Hull Stingrays vs. Fife Flyers - 28th Feb 2004
by Matt
Fife Flyers won the FBNL league championship with a four goals to three win over Hull Stingrays after overtime.

The first period was end to end but neither team managed to find the back of the net despite both teams having five on three power plays.

The scoring started early in the second period with Finley opening the scoring for Fife.

Fife got the second goal with Karry Biette hitting home a Paul Spadafora pass.

Biette got his second on the thirty nine minute mark, once again Spedafora making the goal for him.
Ten seconds later Spedafora got sent to the sin bin to sit out two minutes for high sticks and Dru Burgess took advantage tipsying in a Pavel Gomenyuk shot with twenty four seconds left in the Period.
Stingrays came out in the third all guns blazing and managed to make it three- two with Slava Koulikov hitting home.

Five minutes later and the Stingrays managed to equalize through Andrei Nikolaev.
The game carried on at a high pace but neither team managed to break the dead lock and with one second left in the game Brent Pope saw himself receive a ten minute misconduct penalty for what looked like a punch on Biette.

Fife only needed one point for the championship but still went on to win in overtime when Spedafora found himself with a gaping net to hit the winner into.
The Stingrays fans must be wondering where this team that beat Dundee 6-1 during the week and a team that lost in overtime to league leaders Fife Flyers have been all Season. And maybe the Stingrays players are wondering where the Hull fans have been all season.
O.k I even did it tonight, I shouted my head off for the Stingrays but what was the difference between tonight and the third game of the season?

We have been quite all season long and then bang, we wake up, well hello this is the last game of the season.

We have the foundations for a great team and with the right attitude and training they can move on to better things.
At the beginning of the season we were happy just to have a team, well we had a team, and most players tried there hearts out.

What more could of you have asked?

With a bit of luck we could have finished higher but maybe next season.
I would like to thank the owners Mike & Sue Pack for letting me do these reports and take pictures while at the games also player coach Rick Strachan and the players for letting me have interviews after the game and entertaining me throughout the season.

Another thank you goes to Liam for taking the photos and doing a fantastic job and also to thisisUll.com for letting me put these reports on this website.

Remember hockey is a religion and not a sport.
