Hull Stingrays vs. Newcastle Vipers - 10th Jan 2004
by Matt
Hull Stingrays lost to the Newcastle Vipers despite out-shooting their opposition 36 shots to 25.

Hull came out all guns blazing and should have come out of the first period with at least a one goal advantage.
Early in the second period, Simon Leech served a two minute penalty for high sticks.

Dru Burgess almost scored his first goal for the club after flying in from Toronto last night. Burgess hit a first time shot that rattled off the angle of the crossbar and the post.
The Vipers took the lead on 35 minutes when Jonathan Weaver scored a rebound from a Beveridge shot while the Stingrays where sitting out a penalty for too many men.

Once again Vipers scored on the powerplay but this time Matt Beveridge hit past Hogberg.
After almost fifty minutes Andrei Nikoleav scored a well worked goal. Alipov made the pass to Strachan in front of the net who passed to Nikoleav who had an empty net to score in.

Newcastle called a timeout straight after the goal but it didn't seem too work with Pavel Gomenyuk hitting the bar only a minute after the restart.
With one minute left in the game, Anders Hogberg skated off and was replaced with a extra skater.

Weaver looked to have netted his second goal of the game only to have the goal disallowed and to have to spend the last minute of the game in the penalty box for tripping.
Even though The Stingrays had six skaters to Newcastle's four, Wilson still netted an empty net goal from the halfway line.

Dru Burgess, who only arrived in the country at seven thirty this morning, was upbeat even in defeat saying, We have a great team here. We play defensive but we will start to score. It will come.

Since as far back as I can remember there has been something in my life. It is impossible to explain but it has always stood by me. Like some people cannot live without drugs, I can not live without ice hockey. For me it started back in 1991. In the previous Season the Seahawks managed to win the division one championship and how I wish I had seen that!
