The Humber Mouth Previews
The Warren represents Humber Mouth Opening Event.
By Mo
USIZO community choir ladies. Directly after the Humber Mouth Launch party, I accompanied Maggie Hannan to 'The Warren Centre' to take some photos and get a taste for what the Humber Mouth Festival is all about. This is my first time, and I'm certainly not a writer, far less a critic, leave that to the experts; Maggie and Steve that is, but here's a glimpse of what I experienced at Freedom of Expression 7:30 that night.
Searching for my 'sweet spot' to take photos I noticed, how can I put it, some foreign looking faces smiling at me in the crowd, so of course I went to say hi. Two full rows of ladies and gentlemen from Zimbabwe, smiling like only they can, thrilled to be here and to take part. It was later I realized this was the USIZO community choir.
They have lived in Hull three years after escaping the terrors of Mugabe and his regime. Nevertheless, they were smiling and ready to perform for us. And did they! With a routine calmness, the choir, led by the ladies, began the rythyms and dance that belong to Africa alone. The simple beauty of these peoples self expression through dance, drums and song, reaches somewhere deep in my psyche and just gives me pleasure. It is beautiful.
'An inspiring performance from young people' is what the preview for the Warren predicted, true to form it was inspiring to see young people from the audience perform. Singers, solos, poetry. I felt it was a reflection of inclusion, the fact that the Humber Mouth is more than big name authors and writers. Ok, Zimbabwean performers 'Husi' do make it international too, but Hull's children are in there taking part.
Which of course leads me onto Husi, who's entrance to the stage made you wonder if the Warren was located in the Kalahari or something. It was spectacular to see them dressed in traditional costumes, we were all thrilled.
Powerful, energetic, dance and wonderfully controlled harmonies to the sound of feet stamping creating intricate rhythms. It was terrific. To finish off a wonderful opening event 'Husi' invited the audience to join in - dancing to celebrate the start of this years Humber Mouth Festival. A very special night.

Reviews - Readers Day: Jake Arnott, Julia Darling,
Patric Gale, James Nash By Humber Mouth Critic Steve Hall
Jake Arnott - Author of the hugely (and rightfully) successful novel The Long Firm and its two sequels He Kills Coppers and truecrime, Arnott's work to date has explored crime, crime culture and criminals in stark, dirty, realistic and above all, disturbingly human manner. His novels stand as an important counterpoint to the brown tinted, stylised mockney gangster-ism of films like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and .. Read more...

Humber Mouth Reviews - Shopping and F**king - Hull Truck Theatre - Friday 14th November By Cilla
I'm not sure when I've been more confused or out of my depth or maybe too tired or something - but I didn't enjoy this evening at all. Maybe I should have been more suspicious when I saw the St. Johns Ambulance team with their resuscitation gear sitting in the audience. After it was finished, I turned to my friend Ruth and said 'Can you explain that to me? I didn't get that at all? What was the story?' She looked back blankly and said 'I was hoping that maybe you could tell me'. Read more...

Humber Mouth Reviews - Thur 13th Nov Pooh Bear
Reading Workshop Central Library By Steve Hall
Aimed at parents and carers, the workshop I attended was one of a number being run by the Pooh Bear Reading Assistance Society in various Hull libraries throughout the Humber Mouth festival. We did a lot of exercises - we looked at how to identify various types of children's books by their covers, at how some children's books are structured with repetitions and rhymes to help young readers predict the story and learn to .. Humber Mouth Reviews - Wed 12th Nov Imetexture
Red Gallery By Steve Hall
I struggle with sound art. That's not a criticism, more an admission of a little personal blind spot. You see, what I need, I think, when I'm taking in a piece of work, is narrative - some kind of key of ideas which lets me unlock the work, lets me understand where it's going, what concerns and what issues it intends to deal with. By this I don't necessarily mean spoken words, or one of those little cards galleries stick next to their paintings - Read more...

Previews - Wild Boys and Wild Ways: Jill Dawson
By Maggie Hannan
The MMR vaccination controversy ensures that few people are unfamiliar with the plight of those affected by autism and their search for answers. Jill Dawson, who visits the Humber Mouth this Saturday, knows better than most about the challenges involved. As the mother of a son diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, she was inspired to write her latest novel Wild Boy after reading an account of a 'feral child' in Uta Frith's Autism: Explaining the Enigma. Previews - Doctor in the House? Russell T. Davies
By Maggie Hannan
'I grew up watching Doctor Who, hiding behind the sofa like so many others. He's had a good rest and now it's time to bring him back. The new series will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary...' So says Russell T. Davies, famous for the controversial Queer as Folk, and Second Coming starring Christopher Ecclestone.

Previews - Michael Gray: Bob Dylan poetry of the Blues
By Lee Cassanell
On Saturday morning I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Gray, one of the world's leading Bob Dylan Experts.
It was quite an exciting moment for me, being a Dylan fan and all, and I suppose if I'd not had the mother of all hangovers due to the previous evenings merriment, I would have been more nervous then I was. Read more...

People - The Humber Mouth By Maggie Hannan
When the first literature festival in Hull happened, organised by David Porter and John Osborne, I'd only been living in the city for about eighteen months, having arrived in a van with a dog, looking for somewhere to stay. I'd heard about the poetry readings which had been taking place in the city - the famous Bête Noire readings - and which were reported to be drawing the largest audiences for poetry outside of London.
