Hull Stingrays vs. Newcastle Vipers - 31st Jan 2004 by Matt

Two goals from Andrei Nikolaev saw the Stingrays beat Newcastle Vipers 4-3. Slava koulikov opened the scoring after just 18 seconds; Nikolaev hit a drop pass to koulikov who hit home from the blue line leaving former Hull netminder Pasi Raitanen stranded.

After seven and a half minutes gone a delayed penalty call on Martin King for roughing Nikolaev got his first of the night. Brent Pope got stingrays of to a great start in the second period scoring a slapshot from the blue-line only 4 seconds into a powerplay. Seven minutes later and the Vipers where back in the game after two goals from David Longstaff.

Stingrays managed to outshoot there opponents 16 shots to 6 in the third period but the only goal came from Jonathan Weaver while Alipov was sitting out a 2+2 penalty for accidental high sticks.

Longstaff and Campbell both had 2 minute penalty's called on them in the last minute but Hull failed to get the goal until twenty five seconds of the overtime period had gone when Andrei Nikolaev received the pass from Koulikov and hit home through a crowd of players.

The result won't have much of an impact on the league table but if Hull can carry on playing like they did tonight especially in the first period then they can hold there heads up high. Next Sunday Hull hosts the Edinburgh Capitals face off 5:30.

Hull came out all guns blazing and should have come out of the first period with at least a one goal advantage. Early in the second period, Simon Leech served a two minute penalty for high sticks.
