the user group. That way we will be able to keep them informed of the little matters of, when, where, and what we will be doing.
Rich: Well thank-you very much for your time Mr. Brain, sir! I hope all goes well for you and Pinky while you are staying in the city of Hull.

Pinky was unavailable for comment at this time. But it is known that Pinky can often be found lurking around the waterfront of Hull in search of unusual cheeses. We are hoping to bring you an interview with Pinky at some time in the very near future, so keep an eye out.

Music Reviews - A Champion Night - Welly Club 16th January By Cilla and Greg
|
|
One cold night in January (actually it was bloody freezing) my mate Greg and I went along to the Welly for a night with Champion Sound, the Reggae and Dancehall magicians who are currently gracing the Hull night club scene with their individual and blistering repertoire.
We arrived early - about 10.15 and the club had a cold feel.
There was a steady trickle of people arriving and after an hour or so, so the music began to build ..

Music Reviews - Pave - Promotional CD by Nick Quantrill
|
|
It's often said that bands use the opportunity of recording as a means of 'capturing the live sound.' What a load of cack! It's an opportunity to sound better than you do live!
Due to the pressures of working far faster than a signed band would be expected to, and in lower quality studios, the recording process must be incredibly difficult for your average Hull band.

Music Reviews - The Landau's - Sweet But True (single/ DAGALOST Records) By Steve Rudd
|
|
Hull's something of a hotbed for cool indie-rock bands, and The Landau's - along with Still Life - are one of the freshest bands forging ahead within such a musical genre.
An exclusively laddish quartet, this is the young band's first major release, and has been recorded at the city's famous Fairview Studios.
The production qualities are fantastic,

Music Reviews - Pave - Linnet and Lark 05 February 2004 by Nick Quantrill
|
|
2004 hasn't been the greatest years so far. It kicked off more than adequately in the Old Town Square of Prague but went rapidly down hill from there.
Returning home I battled unsuccessfully against tonsillitis for a couple of weeks before slipping on the ice and breaking two fingers! Almost recovered, I decided to unleash myself upon Hull once again.
The return of 'The Sesh' at Linnet and Lark seemed as good any place...

Articles - What Is a Flash Crowd?

By Brain (Organiser of the Hull Flash Crowd)
In 1973 Larry Niven wrote as short story called Flash Crowd. In which society had access to cheap teleportation systems. Thus the consequences of almost free and instantaneous teleportation booths, was what became known as a flash crowd. The result of which being huge crowds turning up at major events, or interesting news stories.
